How to Gain Weight Fast and Cheap?

I am having trouble putting on weight even after taking desperate measures.

Two weeks ago i started my "pizza diet", which consists of 3 frozen cheese pizzas and 2 star beef mince, both from Aldi. At this time my weight was 75kg.

In a day I would eat 900g of cheese pizza (2304 calories) plus 500g of 2 star beef mince (1430 calories) which would amount to 3734 calories per day NOT INCLUDING my breakfast and lunch.

So today I checked my weight and I was shocked - 74kg!!! All this effort and money was barely enough to keep my weight and not gain a single kilogram, but also lose one!

Can someone recommend a good way to gain weight without spending a fortune?

It is not that I want to get fat, I just don't want to be called skinny as I feel I don't have enough mass for my height.

Any help is appreciated…

kfc and maccas and soft drink then take a nap after eating. dont work too.

Work out at the gym and put on some muscle

    • +8

OP this is your only good solution.
I'm skinny as well so I know what needs to be done. If you eat like crap you'll just get an ugly belly. What you want is muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat.

Besides working out, get yourself some protein powders (the ones with the carbs.) that'll help with giving your body the right stuff to gain. (Just make sure you work out or you'll just get fat.)

I did this for 6 months and noticed a great change…then I got lazy and went back to my old ways :P.

Cant upvote this enough! I use to weigh like 50 something in my teens i started the gym at maybe 21 and i am now 26 i weigh abought 74 give or take with healthy amount of muscle and fat. I have a happy medium of eating what i want and now i only currently work out 3 days a week compared to the 5 day in first few years. Nothing puts better/healthier weight than this.

The easiest way to put on weight is to get Married!

Wife will cook you good meals and like a good husband you eat it all with a smile!

She won’t let you go to the gym because that’s where all the Instagram girls hang out! And she will fatten you up so she gets to keep you all to herself!!!

      • I approve of this comment.

I'm a skinny guy, and I've been under 60kgs my entire life. Two weeks of honeymooning, enjoying tourist food and 'physical activities' I put on 4kg.

That's 6-7% of my body mass in two weeks!!

t 900g of cheese pizza (2304 calories) plus 500g of 2 star beef mince (1430 calories)

Reading this just gave me constipation. For the love of all that is holy, please incorporate some veg into your diet.

If you have problems with weight, you should visit a nutritionist dietitians.

Nutrition science is not very well understood even by GP's (my father is a GP and he's not well versed in nutrition) so a specialist is somebody you should talk to first.

    • My lunch is 1 cucumber, 2 tomatoes and 2 carrots + a big bowl of oatmeal (oats + boiling water) together with smooth peanut butter mixed in.

      • +15

Eating Cheese Pizza and Mince beef will not get you anywhere. All it will do is affect your cholesterol levels and eventually your heart. You ll be skinny on the outside and fat on the inside.
I am like you with fast metabolism apparently. I weighed 60 kgs when I was 26 years old and tried every bloody trick of stuffing myself with all kinds of food.
Here's what you've gotta do. I put on 15 Kgs in 1 year, but you ll see gains in 2 months time.
You need to be really strict with your diet. High Protein + Serious gym. Might feel like giving up in a month, continue.
Good balance of Carbs coz you need energy when you work out plus protein (diet + powder). Dont overdo the gym. Give your body rest. Youtube is your friend to workout a plan that you think will work for you. 40-45 mins max intense gym workout. Dont waste your time checking out other people in the gym. Stay in the rhythm, time everything ( sets + rest in between sets). Diet again very important (Simple carbs such as brown rice or sweet potato etc). Eat like a horse and work out hard. You ll see some serious gains.

        • +1 for simple carbs… I am finally gaining weight this way. Also I only do Tabata (google it) - 4 minutes a day of intense exercise before bed. Protein shake (before bed)of at least 40g of pea protein as I cannot tolerate lactose.
Lots of good spring water (that's what the body is made up of) so stay hydrated.

Edited to add: Get a good quality digestive enzymes. That was the problem I had..no matter how much I ate.. it went straight through.. Digestive Enzymes help your body learn how to absorb again. Use for short periods only as the body needs to start producing it's own.

You need to see a doctor, your body is either burning energy like crazy, or you are just taking huge dumps and your body is not absorbing anything.

      Could be parasite (tapeworms?)

      • +76

If he has tapeworms that can eat a few thousand calories of food a day, he needs an exorcist not a doctor.

    • If you are unlucky you have cancer so no use worrying, otherwise see a Psychologist. There is nothing wrong with 75kg and you'll gain weight as you get older.

    Come live with me

That's one skill I am good at

Download the KFC app and get the family box every night, good times and weight gain

    • haha, living the good life aye?

  • 3734 calories per day

Calories are only part of your diet. How much liquid are you consuming?

    • About 2 litres of water per day, I don't know exactly.

      • +10

There aren't any calories in water. Replace some of that water with full cream milk (which has water in it as well as delicious calories).

        • +3

Substitute water for 2 litres maple flavoured syrup daily. Come back one year.

        • +5

          @BartholemewH:

      • +2

You need to substitute all water for soft drinks, alcohol and flavoured milk.

Might be an underlying health condition if nothing happened after eating all that crap.

