Open a Choice Account & Spend $50 in 15 Days In-Person Using Mastercard Debit Card via Mobile Wallet, Get $50 Cashback @ Westpac

1360

I see this deal on their website. Kind of not bad for a transaction account.

Add your Debit Mastercard to your mobile wallet. Then, within 15 days of opening your account, spend a total of $50 or more. Payments must be in-person and contactless.

You cannot claim this Cashback if you had any Choice account in past 24 months.

You need to add your debit card to mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet) and use that to pay contactless and in-person.

Everything else is pretty much standard.

This deal also is being offered from other banks within Westpac Group:

This deal also is being offered from other banks within Westpac Group: StGeorge BankSA BankOfMelbourne.

    You mean $200 cashback ?

    • +2

After reading westpac and StGeorge T&Cs I guess you can get Cashback from each bank, as they didn’t say one Cashback only from the group, but just from “the bank”. I’m not sure about BankSA and BOM.

      • +4

I doubt that, BankSA/BOM/StGeorge are technically the same. You can use the same login credentials to login to either of them, i.e you open BOM account but you can login from BankSA/StGeorge website with the same login.

You won't be able to open account again with the other 2 if you setup account with either.

        • Did not know this, huge, thanks for sharing.

Which bank has the best app/online banking platform?
St George's rates and offerings are good, but their tech is dismal. EG, one example being scheduled transfers. You can't set a repeating scheduled transfer without an end date, and the end date has to be within 2 years. PITA, especially when you have shared accounts, yet the scheduled transfers are only visible to the person that originally sets it up.

          • +1

@JakeyJooJoo: The westpac group is working on uplift or unifying their regional brands (StGeorge, BankSA, BOM) into their Westpac IT platform. I personally find Westpac online banking and mobile app is in top tier if not the best one. You could learn news about this by Google "Unite Program". https://www.google.com/search?q=unite+program&tbm=nws

            • @kcome:

I personally find Westpac online banking and mobile app is in top tier if not the best one.

The best one out of the group you mean? Because compared to Macquarie, the Westpac app and internet banking are absolutely terrible.

              • @bonezAU: Macquarie is good, I’ve used them couple of years ago. Just personal opinion they are not “way better” than the red bank. All my opinions are not counting outage aspect, which is pretty much same shitty in all banks.

    • +6

In the other threads there are people confirming that yes, they have received cashback from each.

    • -3

does this reset? can i spend 50 bucks every day and just get 50 bucks cash back? meaning every thing I spend is now free :D

    • Where did you see $200?

  • Does this still work if one did the business one?

    • +1

I guess you can claim since T&C doesn’t say owning a business account and get Cashback disqualifies you from this one.

    • No - Westpac Choice is only residential product. I think the business account called Westpac Business One.

  • Is there a monthly fee like with CBA?
    Thanks

    • +5

$5 a month but waived for 1st year

    • +3

      Account-Keeping Fee (monthly)
      $5
      This fee is waived for:

Customers that deposit at least $2,000 each month
Customers under the age of 30 or full-time tertiary students
      Westpac Choice Concession account holders
New to Australia or expatriate customers (for the first 12 months)
Customers that link their Choice account to their Rocket Repay Home Loan or Rocket Investment Loan as an offset account (for as long as the account is linked)
Customers that open a new Westpac Choice account online (for the first 12 months).

      • we can just requested the account to be close before 12 months end?

        • Of course yes.

    • +4

Open a new Westpac Choice account online between 1 February 2024 and 30 September 2025 to have the monthly Account Keeping fee waived for the first 12 months. At the end of the 12-month period, the monthly Account Keeping fee (currently $5) will apply unless the minimum monthly deposit criteria are met. Individual(s) under the age of 30, New Arrivals, and students are ineligible for this Offer. This offer is not applicable to the Westpac Choice Concession account. For joint accounts, individuals must meet the eligibility criteria for the fee waiver to apply. Other fees and charges, terms and conditions apply to the Westpac Choice account. This offer may be repeated from time to time, withdrawn, varied, or extended at any time.

      • +5

Should not have stopped reading at the bold text because on the next line it says:

No Account-keeping fees for at least 12 months. Then, for deposits of $2,000 a month or eligible customers (details in fees section)

Then lower it says $5 monthly Account-Keeping Fee (unless exceptions).

          • +5

@topherboi: If you read all of it then why did you answer a question about the fees saying there are no fees?

        • What's stopping you from just claiming the $50 cashback and then closing the account immediately afterwards? You're not going to get no-fee accounts from the big banks without some sort of catch, like the $2000 a month deposit requirement.

          • +4

@safrane: NAB offers free transaction accounts without any deposit requirements.

  • Damn, just opened one of these accounts two weeks ago.

    • +2

me too, just opened one last wednesday :(

edit: just called the bank up, they informed me i likely wont get this offer as this is more for new customers who has not held a transaction account with westpac. This is my second choice account. hope this helps someone

  • +5

Thanks OP. Free $50, why not. Existing customer with Business one. Took me 5 mins to open and bank in.

    • Would you close it after getting 50? There's a account fee seems like lol

      • +1

        Free for first year.

        • +1

Yes, many will forget after one year.

    • I already have a Business One account for my sole trader business and thought I can’t have the cash back. Is your Business One account for your Pty Ltd or sole trader business?

  • Signed up, added to wallet already, I can go fill up $50 in fuel and how long do I need to wait for the cashback?

    • +4

If it's similar to this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/903968, I got my cashback 2 weeks after meeting the criteria, but looks like it could take up to a month.

    • Can you add to wallet without the physical card?

