    Picnic with Tightarse.

this was released years ago how come price still the same as last year

    • +7

      No payrise still.

    • not many new releases in the tablet space, so prices aren't falling as fast on existing models.

      • Anyone know if we're expecting new Tablet/Netbook CPUs soon?

        • Not particularly, but i do know microsoft has an event on October 31st in london, show casing their new surface products.

  • I'm a student starting uni next year. Are these practical? Feel like these screens and keyboards might be too small. Are these comfortable to use for everyday?

    • +2

For mobility, yes. For quick edits and notes, yes. At home though, you'll want to connect this to an external screen and plug in a USB keyboard and mouse.

Depending on your work, you may want to get something with a better processor.

    • It works pretty well with Word, Outlook, Chrome etc. and capable of running Old School Runescape. What more do you need?

      • If comp sci student probably matlab and some compiling programs.

    • I spent 4 days studying for a professional qualification using this laptop. I passed. If your eyes are good enough it should be fine.

      • Congrats. What certification of I may ask?

    • +5

      Personally, at 11" it's really small. I'd suggest 13" or 14", but DON'T get a 15.6".

      • whats wrong with 15.6" ??

        • It's generally too big to fit in a lot of smaller bags or sleeves. Most laptops that students want the "horsepower", sleek look, and light weight portability, along with slim footprint / size moves towards ultrabooks. 15.6" is just really big, it all comes down to personal preference though. Weight and build quality don't tend to come cheap when you want a 15.6" screen, and even if it is the screen panel is most likely not going to be as great.

    • i wouldn't use this laptop for Uni. maybe middle school but not uni. get something bigger and more powerful.

      • What's Middle School?

        • In Middle Earth.

        • @Ocean:

          Sneaky Little Hobbitses!

  • 11" screen is way too small on a laptop computer to be practical. You'll be squinting your eyes and getting headaches from eye strain unless your eyes are right infront of the screen. Even my Ultrabook with its 13" screen seems small.

On a laptop, you need atleast a 14" screen to be any thing practical.

    • +4

I used an 11" screen for most of my multimedia degree. It's fine.

Best bet is to head into a HN or JB to experience different sized screens yourself.

    • +1

Disagree. Thought a 13 inch would be way to small myself but it's actually more than enough. Certainly believe even an 11 inch laptop would be adequate for uni.

You'll be squinting your eyes and getting headaches from eye strain

      Your eyes need testing.

    • +4

"You'll be squinting your eyes and getting headaches "
not if you are looking at photos of yummy delicious stuffs (food or something else)

      • I squint whenever I look at Tightarse.

        • that is not delicious (at least for me).

    • +1

You're comparing an 11" screen at 720p to a 13" screen that's at least 1080p, readability on the 11" is fine due to the relatively low resolution. The downside to this 11" is the lack of real estate on the screen, along with the fact it's a little dim/washed out compared to some screens, and the viewing angles are a little low. If you understand it's limitations it's a good little laptop.

    • My first laptop in 1997 had a 12.1" screen and I used it at school without any problems. That screen was the same exact width as the one on this laptop (but taller). Other laptops in that era had smaller 11.3" screens, and they were still usable.

  • Just note that the red colour is very bright red. Definitely not like the photos

I made a post on this laptop for an earlier deal. I'll just copy and paste it over.

Hey internet strangers! I purchased this laptop last time it was on sale and I've been using it for highschool the past couple of weeks. Below is a link to an overview I made on the laptop itself with some more technical information included too.

    http://imgur.com/a/tyEiB

A big tl;dr: A great laptop for the money. An included SSD is perfect for productivity and really defined this laptop deal.

The processor is actually really nice and isn't going to hold you back if all you're doing is some productivity. Even decent for some older and less-demanding games and 3D rendering.

Battery life varies depending on what you're doing
But the ¬9 hour of battery life in video playback is pretty accurate. When I'm rendering it can drop down to 2 hours easily or float around 5+ hours with some heavier productivity.

It is upgradeable to 8gb of ram though I heavily doubt you'll take advantage of it so it's really not worth the trouble imo.

