DIY Garage Flooring Options

Hello everyone,

I would like to use my Garage for more than just parking and using it as a store room. Its a double garage and just one car.

I'd like to setup one side of the garage for a workout area (like putting a rowing machine/work bench) and other times using it for photography. So, I want the floor to look good and easy to mop/dust.

Heard about epoxy coatings but a little worried about it being slippery when wet. Please let me know other options that I need to consider.

Looking for DIY options and will take some help from a handyman.

  • i am very interested to hear the results if you do expoxy floor, bunnings has kits for $186 https://www.bunnings.com.au/dy-mark-8l-epoxy-clear-garage-fl…

    • Have a guy coming to give me a quote. I am curious to see how much he will quote me. I prefer the DIY option, but don't want to rush in and end up with a average result.

    • +1

I have painted my garage floor with this kit from Bunnings and also added anti-slip additive. Really good results, holds up well after 3 years.

      • We also did this kit over 2 years ago and are very happy with the results and how well it's held up.

We did a blue colour kit, and a second kit of clear which really helped with a good final feel.

  • Heard about epoxy coatings

Epoxy is great! I have the product over my Garage floor and it’s not that slippery when wet too.

Now would be a perfect time to do that due to the Weather warming up and it does take a couple of days to fully dry.

Would recommend having two people on the Job though (In my opinion) it isn’t a easy Job if you want the final outcome to be top-notch.

    • That's good to hear. A guy is coming to give a quote for epoxy today. Over the phone, it was him who suggested epoxy but the rough quote was running over 1k.

  • I believe there is an additive, akin to sand which can either be mixed through the epoxy or sprinkled over the painted surface before it sets.

There also is products such as this, however I do not know how effective they are

  • Was at a mate's this weekend who DIY'd an epoxy covering, and it lift every time he parks his car on it for any length.

He's not one to half-arse these things either, so be wary!

    • Wow!! That's what I'm really afraid of,not doing it the correct way.
Also the concrete quoted me 2000-2500 just for the garage. He showed me a sample, which he said was two coats of epoxy along with some sand mix to give it texture. I think this is a bit expensive than I thought.
Further my handy man said for a few hundred dollars he could do clear coat (I don't know what that is).

  • I have carpet tiles in my garage. Bought a stack of seconds off gumtree for $2 each. They are 50cm x 50cm size.

    • I like this idea as well. So I assume, if there is a damage to a particular area, you just replace them?
what if there was an oil leakage on to these tiles? Would they help slow the leakage transfer on to the concrete? This is my major concern because I heard once oil leaks on to the concrete it just stays there and cannot be removed.

      • Yes. If you dirty one tile. Just lift it up and replace with a spare. My carpet tiles came with a plastic underlay backing. I assume all tiles would have them. The plastic backing is designed to lock out condensation from the ground but I assume they work the other way too. I am not sure how durable they are to be parked on though. I was suggesting carpet tiles for the work area half of your garage.

        • Wonderful and thanks for your reply. I will look into this for my work area.

  • OK, so the concrete guy has quoted 2200$ for just the garage. For the driveway and a little section bordering near the entrance its 3100$.

I might go with my handyman suggestion of going with clear sealing the front area. Someone else suggested this for garage.

For the garage I will look at the clear seal or DIY EPOXY coating (like the above link) and then probably use carpet tiles to one section.

  • As someone who has done alot of epoxy coatings for a living, i would recommend the proffesional to install it. His price sounds reasonable if he is going to grind the surface to prepare it, prime it and coat it. The bunnings kit could work if you prepared the subrate properly but it doesnt sound like you have the equiptment.
