Thoughts on The Chuwi Surbook - Main Use for Note Taking at Uni

As the title says, what is your input on the new Chuwi Surbook. Is it a good buy for just basic note taking, pdf opener and web surfing device?
Also, where is a reputable online store to buy one from? What is the go with warranty, repair, etc.
Thanks in advance.

  • It's a good device for the price - I personally prefer the Jumper Ezbook 3 Pro (that can be had for $219USD on Gearbest at the moment) if you can deal with the laptop style.

Advantage of the Chuwi is the better screen - better ratio and pixel density, similar to a Microsoft Surface. Both have similar performance specs, and would be fine for web browsing and note taking.

Broke uni student.. suggests an ipad. Something not adding up.

      • Ipads are like $400-$500 and surbooks are $400-$500

        • Add onto that the costs of warranty and the iPad is much better value than the Chinese devices and fits the use OP is asking for perfectly

        • @brokeunistudent:

          Dell Inspiron 11 3000

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/328935

          $319.20

Doesnt all have to be chinese device. Reputable online store. Will do what op is asking for also.

I find it unreasonable to be paying around $500 for a intel celeron.

For $500 you at least should be getting a Pentium. Some would argue an i3 is around that price sometimes.
$300 for a Celeron and hating it :/ Be cheap in most aspects of your life, but don't get the cheapest laptop.

Pentuims were renamed into Celerons in 2015, there's virtually no difference in performance between two

Lol it depends what Pentium vs what Celeron… Not all Pentium's have a Celeron equivalent.

Proof? The link you just gave.

      • Yep, make sure that the laptop has a decent processor. i had an amd budget laptop that takes 10 seconds to open word and lags constantly on edge but does ok in chrome. While my atom based laptop seems to do much better. After upgrading to windows 10 chrome ran much more smooth.

        • That must be an AMD E processor, personally I would never touch those or atoms…
I would go for an AMD A6 at the very least, but preferably an A8 or i3.

        • @pennypincher98: haha, nice guess its a amd e1 1200

        • +1

@BrodenIt: Haha yeah AMD E1 processors are literally the worst processor you can get..
1.4 Ghz with 1mb Cache. Wow..
I complain about my N3060 which reaches 2.4-2.5ghz!

In this case an atom (1.92ghz) is actually quite an improvement, something I didn't think I would be saying about them lol!

        • @pennypincher98: Ye, My 9 year old intel core 2 duo pc still out performs the AMD e1 in nearly everything but surprising i was able to run cs 1.6 on the amd smoothly while the intel core 2 duo couldn't even get to load the game as it didn't have opencl and the integrated graphics was just completely useless in gaming. Overall, I still prefer the pc as it hasn't had any trouble after giving it regular fan cleans apart from being loud. While my toshiba barely gets 40 mins of battery and the headphone jack already died.

        • @pennypincher98: whoops, my bad. I forgot to reinstall the gpu drivers after upgrading windows. Performs like a gem now :)

        • @BrodenIt: LOL!!! Wow that helps hahaha
Glad you have found what was wrong with your machine and that it performs well now :)

Note taking - Notepad and pen are less than $10 unless you buy something fancy, and won't distract you with social media updates during class
PDF opener - Free app on smart phone
Web Surfing - Web browser on smart phone

If you want to type up assignments and such then a cheap laptop may be needed but otherwise pen and paper work better imo. I have sat in many Uni classes scribbling notes on paper while my peers tab from the lecture slides to facebook and get lost for ages before realising they've missed half the class. I love IT and work in the industry, but for classes I always take notes on paper.

One thing to note about assignments is that some classes, including non-IT ones, may require you to install specific software. So if you don't have a desktop at home you can use for this purpose, I would suggest investing in a laptop and not a tablet.

    • won't distract you with social media updates during class

Web Surfing - Web browser on smart phone

      Logic!

      • I would hope they are not web surfing during class!

        • What happens if you have a lecture that requires you to open a PDF? Or do a kahoot quiz?

And my lecturer has a "I see your phone I kick you out" rule.

        • @pennypincher98: I've never had a lecturer deny phone use before. At my current and past unis many students don't bring laptops for notetaking so would use phones to open PDFs if needed.

On the one hand a no phone rule does make sense, but on the other I see more students muck about on their laptops than their phones so it's a bit of an uphill battle for lecturers I imagine.

        • @Kail: Well you can't exactly ban laptops. But it does improve your attention so much when your phone is turned off in your bag, rather than on in your pocket or on your desk. Numerous studies have shown this.

while I can still be distracted slightly with a laptop, it is just as much as with a pen and pad, you doodle on the sides, colour in letters etc without even realising..

  • I think the dell is the best choice but you should check out 2nd hand and refurbs as they can be gotten for a much better price
