Athens, Rome or Prague

My wife and I are heading to Europe for three weeks and will be spending a week in Paris.
We have another two weeks and are trying to decide between spending time in either Athens
Rome and Prague. Looking for advice from people who have been there as to what you would
recommend.
Taking into account what there is to see and do, cost of living, price of hotels and best
value for our dollars.

      Rome and Athens.

      Reason…the women.

      when in Rome…

  • Prague is nice, but can't imagine spend more than 2 days there [ as you are married ]
Rome is a great place for Sightseeing, Eating, shopping. It has it all. Pollution included.
If you go I can recommend a nice serviced apartment place pretty much 300m from the Colosseo. And Use the Official Taxis ( fixed price to city ) when arriving at airport.
Athens I can't tell, as I have not been there, but my guess it's at the same level as Rome for Sightseeing and food. Probably not as exclusive as Rome for Shopping.

  • If you need to choose one, I would go for Prague.

But if you have a room to change your mind, I would stay a week at "Florence" and another week at "Prague"

  • I went to all three during a recent Europe trip with my partner.

We absolutely loved Prague. The building architecture is beautiful and we just enjoyed strolling around exploring the city.

Are you planning on spending the entire time there? We stayed 4 days and thought it was a good amount of time, however we are the type that like to explore heaps with each day rather than take our time.
Everywhere we went, the locals were nice and the other bonus is the AUD goes a long way there.

Athens and Rome were similar, however we did feel less about Rome after exploring around and experiencing a few of the seedy local guys cat calling at my partner. She wasn't even wearing anything too provocative, just normal summerwear. People there seemed quite rude too.

    Rome..Rome and Rome!

  • Prague for 3 days. then Rome via Venice

  • What time of year? Prague in summer most bang for buck
Rome and Athens are very hot in peak season
Can't go wrong with any really depends what you like

  • Looking to go in August

    • August is a different month to usual for Italy.
*hot weather (think Melb/Syd 33+ degree days)
*lots of tourists towards the start of the month, due to summer hols & travellers from other countries. They taper off as the month progresses. (Eg. St Peter's/Vatican line might be 2hrs+ in peak time just to get in, but will get better as people finish their holidays.)
*Half of Italy goes on hols in August. Most stores/facilities will still be open, but a lot of small businesses will close for parts of the month.
They're not all "bad" points, but just so you're aware of what you'll be expecting. :-)
We just went at end of Aug/start of Sept - caught the weather, tourists were dwindling but still a few.

Greece is similar, but less so than Italy. Weather is just as hot (if not worse).

Again, never been to Prague so can't comment on that.

  • Been to all three, Prague was by far the most beautiful. Athens is 2nd, nice city with plenty to see. Then Rome.

  • rome can be seen in a day
prague can be seen in 2 days
    athens is falling apart

"Rome can be seen in a day"??
Are you for real, and have you actually been there??
I spent a week there with my family and we walked 10-15km every single day exploring something different.

    • Rome CANNOT be seen in a day. SMH

  • Loved both Prague and Rome. Prague is much more affordable and has beautiful architecture. I loved Rome as well just not quite as much as Prague. Would recommend spending about 3-4 days and then maybe going to another affordable city in Eastern Europe like Budapest, Hungary or Brasov, Romania.

You could go to all three if you have two weeks.

I've been to all of them and given a short amount of time I'd choose Rome with a side trip to Florence and/or Cinque Terre.

Keep your wits about you in Rome, there is a thief on every corner, even children.

  • Been all of the cities you mentioned Prague is our favorite but spending two weeks there would be too much. Athens can be seen in less than a week so if you pick this city might as well go on an island for the rest of your stay. A week in Rome is enough as well then spend the other week somewhere else. I would definitely recommend Florence.

  • Not been to Prague.

Of the other 2 - hands-down Rome. Stay in the CBD or near Colosseum & you'll spend days seeing it all, all within walking distance. We've spent 2 weeks over 2 trips, and still discover new places each time (both historical locations & "normal" things in cities).
Dunno about the complaint about thieves etc. are, but there are a lot of "street sellers" trying to charge you for flowers, selfie sticks etc. Just tell 'em to nick off. Never had anything bad happen, but like anywhere just be aware & watch your surroundings. You should be fine.
One thing to note - look to do a night tour of the Forum district. They have projection/light shows that look great. (Haven't been able to find the ticket office though. We just watched from the main street thoroughfare). The whole district looks amazing when lit up at night

Athens - we spent 2 days there and felt like we'd seen everything. View of the Pantheon on the hill is amazing. But the city itself is in a state of decay - Roman shops might be closed for lease or renovations, but Athens ones look like they've been abandoned & falling apart. Clearly hit hard post-GFC & with their economy collapsing.

    I'd suggest:
    *1wk - Rome
*1wk - Prague (based on others' opinions)
If you wanna shorten it or add in other things (eg. 4 days in ROme, Prague & say Florence), keep in mind that Italian bullet trains are great for seeing the country, & aren't too expensive either. We had 1.2hr train ride to Naples (for Capri stay) vs 4hr drive, & only cost (I think) $50 or so each, per trip. Milan, Florence, Venice are all great options for a few days stay.

I would go to Rome, but spend your two weeks travelling down Italy like this Cinque Terre & Florence (one week), Rome & Amalfi Coast (one week).

Athens is a very ugly city. However, 2 weeks cruising the Greek Isles with the missus would be pretty amazing.

  • Rome.

  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions
