All true but in their defence, it's important to also understand that it's more expensive for these smaller banks to buy money for loans on the open market and they also usually do little to no capital raising via securitisation. They rely mainly on depositors to fund their loan book.
Many of them are also mutual organisation and not listed companies so can't raise capital via share issuing.
This means that fees and charges is actually an important source of revenue for them to keep the lights on whereas it's nothing more than 'drinking money' (literally in many cases!) for the Aussie big 4 and the large multinationals operating in Australia like ING, HSBC and citi
I would agree with the source of money point, but given this is targetted at depositors, that doesnt excuse screwing them so the bank can provide cheaper loans to borrowers.
If you take that defence then every sneaky way to obtain money can be justified.
Large banks have shareholders and Senior executives to support therefore …. 💰 😀

What I think is far better is the Coles Rewards MasterCard which effectively gives 1% back in flybuys points and despite the $99 annual fee you also gain $0 international transaction fees and gain access to the purchase protection insurance which you can get for free by paying the balance off each month prior to the statement generation date.
That insurance allows you to claim back the difference if the item you bought goes down in price within 2 years. Use a site like price hipster to track prices automatically.
