Samsonite 81cm Cosmolite Suitcase $329 (63% off RRP) @ Bagworld

So I know Samsonite is permanently on 40-50% sale at most retailers, however I haven't seen a new (relatively speaking) model at 60+% discount often. Only the copper colour is $359, the rest are what you'd usually expect at $539. I already have one of these and like it. It is super light at 2.9KG for 81cm and looks great.

  • Do you find the 81cm too big? I am not sure whether this or the 75cm would be more appropriate?

I prefer larger for checked luggage - as there is very little physical handling, I don't see the benefit of a slightly smaller size (For that long holiday you might just run out of space for that last 6cm item =P).

For carry-on luggage however, I prefer a slightly smaller one (I use the cosmolite 55cm).

The 81cm model exceeds the linear dimension limits for many airlines though (e.g. Qantas and Air NZ have a maximum of 158 linear cm) - the 75cm model scrapes in at 157cm.

Just act furious and tell Qantas you purchased it from their store =P

        • I use 75cm for the reasons stated above, last time I looked a number of overseas airlines would have similar issues. Its also easy to go over the weight limits with 81cm.

        • You're correct. I got the 75cm for this reason. And I've seen the two sizes side-by-side, the 75cm suitcase (combined with a 55cm carry-on) is a great combination and proved to be much more than I needed for 3 months in Europe!

    • 81cm is huge.

I prefer 75cm as my “large” suitcase whenever I can’t fit everything into my 68cm suitcase.

75cm with an expansion zip is another good option if you think you may need extra space. Personally I avoid them as my experience has been that the expansion zip has been a point of failure.

      • I always use a luggage strap with extra lock (something like this) on my Samsonite with expansion zip so it takes the stress off the zip. It survive >15 years countless number of flights. Recently one of the wheels finally failed.

        • Is one of these any good in 'replacing' the standard handles on the cosmolite? I find handles usually are first to go (heavy bags.. dragging along rough terrain.. baggage handlers throwing using the handle)

        • @justin_tsoi: I'm not a baggage handler but I guess they mostly look for the "easiest part" on the suitcase to grab, so they may just use the belt instead of flipping and turning your bag to find the handle.

Nice find. But I don't like the suitcases that open exactly at the half way point. When you open it and put it on the hotel luggage rack it invariably slides down/off due to the weight distribution on either side of the suitcase.

Sadly only the fabric suitcases have zippers that run on one end/side offering what is essentially an empty lid and a huge storage space beneath when laid on a luggage rack.

    • Get Rimowa you can't go wrong with those.

      • +2

Got any 60%+ deals off on Rimowa???

      • +1

obviously, you haven't seen rimowa luggage close up. all my rimowa bags open pretty much at the halfway point, which is the complaint being made about this specific Samsonite bag….

    • Samsonite spin trunk is a compromise, not as light as the cosmolite but a lot cheaper too. My sister uses these for the reasons you have stated.

    • Look at Lojel suitcases.
Hardcases that open at the top.

I think the range is the Lojel Cube

  • It also doesn't have rubbing strips to guard against damage when you go up steps.

  • most retailers do price match..

I bought 2 cosomolite for $400 each from luggage direct. Only reason as this copper is discontinued line and hence its getting cheap. So we paid a tid bit more to get colors we wanted.

  • score30 can be use on other suitcases, but required a minimum of $300 of total spending.

Not the best reviews on the wheels or zippers from the couple on productreview but seem to do very well in other reviews. Giving it a shot! Cheers OP.

  • SCORE30 has expired but AIR5 still gives an extra 5% off