      • +3

        Yes

        • Is using digital card ok or do we need to use physical card in mobile app to get cash back?

          • @yoquierotaco: Have the same question, I assume we can spend the $50 using the digital card and don't need to wait for the physical one to arrive?

            • @Moo Deng: Yes, the real catch is "in-person and contactless" that means online purchase not eligible.

        • I just signed up and have to wait for the physical card to arrive in the mail, I’m unable to add the digital card to my wallet because I don’t know the number of the physical card yet, am I missing something?

          • +2

@Jujji: install the app. there is an option to activate your digital card.

  • +1

Finally, I am eligible for the ShopBack bonus cashback. BTW, how can I use the Westpac card to get the bonus cashback?

  • How easy to close this account once we get the cashback?

    • -1

Go to the branch and spend 30 mins answering questions

      • Worth it for a 50? 😂

      • I had this account before back in 2020 and I remember I have to call them to close it.

        • +1

Once you have supplied ID (easier in a branch) and the account is in good standing with a $0 balance, it's just a few clicks on their system to close it.

          • @safrane: Cannot even setup a security code, have to call the bank, I'll pass

            • @sqheaven: I set up my security code OK without phone call.

              • @eddieboy2: They told me to come to the branch with 100 point ID and then go back home and call again to setup security 😂 insane

        • +1

rules different now all bank should not make it difficult for customers to close. most app will have this option - by law.

  • still waiting for the $100 for 15 transactions.

    • +1

      how long ago was that?

  • +2

This could pair well with their rewards credit cards that offer a reduced annual fee for existing customers.

  • +1

Can't get the identity verification to go through for both license and passport. Effort so far has not been worth it. No chance I'm going to bother going to a branch.

    • I had no problems using DL and MC card.

  • Just applied st george yesterday. Will do this later.

  • So if I have an everyday account already open with westpac can i still apply for the other linked banks and get the offer?

  • i got this message:

Sorry, we're unable to complete your request

It looks like some of your details are already in our system under an existing account. If you'd like some help resolving this, you can visit a branch. ??

    • +1

It means you have already have Westpac account before, just recover your username/pw and login to open new account.

If you have closed your previous account more than 2 years ago then you are eligible for this promotion

      • I had a credit card with them years ago (like, at least ten). I'm getting the same thing. No way of recovering details without a card number. I'm assuming if I rang them they might be able to do something but certainly not going to a branch (particularly on a ten degree rainy day in Melbourne)

      • Yep, I had the same message. Went back to an old card from 5 years ago and found the user ID. Reset and I was in!

  • wow i had westpac cc 6 years ago and they keep all my details, literally just clicking through 4-5 times and the a/c is open
now set reminder to 25/06/2026 to cancel

  • As a current westpac customer. That was the easiest and quickest account ever to open !

  • Can I make payment with a physical card?

    • +1

Of course yes but not eligible for the $50 spend.

      • In that case, I am unable to add this new card in google wallet 😂

        • Why? You don't have a smartphone ?

          • @timhn: They blocked the sms security for some reason, they want me to visit the branch to enable sms code before I could activate the digital card and add to my wallet

            • @sqheaven: Is it when you click add to google pay, you get an error? im getting the same any fix?

              • @sm-1105: You need to goto bank and ask them to enable security sms lol

                • @sqheaven: do you why its like that? do u get the error in google pay itself where it says '"couldnt finish card setup for pay contactless"?

                  • @sm-1105: Most likely due to security on your phone is not enabled. Are you using your own phone to install your own card?

  • Face recognition didn't work out. YMMV
The app asked for a branch visit to open a transaction account (lol). No thanks.

  • sorry stupid question please.
so i have the westpac a/c open. go to card, activate digital card, and then go to google wallet and add manually card detail of the physical or digital? i think digital :D

    • +1

You open the Westpac app and add to wallet from there - Choice account, view card, scroll down to Add to Google Pay.

  • anyone received the $50 bonus yet?

  • Anyone having issues adding to Google pay? Try to add it and get error saying bank doesn't support it….

    • I also cannot add the card, I tried adding from the Westpac app or using the card numbers but it always says "contact the card issuer".
I even tried on two other Android phone and one iphone and it always fails.

    • I tried again today and I could successfully add the card to Google Wallet. I did it from the Westpac app.

One thing I did yesterday is make two transactions with the physical card. One with tap and the other with chip and pin. Maybe it unblocked something.

      • +1

Mine works now too! I did nothing unlike you so that's interesting.

  • -3

How long to wait until they deposit the $50?

    • +1

Did you read the Terms and Conditions?
"The $50 payment will be made to your Westpac Choice account within 60 days of you meeting all Terms and Conditions and eligibility criteria."

  • To enable my account, they want me to call and register for SMS Code. The phone line has a 71 minute wait time and already disconnected me once while waiting. Just a warning that it might be a hassle.

  • Signed up and opened, the verification was a pain…It kept saying no glare but both drivers license and passport are plastic.

  • Does anyone have issue with ID verification? Keep facing technical difficulties when taking photo of passport

  • Anyone got their 50 yet? 😁

    • +1

Not yet. Took a while for them to give the business one account reward. Probably have to wait a few more weeks

  • Unrelated to this deal.. but it got me thinking if holding a St George cc impacts the points offer if i sign up to a Westpac cc? St George is Amplify, Westpac is Altitude, I couldn't find anything in their T&C to say so, wondering if anyone cycles between the two or will I have to wait 24 months after closing the St George card before i'm eligible for the Westpac bonus?

    • No, they are separate products. I churned both in 2024. The T&Cs will clearly spell out which cards will make you ineligible for the offer.
