Going through The Servo at an Intersection to Avoid The Red Light. Yes or No?

I often see people, especially those on motorcycles, cut through the servo to avoid the red light or queue at a roundabout.

What do you guys think?

Are there rules against this?

Do YOU do this?

  • I get stuck at railway crossings in the morning, but there is a doctors surgery I can slip through the car park, it gets me to the very front of the rail crossing queue, and ahead of a set of lights. Boom gates go up and I'm through.

It's much the same as cutting through a servo, I don't like that as most people fly through and when you see a kid almost get cleaned up from that, it's a little frustrating.

  • In canberra I've seen people 'skip' a red light by jumping in the left lane where you only need to give way from the turning lane then going 20m up the street, do a U turn and then turn left at the traffic light/give way again.

    • That's what I do but when I go to holidays in south-east Asia :D

        That's what I do in South-East Melbourne :D

What do you guys do for a living? Are you heart surgeons on the way to an operation? When I was in the Army I did a defensive driver training course with the Qld Police, the instructor told us he wondered what the rush was all about with some drivers, how many of those guys in a rush run from their living room to the car to save an extra minute and how many run from the garage back in to the house when they get home? Just wait like the rest of us, what's the big deal.

    • you do have a good point, the attitude of rushing all the time is dangerous. I am not always in a rush, never speed, never tailgate, even if I'm late. But i do weave lanes and find detours to get ahead when this happens:

      • being stuck behind 10 different drivers who leave gaps of 2 car lengths
      • Drivers who are are slow to react to green lights
      • Drivers who are so slow to merge after indicating (expecting everyone else to accommodate them)
      • drive 10 under the speed limit (I know there was another post about this)

I'd like to rephrase your questions for those guys: What do you guys do for a living? Are you all retired? Do you love waiting at red lights? Is the car really comfy and your destination really unbearable? Fair enough you like to take it easy, do you have to enforce that on everyone else?

Furthermore, there are some traffic lights that you know are Red for too long and/or not Green for long enough. I raise concerns with Vicroads but doesn't help. That's when I detour side streets, servos, fast food carparks.

I don't do it and don't really care if others do it. I really doubt that those who say they do it because they value their time are saving much if any time when I often just see them at the next set of lights anyway.

I used to do it until a friend of my told me that it's illegal and I could be fined by the cops. That was over a decade ago and I didn't bother to find out if it is really illegal. Never done it again since.

I equate people who do this and people who drive in service lanes to get ahead of traffic as the same as children who cut in line at the tuck shop in primary school. Grow up.

Wow what are you going to do with all the time you saved??

I almost got run over once by someone doing this. The car sped into the servo and I was walking towards my car. I don't mind people doing this but slow the **** down.

This is a prime example of why this shouldn't be allowed - safety. Most people cutting through are either inpatient or in a hurry as it is. Never a good mix where's there's pedestrians involved.

      • They were a bunch of hoons doing 40-50 kms on private property. The car rocketed past me.

We need tougher laws and more enforcing power for the police. Also hiring more police officers that can physically take on the rogue elements would be good.

  • I never have because I never have been in such a rush I need to.
People should chillax a bit the time saving is neglible in the real world

  • Someone has actually died at my local station because of a driver cutting through too fast so I will never do this…

  • Fairly certain its illegal
