Long lasting Leather shoes

Hi I am interested in a pair of leather shoes to go to work that will last more than 2 years.

Please recommend the brand and the place I could buy them.

I am after shoes that have strong soles. I bought one recently from Myers, Julius Marlow, only lasted half a year before the back sole got warned out.

Thank you for your time.

RM Williams - but they are expensive. Mine have been going strong for 4 years and I'm sort of rough on them.

    • I second this. Next stop is finding a good shoe repairer who won't rip you off and do a good job

    • This.
There are often deals from RMs themselves. Like at the moment they have a promotion where they'll give you a free belt with a pair of shoes.

  • Crockett and jones
    Brutally expensive to buy
    But
    Cheapest in the long run

I have some 9 years old that look amazing

    Dr.Martens Shoes :)

    • Agree!! They last forever

    • Only If you buy the UK manufactured ones. From other countries they are piles of shit.

  • Put rubber soles on a new pair before using it. I usually get an extra year out of the shoes by doing that.

A good pair will last a very long time, but the sole is consumable. You can get rubber soles over the leather (or leather 'add ons') so the integral soles remain in good condition.
Visit the shoe repair place to get replacements.
But you need to polish them to keep the leather in good repair or it will crack and split.

If you are prepared to polish weekly/fortnightly and replace the soles yearly or so, then a quality pair of shoes could last decades.
I tend to buy cheaper shoes as my feet fit a standard size well so they are inexpensive to replace, but if you are purchasing expensive shoes, caring for them will make them last.

    • Right on! It's the same with a lot of things, like cars for example. Buy something nice, look after it, and it should last a long time.

A couple of things that no one has mentioned yet it is not to wear the same shoe two days in a row and to use shoe trees. Shoes should have time to dry, so give them a day's rest and put a cedar shoe tree inside to soak up moisture and to keep the shoe's shape.

The OP also failed to provide a price range, so it's kinda difficult to make recommendations. You can buy Loake 1880's or Crockett and Jones (bench grade or hand grade) but you'd still need to care for them somehow (e.g. polishing, shoe trees, Topy soles). If you're not going to put some effort into care, then don't expect such things to last very long.

I buy Hush Puppies only when on sale - pretty good n comfortable - last like 2yrs for me - wear 4 days a week.

  • Had a bad experience with Hush Puppies, wore mine to work 4 days a week and they didn't even last a year before the soles kept tearing inside. Invested in some RM Williams which will hopefully last, did cost a lot more but they are definitely quality.

I wear Ecco which have been excellent. They actually come with a two year warranty. Like you, I was sick of shoes falling apart, went to Ecco and haven't looked back.

  • Not as nice or as long lasting as Ecco, but Rockport and Rossi have been good for me.

Thank you all for the input. I will now try to bargain hunt these shoes.
