Has Anyone Used Turo.com - "The Airbnb for Cars"?

I'm going to Hawaii in November and looking to hire a car for a few days. Found Turo.com via Google, and the reviews look pretty positive but I'd be interested to hear experiences from my fellow Ozzies.

For those unaware, it's a car share scheme in the US, EU and UK, essentially the same as carnextdoor here in Aus, except that it caters more to travellers. e.g. Airport pick up, drop off, etc.

I've searched all over the net for any signup coupon/promo codes, but the only such codes are all referral links which give you both $25 off (interestingly, people have even taken out google ads for "$25 off" that are just their own referral code).

  • Sounds like car next door

  • Used it in LA for 2 days, was way more convenient having the guy pick us up/drop off outside the terminal. Not sure what works out better over longer periods, ended up using a regular car rental over a 4 week period because turo had restrictions on milage used which we were sure to exceed.

    • Good to know, thanks! I'm only going for a week, so mileage shouldn't be an issue.

  • +1

Was going to use it to book a Tesla in LAX drop off LBC, but after ringing my insurance company they specifically mentioned that Turo is not considered a valid "Car Rental" agency, so insurance wouldn't cover it … ended up getting Avis … it was ok, they upgraded me to a Beetle coupe.

    • I had thought that might be an issue. Mind letting me know which insurance company/policy this was?

      • honestly cant remember company, just chose a provider and ring to ask. If you are getting a Tesla or high end car, then keep investigating or go with a reputable company.

But if the only reason you want Turo is to get a cheap car, I honestly dont think it's worth the insurance hassle/potential night mare to save a few dollars/few hundred … regardless of how well marketing sell the provided insurance cover.

At the end of the day, if there is an accident. Someone will pay (i.e. you). That's why there's insurance.

  • Merged from Turo Car Rentals and Insurance

    Hi,

I am planning to rent a car with Turo for my trip to Los Angeles.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience using Turo and could explain to me how the insurance works?

Does the Premium insurance which Turo provides include both Collision Damage Waiver and Supplementary Liability Insurance?

Also, are there any travel insurance which will pay out the excess for an accident with a Turo rental, given that it is not technically a licensed car rental company?

    • I used Turo in LA in April.

you get a taxi to the depot and they reimburse you for the fare. they hoook you up with an uber to get you back to LAX when you return the car.

I grabbed a 2016 elantra for 10 days AU$450 (including insurance) . worked out well.

regarding levels of insurance - can't actually remember.
