Please Recommend Me a Quiet and Powerful Portable Air Conditioner

Hi all,

Does anybody own or have recommendation on good portable air conditioner which can cool a living room 12x6 m and is not too noisy?

I am not very familiar with this type of products and have no idea what brands are good. Because we have a small child we are looking for something quiet.

Can anybody share their experience and recommend a reliable and not too expensive air con?

Thanks s lot:)

  • They are all noisy as the compressor is running indoors, in the same room as you… :(

A quieter option might be an evaporative cooler that blows directly onto you?

    • Would that be enough to cool room on hot days like we experienced last year?

  • +1

    powerful = compressor

    compressor = noisy

  • +2
    1. Get a firm a4 sheet of paper
    2. Use left or right hand or both (for extra power) to grip paper
    3. Fan yourself using an up and down motion.
    • Don't forget to fold it into a concertina shape!

  • They are all noisy.

    • If I have portable aircon in the next room is it that noisy that people can not fall asleep?

      • +1

Maybe, but why would you have it on if you're not in the room?

Also just noticed the size of the room… The aircon will struggle to cool that. You need to make sure you get a good deal between the window/door you are ducting to.

If it's your house, get a proper split system

  • I'm currently going through this dilemma in Melb preparing for summer with toddler and no ac.

I have a couple of different fans and recently purchased the Dyson Column fan but returned as it wasn't that powerful. I went to HN and saw the Vornado air circulators - they seem pretty good, I pick up two and hopefully they'll do the job. They are not that noisy and they seem to cool the room down - although, it's hard to tell with the weather not being that warm.

My main stopping points with the portable ac are:

    noise
window open/somewhere for the pipe to go
    drys out the air
    heat from the uniy

    • I bought Vornado 660 from Costco for $150, yours? I choose this over the Cat one as this only need 50w and blow less noise and seems to do the job.

      • $199 from HN - I haven't bitten the bullet on a costco membership yet… but it would've saved me $40! :-(

        • Same model.

        • $50 saved! I notice this model still around $220+ on eBay.

I always thought with Costco membership you will end up buying lots of things that you never bought before and overall you may spend much more money compare if you don't have it.

        • @foxmulder: Costco is $60 pa right?

        • @Xiongmao: yes and you get 2 cards and can bring 2 guests per card

  • I saw a portable AC that was two-piece in Bunnings years ago - like a wall split system, with the compressor outside. You stick the compressor on the balcony of an apartment or something. That should be much better at cooling and quieter. I haven't seen one in a while, but I'd google that if I were renting.

Other than that, the ones I've seen are all BOTH too loud AND too weak to be worth buying.

  • Looks like it is not easy / impossible to find what I am looking for.
Obviously the best option is proper a/c but I am renting.

I was thinking about something like this :

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-16000-btu-portable-air-co…

Not sure if I can post link like this here.

    • Window aircon, ask real-estate if it would be an option.

  • Quiet,Powerful,Portable
    Pick 2

  • How about air cooler? Is that going to work?

  • Powerful
    Portable
    Cheap
    Quiet

    Pick two
The top two will get you a good portable aircon, the bottom two will make you wish you picked the top two.

This was the temperature last summer for me

    I have both of these.
    Polocool 6KW
    Polocool 4.4KW

4.4 kw is for my bedroom.

  • I have had many portable air conditioners and can safely say that the Polocool 6KW is the best I have had, however saying this… a 12 x 6m room will be a struggle on days above 30… The manufacturer suggests such a room would only do well if the house is in the shade and has good insulation. I have a similar situation and have 2 of these AC's and it cools it but its noisy and expensive to buy and run.

But I noticed the best bet is, together with the AC… hang black fabric OUTSIDE your windows on the hottest days as the sun coming in will kill your AC effectiveness.

Overall, I spent $2000 on 2 portable units + electricity costs approx $2.00/hr to run these which you need to keep running all day as ALL portable AC's have terrible eficiency… so it costs $20 a day so I only use on the hottest days. It ends up being cheaper, quiter and easier to get a fixed system installed.

  • You will struggle to cool 12x6m room with a portable air conditioner.

We bought one for our rental when our daughter was born. We use it on hot nights, pointed into her room, so she can sleep. It's loud, but it's like whitenoise.

The window box air conditioners are more efficient, but not as portable… Or if you're going to be in your house for a while, pay a bit extra and have reverse cycle aircon installed…

Oh, and ours costs about 50c/hr to run.

  • Thanks guys for sharing your experience. I learned a lot and probably had to accept that if I want powerful aircon it will consume too much energy and will be noisy.
