Slab of Becks for $29.99 at IGA (VIC)

450

A great price for a 24pk slab of fully imported Becks.

I found the IGA catalogue system confusing but I think it might be limited to Supa IGA stores. It is listed in the same catalogue that has the Cornetto deal mentioned in http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/32893

Mod: Added VIC to title

it's cheap, but is it any good ?

    • For that price it's bloody amazing!!

    • Are you kidding? Becks owns every other beer out there!

      • -2

        Goes down like razor blades.

        • You must use some bloody smooth razor blades!

Cheap but made from Irasel - and expiry date is 11/2011 - November 2011. So no-no for me!

  • normaly around 45$ so good deal

  • Are you sure it's imported?
Becks is made under licence in Adelaide at SA Brewing.

Wish we had these sort of prices in SA. Cheap beer here is $35, one of the small downfalls of the Container Deposit Levy.

    • It says on the website "Fully imported Becks"

      • +4

Fully imported from Adelaide perhaps? Most Victorians don't count Adelaide as a real city though. :)

      • as opposed to half imported?

        • Whilst most Becks is made under licence in Austraila, there are some paraellel importers who sell fully imported stock through selected channels.

      • +1

        Check the bottles carefully.

The 'discount' imported Becks comes from ISRAEL.

Tastes different to that brewed in Germany.

Think I'll stick with Aussie owned Coopers.

        • "fully imported" - that's really, really nasty marketing.

        • The ones I purchased appear to be German…

It doesn't actually say anywhere about where it's made, at least I can't see it, but most of the writing seems to be in German anyway.

How can you tell? There is no Hebrew text on the bottle anywhere, and it doesn't say anything

    • I bought a slab yesterday and it says on the box that it is from Germany

  • great price and nice beer….

  • do IGA in Sydney sell alcohol? Or is this for other states only

    • Only if they are licensed. Ours is but we're just outside of the metro area.

Sadly most bottle shop licenses in Australia have been bought up by Coles and Woolies… very few bottleshop licenses are independently owned.

  • No QLD? :-(

  • Can't find the add you're talking about. Checked Belrose IGA Plus Liqor (2070,EAST LINDFIELD NSW) but nothing in their catalog.

Can you post link of catalog or ad?

Edit - check on boozle and it only VIC. Can OP change title to state VIC only?

    • Sorry about that, I didn't realise. A Mod has fixed it up.

    (beware, 14meg file)

has 'Melbourne' throughout the catalog. clearly a Vic only special

  • just got back with a slab of becks, happy :)

    thanks for posting

Wow this is a great price on a top beer. I prefer the locally brewed version, both identical IMO however it usually reaches you fresher, so just that little bit better.

Not to mention how silly it is to post 10-12kg of beer across the world… poor environment.

    • +2

Sorry, I negged your comment BEFORE I realised you said 'IMO', so it might have been unjustified.

But, on that note, there is definatly a difference IMO, I have never compared them side by side, but I have done for Stella, which Dan Murphy's (where I work part time) sell both of. I purchased a single ADM Stella after drinking a few slabs of the imported one. And still had some of the imported one left, I did a side by side taste test. There was DEFIANTLY a very big difference. The best way I could describe it was the ADM tasted like imported Stella mixed with VB, or some other typical Australian beer, which I generally avoid if I can.

      • +1

I agree - there is a HUGE difference in taste between Stella that's imported and locally brewed. I don't think I've tried the locally brewed Becks so can't comment.

      • I just realised, for some reason spell check correct DEFINITELY to DEFIANTLY…

      • +1

        It can definitely vary.
I drink a LOT of Becks as it's my standard drinking beer and after a dodgy imported slab last year (tasted very green) I switched to drinking locally brewed for better results and while not as good as imported at it's best, it was still better than most that CUB and lion nathan bring out.

A couple of months after that I could only get imported at my local Dan's so I gave it another try and it was back to its original greatness.

Can also come down to how each individual slabs been handled which could effect the beer greatly, such as it's cooling/storage.

  • Any confirm which IGA's in/near Melbourne CBD have it? How about rip off North Melbourne IGA?

    • The south yarra (next to the same station) had two left after I left. Also, I think there are two next to the station there, one is a Supa IGA the other is an IGA xpress.

    • Just went to the Champions Supa IGA on Bourke St (between Elizabeth and Queen). They had 6 left after I left.

  • can someone report back the expiry dates? have bought stella once before and only had 1 month to drink it. Might have been sitting in a boat for months

    • I've got one in front of me

Can't find it, looked at the neck, base, label, side…not sure

EDIT: found it! 11/2010, so you're right, close to end date

      • +2

Yep, I can confirmed this! Expiry date is 11/2010 (November 2010) and the cases look trashed. Noticed all sticky tape wrapped around the case. I wouldn't buy it. Went to Rosanna (VIC - 3084).

I took IGA catalogue for this week period and went to 1st Choice Liquor at Northland to match the price. Voila, pretty and sexy checkout woman charged me $29.00 for a lovely, newly slab).

        Remember - Drink responsibility!!

        • They are taped up because by law they are required to add 'imported by:' stickers to every bottle.
You won't find imported becks that haven't been opened up like this.

  • Just a quick note: went to my local IGA Express, which is known for being crazy expensive; they have it for sale for $39.99.

So don't go to an Express. :P

  • also, while you're there, Zywiec 6 packs are really cheap, I don't think it's even a special, but for 13.99 a 6-pack, that's awesome, for a really good beer!

  • Ferntree Gully IGA $30, only a couple left. Best before 11/2010
Great Deal, thanks for posting it!

  • Wantirna IGA has quite a few left. One of the guys there said this is just a special one off.

  • +1

Becks is GOOD beer but if it's from Israel or any of those shit middle eastern countries, I wouldn't touch it with a twenty foot pole.

  • Anyone try to get Dan murpheys to match the price?
They'll have good imports so could be a much better buy?

    • price matched at Dan Murpheys Mulgrave. Thanks for the head up : )

P.S: the BB date of 12/2010 makes it a super sweet deal

  • Missed the $35 Stella's my local Ritchies IGA was doing a few weeks back. Glad another good deal came along.

  • IGA sells booze?

    really?

  • North Melbourne IGA is a no as of tonight. Sold out. I am kicking myself for not purchasing earlier in the day when there was plenty of stock.

They have said they are likely to have them in some time next week again though.

The staff also confirmed that they are imported, and that they are cheap because of their use-by date.

  • I just went to 4 IGA's in West Melbourne. They are all sold out. I did manage to get a rain check for 3 slabs though. The rain check allows you to come back with-in 1 month and get the product for the sale price once they have more stock. I'm hoping the new stock will also have a longer use by date. Usually you can get up to quantity of 6 of the same item on rain check.

  • Theres 3 IGA's in Ballarat and they seem to have heaps.
Northway sold out of their 1st pallet and got anotehr pallet yesterday.
prob only about 1/2 of it left tonight
BB of 12/2010 and the cartons are in perfect condition.

  • I work at an IGA that sold these. We sold out very fast on Saturday. Must've had 30 sell that day at least. Doesn't help when people buy them 6+ at a time. As for the Israel comment, I couldn't see anything mentioning made in israel on them. All of these said made in germany, bottled in poland, and the best before date was for the end of november, so there was still plenty of time to drink them.