Check the link for some more insight, but a decent screen when adjusted.

Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer :)

    • Nice! Thanks for the photos too. Nice to know it won't be too hard to upgrade.

      No touchscreen, right?

Also, what games did you try running on it?

      • No touchscreen and he played source engine games on moderate to low settings at 60fps.

        • Dammit. Should have read that imgur post more closely. Thanks. That's good enough. On the go, I probably wouldn't be gaming on that all that much.

        • I wonder if it can play some games like darkest dungeon or rimworld.

  • I picked up one of these lightly used on Gumtree for $220, fantastic for the price, easily worth the $320

  • +1

Curious.. what do people like about it? Is it mainly the price?

Operating System (Dell recommends Windows 10 Pro.)
    Windows 10 Home 64-bit English

    Anyone find this funny?

    • +1

The size, the battery life, the fact it's got upgradable memory and a real SSD, all for a bit over $300.

No, a company recommending that you pay extra for something you don't necessarily need isn't exactly unusual.

      • Purposefully giving you something they don't recommend rubs me the wrong way. They're basically saying you should pay us more to get the ideal product. They should not say they recommend Pro, but still leave it as an upgrade option.

        • +2

It's a business, they're there to make money. If they can get someone who doesn't know what they're doing to think they need to spend extra money then their marketing team has done their job. You think most people need flagship phones? GoPros? Luxury SUVs that'll never see more than a speedbump or a curb during an illegal u-turn?

        • +1

@dav3: Luxury SUV makers don't 'recommend' their cars over a non-luxury variant.

        • +3

@lostn: You're right, that Lexus ad I saw the other day really said "Don't spend $200k+ on this thing, buy a RAV4 instead"

    • Small, cheap, portable, great battery life

      • How much battery life do you get? As a rule I never believe battery life claims. I always take half of it as the true battery life. Their claims are skewed towards you turning the brightness all the way down and leaving it idle.

        • I havnt used it much as I bought it for field work but windows is reporting 6 hours with an 80% full battery

  • +1

Runs great with Linux too. I'm on Manjaro xfce at the moment. Hoping to move to openbox or i3wm soon.

Here is my setup. Feel free to ask me questions. Battery life comparable to windows using tlp :

Have you ever tried Deepin OS?

It looks beautiful & I'd love to know if it would work on this netbook.

Also, how to make a back-up Win 10 image for this? Do you have to go through the old Win 7 system image builder in 10?

Would 8GB be noticable in general use or a waste?

      Ta

      • Imo, SolusOS is a better project and looks just as good.

You can download the OS image from the Dell website so I had no reason to back that up.

8gb would only be of use if you use Chrome with a LOT of tabs and/or have various applications open at once such as a full IDE, browsers, VMs etc.

        • Yes, I'm one of THOSE "20 tabs open" people— lol. I also keep VLC playing music + Libre Office Writer open, as well.

Great about grabbing the OS image, but I was meaning setting it up fully as I like it & then imaging.

I'll check out SolusOS— so why didn't you choose it for this netbook?

          Ta!

        • @Geekomatic: Solus lacks a few packages I think. I mean, for general usage it should have been fine. But I liked the option of the Arch user repos. All the best!

        • @Geekomatic:

          20 tabs

Wish I could say the same about myself. I've got 80+ tabs open at the moment and 90+ tabs on my phone :(

Its a good laptop. I personally use it for uni and it is very good for its price. Much better value than the $2000 macs i see everyone have

  • I bought one last year when it was on sale and it is a great wee machine for the money.
Of course it has its limitations but can be connected to a TV for a bigger screen and I bought it for holidays
Its a great size for carry on plane luggage and would be great for Uni or TAFE

  • +1

I did not start my day thinking I would buy a laptop.
I have just finished buying a laptop.
I could not miss out on this deal.

    Mantra of the oz-bargainer.

  • Anyone recommend a good bag for this laptop?

  • +1

Last time, they sold out of red, so bought a white, I sent them a message through ebay requesting a red instead and got it :) Happy, and it's not a bright Ferrari red it's more of a warm dark red, IMO quite easy on the eyes.
