Gonna be packed like fountain gate krispy kreme circa '11

Let’s face it…. this place has nothing on KK.

      But 6 for $10 sure I’ll be there :)

      • +2

        oooooo big call mate

        • +2

How can you compare the soft fluffy texture of a KK donut with a dense and heavy donut from daniels?

        • Does that mean kk sell more air in their donuts and Daniels are dense and heavy so you get more doughnut ?

      • $1.60 a donut? You guys must love your sprinkles

      • +4

No way KK is better than Daniel's. The NZ One Daniels has is my favorite

      • Uhhhhh… maybe you haven't been there. This place completely puts Krispy Kreme to shame.

        • +3

They're more "artistic" with their doughnuts but the texture and taste of KK, IMO, are just slices of heaven.

        • +1

@bardwrangler: Gotta agree that KK regular glazed is hard to beat.

The ones are Daniel's are good, but they're a different breed of doughnut, too much cream filling for the most part on some flavours.

        • Their doughnuts taste like bread. Fillings are nice though. But disappointing overall. Much rather KK. KK Nutella Dougnuts are back that the moment at 711.

        • +2

@El Grande: I totally agree with you. Their donuts are nowhere near KK, taste like bread and more expensive than KK. Just got no idea why so many ppl queue up.

        • +1

          @samehada:

Nothing beats the feeling of a KK original glaze melting on your tongue.

Love the filled ones as well, real nice texture.

        • +1

@crazycs: I seriously don't understand what is the hype for this Daniel donut. It is total not worth what they are asking for their donut.

        • +1

@samehada: I posted below that i believe it's been easternised. Anything average is fantastic once it's in the East.

      • +1

And KK has nothing on Mister Donut from Japan. I'm glad I live in Australia. :)

    • I remember going every night on opening week and it just turned into people buying 2 dozen and throwing them into oncoming cars lining up in the drive thru.

    • Why 2011?

Didn't Krispy Kreme open in fountain gate around 2003 or 2004 from memory? I remember the drive through line started at the other end of the shops.

      • i remember working at melbourne airport back in 2004-6 and wondering why so many flight attendants were carry back boxes of doughnuts. apparently they were from Sydney kk. and the hype over they were was opening in fountain gate. I guess that when all the lines for doughnuts started.

        • +3

          That's funny.
I actually drove to NSW for the day to get a couple of boxes before Melb opened the first store.

Back when petrol was 60c per L..

        • @Herbse: was it worth it? feels like an eps. of Harold and kumar to go krisp kremes

        • @godofpizza: best day of my life. Hahah

KKs came to Melb about 2 years after that. I was in the opening day drive through line for 2 hours.

It's funny how dead the place is since. The doughnuts still taste good. People just love something new so they can tag themselves or whatever kids do now. Hence the Daniel's revolution.

        • @Herbse:

how are daniel doughnuts compared to KK or Mr donuts?

        • @Herbse: thanks

        • +1

          @Herbse:

They opened in Melbourne circa 2007.

I still remember flying up to Sydney on $19 return Jetstar fares to buy donuts.

Such a bummer - we heard about this promo but were having friends over for dinner on Saturday so we paid the $18 for a half-dozen. Still worth it though!

Also, last time they did this promotion we waited in line for 30 mins. And that wasn't during school holidays. They're a 24-hour place so it might be worth going early in the morning if you're interested.

  • +1

    What are dounts?

    • A Yorkshire variety.

  • +1

So $5 off their regular pricing before they put the price up?

They've been really slack of late. I understand it's 24 hours but they run out of stock pretty earlier in the evening sometimes and decide to shut up shop.

    • Huh? They've been $15/dozen as long as they've been open. Yes, they've been becoming more and more popular lately, and have been selling out. That's part of a business succeeding - they're now struggling to keep up with demand.

      • +1

The 6 packs used to be $15 (buy 5 get 1 free) but a couple of months ago they got rid of that and just made each donut a flat $3 each regardless of the amount bought, essentially making the 6 pack $18.

  • Would buy some KK donuts instead, very small range at daniels. They dont even sell chocolate donuts.

    • I'm pretty sure DD does choco variety.
My advise is go there early in the morning to avoid the queue.

      • What type of choco variety ?. Only ones i have seen which are close are nutella donuts.

  • +3

Good to know but the parking/wait will be likely be painful at all hours. The retailers close by must love the congestion lol

    • +2

That car park was terrible before Daniel’s Donuts moved in., especially the entry and exit. But yeah, I’m amazed how popular they are.

