Cheapest Way to Send Boxes to France

I have to send some books and a small amount of furniture over to France for a family member. Does anyone know of a cheap way to do this?

Cheapest way is probably going down the beach, walk about 10 metres out in the water and then push it box in the general direction of France. It is free, not sure how long or the accuracy of delivery.

Does it come with a tracking number?

    • I'm sure it'll still reach there quicker than using Afailure Post.

  • by boat

  • Furniture? Probably cheaper to just buy it in France!
That's gonna cost a lot of money to shift it

    What size furniture?

It could be cheaper for you to book a return ticket to Paris in the sales, fly over and give it to them yourself.

  • Think about what you are saying. You want to ship furniture, something available in every country on the planet, around the other side of said planet. It's crazy, unless you are talking about a renaissance armoire, in which case you wouldn't be on Ozbargain.

His family members' frugality probably allowed them to purchase that armoire in the first place.

      • No one who owns a $2million piece of furniture has ever frequented this site.

Well they may have, That’s how you save $2million, eating free Mainland cheese and Hegas bread sandwiches and brodening bargains for resale.

@Elppa8: I think the first thing you should save for is a dictionary.

        • @Burnertoasty: yes, I misspelt Helga’s, but that’s probably not in the dictionary. If you’re referring to “brodening” a search shows that it is in use on this site which gives it some legitimacy. In fact “broden” is in the Urban Dictionary, although the entry was submitted by contributor “Broden”.

the furniture might be a 80k high yield investment, like a gold plated ikea couch.

Put furniture/books into a box and send it!

Cheaper than buying a plane ticket for it ;)

This thread contains some poor advice especially those people stating the shipping will be expensive without knowing the entire situation or offering any useful help.

The cost-effectiveness of sending furniture overseas will depend on the original purchase price and current market price. Is the furniture to be sent expensive? If not a possible solution is to sell the furniture on eBay and wire the money.

Dimensions of the furniture should also be considered, for example, is the object a $1000 lamp or a bookcase? Depending on the answer the depreciation loss from selling on eBay compared to shipping to France will be considerably different.

There are also other factors to consider such as if the object has sentimental value to the owners or otherwise.

    I'd suggest you look at:

      without knowing the entire situation

Welcome to any forum post question.

All we can do is assume, given OP has decided to post an run and not check back within nearly 9 hours of posting (and counting).

We have offered useful help… Don't post it.

If however the items have sentimental value or are of high value, would you really post on a bargain forum about such a thing? Transporting high value items properly won't be cheap, but the suggestions from here will likely be cheap solutions, which could result in the items getting damaged in transit. Insurance coverage won't help if the item is irreplaceable.

So instead of attacking the commenters on posting these sorts of answers, maybe get answers from the OP first.

      • Easy, Easy big fella, stop getting over excited no offense was intended. Instead, the post merely observed that your quick reply was not particularly helpful in this situation nor did it address the question asked by the OP.

Unless you secretly hold the notion OP lacks the capacity to figure out if a piece of furniture is worth sending based upon quotes. Is this the case?

"If however the items have sentimental value or are of high value, would you really post on a bargain forum about such a thing? "

The thing you are on is called the internet, people from different walks of life and different values are on it as well. Therefore, just because I'd do something would not mean another person would and vice versa.

"Transporting high-value items properly won't be cheap, but the suggestions from here will likely be cheap solutions, which could result in the items getting damaged in transit. Insurance coverage won't help if the item is irreplaceable"

If they are living in France it's either ship the object which has a slight risk or sell it and never use it again, it's highly unlikely that they will move back to Australia.

Besides, I'm under the impression that the object is small and easy to ship. Else this assumption is wrong and it's probably a book self which is not worth shipping hence my idea to sell it on eBay than wire the funds.

"So instead of attacking the commenters on posting these sorts of answers, maybe get answers from the OP first."

At this point, it seems you are trolling and trying to pick an argument with someone. Because one of the main reasons of my post was to ask questions.

So, in short, you have not contributed any additional information that OP did not know and you're probably trying to start an argument because you are bored.

"All we can do is assume, given OP has decided to post an run and not check back within nearly 9 hours of posting (and counting)."

Maybe the OP left because he/she felt the answers were inadequate, did you ever consider that?

"furniture, in general, is LARGE, and will be COSTLY to send via any method…."

There is a wide range of things that are classed as furniture and so I'm assuming the OP wants to ship something small. If not they can sell it on eBay and wire the funds which my comment stated.

So my bases are covered either way.

"Unless "it's*" 'rare', the cost of sending a couch will outway everything!"

Totally, agree and it's the reason I mentioned market price compared to the purchase price.

    • The cost-effectiveness of sending furniture overseas will depend on the original purchase price and current market price.

furniture, in general, is LARGE, and will be COSTLY to send via any method….

Unless its 'rare', the cost of sending a couch will outway everything!

  • I used these guys to move my stuff from UK once:

    http://www.sevenseasworldwide.com/en-au

It came on a boat. It took forever. But it did arrive.

    • Was it value for money?

    • Not many ways to get from oz to UK…… Boat or plane basically!

Add a zero or two if you want it to fly ;)

  • For the books, Australia Post is probably going to be the easiest and cheapest solution. It is expensive but will probably be best, and make sure you add tracking so you can claim if it goes missing. Weigh and measure them (including packaging) and use the online postage calculator.

For the furniture, they are possibly big and bulky and you would probably want to go to a freight exporter business. They can add it into one of their containers if they have one going to France.

  • Having Googled "consolidate freight from Australia to France" I found cargomaster.com.au/services/import/freight-france-australia/.

Never used them myself, but I'd call them and see if they have some space available, perhaps sharing a container with another client or whatever.

  • Thanks for all the replies. Some were extremely constructive. Some were eh……not so constructive