      • +2

Open 24 hours turn it into a popular car meet up spot.

        • It is open 24 hours.

        • @guidedlight:

I meant being open 24 hours has made it a popular car meet up location

  • How much is shipping?

  • OMG I will actually gonna say hi personally to some ozbargainers tomorrow!

    • +1

This isn't exclusive. It's from Facebook which is where most of the people will be from.

  • having this place within walking distance has not been good for the waist.

  • Oh Gawd gonna be facing the long ..er queue tomorrow.

  • +3

What the crap. Wasn't it $12 for 6?

Also. I had Daniel's early on, they had cool "new" flavor combinations, but ever time I've been recently. The dough has that stale, dry, flakey taste.
Plus they are stingey on toppings. They either have cool looking doughnuts with lots of stuff on the top but is empty and tasteless on the inside, or has filling but nothing on top.
Their only saving Grace is the cream and jam eclair. Which has been sold out the last 3 times I went.

I stick with Krispy Kremes from now on. They might not have as wide as range, but their dough is infinitely better and the original straight off the line is a kin to crack cocaine to me.

Olympic Donuts in footscray, I always go back

    • +1

didn't they closed down. owner had retired?

      • Yes he retired but new people make tghem the same but without the dolphin jam dispenser :)

        • +1

or the wooden cupboard with uncooked dough resting he had at the back of the van..

I thought they were insanely overrated the first time I tried them, after multiple repeat visits I am still of the opinion they are overrated. I've tried almost every doughnut they have and none of them were amazing, thick and dense bread, sometimes stale tasting. Toppings never tasted great, my memory of the donuts is either they were nutella filled or they weren't, and the ones that weren't simply tasted like bread with toppings. Service is terrible, people just cramming in and people taking orders from whoever they happen to spot close-by.

The only positive is that the Vegan doughnuts tasted good for vegan options.

Krispy Kreme is better tenfold for me.

    • so are they better than mr donuts or your not getting them fresh?

      • Better than Mr Donut. Rubbish in front of KK.

    • What is with all these fancy doughnut joints (donut time, doughboys, etc.) producing doughnuts that taste like bread?

    • +1

I tried it once, about 6 different varieties.

Massively overrated. I can't believe people would queue for these.

I rarely throw out perfectly edible food. I usually wait until they go stale before I throw them out. We sampled some in the carpark and tossed them in the bin.

    • Daniel's has been around in Melbourne for years now. Their original shop in Hoppers Crossing has had a steady flow of customers since it opened. But when they opened in Springvale it basically got 'Easternised'. Became a huge fad with lines out the door.

When anything hits the eastern suburbs it gets blown out of proportion……

    • Always dry….I would imagine dry as an 80 year old's donut

Life is to be enjoyed, my friend! If people enjoy a treat that's unhealthy, who am I to judge? Eat and be merry

      • -1

They don't know what they are eating. First step is information. Life is enjoyed with good health, not medical complications.

        • +2

They are no healthier than the next Whopper deal or any other takeaway item that's posted here.

Yes the first step is information which everyone has at their disposal - not condemnation.

  • I will update later whether there will be a queue at 1145pm tonight lol.

  • +1

I live around the corner from this place. These donuts don't come close to Krispy Kreme Original Glazed.

The line is full of hypebeasts. Same people that wait in line for the new iPhone.

    • Same here, I tried once and never again. Waste of time waiting for inferior overhyped donut.

  • I also think they're seriously overrated. We tried a dozen different ones and I reckon i thought one or two were ok at best. The family all agreed we wouldn't have them again. I'm a Donut King fan.

  • +1

Have had these donuts a lot. They are delicious! Definitely rate them over KK based on taste, others are commenting on texture but I like them for the cream fillings that taste far better than KK.

  • +1

Damn would love to try these but Springvale is too far. Don't get the KK love, my work is right next to one and people buy them as work treats all the time but I don't even bother to eat a FREE one now.

    • +1

If you're around the West, the main/original branch is in Hoppers.

  • Went there 15min ago. A very very long queue. Don't want to wait for hour just to save a few bucks.

  • will they have donuts if I go at like 11pm?

  • Drove past at 3pm after work and the line was massive, went for a late night maccas run at 11pm and the line was even longer and stretched around the block! They must be selling thousands of donuts.