If you don't want to be skinny, lift weights and build muscle… all the rubbish you're currently eating will just go to your belly and clog your arteries.

    • +3

I had a mate who was always skinny. He died last year, age about 29.

Do look into this; for your own sake.

      • +1

Did he die from being skinny?

        • Skinny was part of the condition. He had a cancer of types.

        • +2

@eagleanthony: Losing weight was more likely the result of having the cancer, not so much having a cancer of skinniness. Sorry for your loss.

  • I have the same problem too, I'm tall and skinny…. It's not so bad now I've actually got a slight ripple at my belly :).

I could eat and eat and eat and never put on weight, thought I was doing physical activity.
Once I had 13 plates of spare ribs at a buffet and 1 or 2 other plates of other main course, and about 5 bowls and plates of dessert.

  • I ate lemonade, sustagen, biscuits and fries to gain weight when I was young.

Also as mentioned by everyone else difficulty putting on weight should be looked at.

    • +3

I would check the use by date on the lemonade & sustagen, that stuff is meant to be drunk, not eaten.

  • +8

Are you comparing apples with apples?

I mean did you just do number two after the second weigh in, but not the first, etc.? Because you don't seem to eat much fibre, you might do a number two every week or so and it will probably be a massive turd.

    • +4

I don't know why, but I laughed hard at your comment.

Unrelated but according to my old digital scales, I weighed MORE after taking a number 2. Like I would weigh myself, straight away take a poo, and then weigh myself again and have gained like 200g. It was like I had helium poo or something.

  • +1

    doughnuts.

  • +50

    Get Married.

    • In otherwords, stop fapping on the daily

  • +12

I have the same problem. I once ate KFC straight for a week as a "test" and also did not gain wieght (I weigh less than 60kg then, still do…). I went to the doctor, took blood tests. No tapeworms or health issues. Low cholesterol too. Everything came out saying I am very healthy, doctor said this is "normal" for my background…My friends thought I had tapeworms like many of the above comments.

I "worked out" with weights and bench press etc for 10 months, no weight gain. Considerable strength gain (from 0 chinups to 20,unable to bench at all to 35kg bench (more than half my weight) however seeing no weight gain for the insane hard work I was putting in, I lost all motivation and quit. I started off with little to no fat on my body to begin with however that was all gone and I had a much more "toned" look, however that was not enough imo for the effort I put in. I followed what my friends did in terms of diet and workouts-worked out and ate together. However, they gained considerable weight, I didnt. Hence why I gave up. Way too much effort for insignificant gain. Id out on a small t shirt and still be unable to "fill" it, same as before. Felt like shit.

I am still healthy now, weigh less than 60 and have no health issues. All my life though I've always eaten healthy (lots of veg and meat) no junk food. No smoking no alcohol. Only drink water (hate soft drinks and juice).

I am leaving this here to show you, that you are not the only one. Maybe it might help?

I hate this to be honest. I feel like an adult in a childs body and keep copping shit from younger siblings for it.

    • How tall are you?

      • I'm about 175cm tall.

        • Oh nice! I'm ~175cm and anywhere between 57kg and 59kg.

    • +8

Ahbal, I really think you haven't given yourself enough time to get the results you want. Even though I've been an on-off gym goer for decades, I decided to start lifting heavy only about 3-4 years ago. I now deadlift 125kg (4 reps), which is 2.4 x my body weight, bench press 50kg (5 reps) and do pull-ups (3 sets of 10 reps). I'd never done any of these movements before, and on top of that, I'm female and in my fifties. The only other exercise I'd done previously was running - 2-3 km runs around the neighbourhood, when I was in my thirties.

I think there's hope for everyone, it's just a matter of patience and persistence. You can't fight your genes but that shouldn't stop you from working towards achieving your genetic potential.

      • I thank you for your input and motivation. My problem isn't seeing strength results, as I felt that after the first day. It was the body weight. How would you advise to approach that? Or just ignore it and focus on strength?

        • +4

In my case, the muscle mass gain came with the increase in strength. You may not see a change in your body weight initially because you'll be losing fat at the same time as you're increasing your muscle mass. If you keep at it, the muscle gains will get progressively easier and more sustained.

        • +2

@RoughMetaphors: Yes thats what happened last time! Once I lost all the fat (after a month or two) I essentially hit a wall. I kept trying for 8 months after that (eating was harder than workout tbh) to no avail. However, since I am older now, hopefully if I try again Ill get a better result. Thanks again for the advice.

      • +3

Impressive. I doubt many guys on OZB can do 10 pull-ups. I will give your approach a go. Currently just going for more - at 13 at the moment and do at various times a day as I pass my chin up bar and mix it up with chin ups and swinging, etc. Also do branches and monkey bars, etc. with the kids and wife getting into the swing of things.

        • +1

Thank you, and you are welcome.

It is good to hear about how you are going with progress, keep it up! From what I experienced, motivation is the most important thing. Following that is diet. Eat healthy. My mistake I believe was focusing too much on working myself to the limit, and not focusing on staying motivated and thus I got burned out. Keep it steady, consistent, and healthy.

After this thread I am feeling motivated to get back into it. I still have the home gym items still around, and already maintain a healthy diet. All I need is motivation to workout.

        • +1

@Ahbal: RoughMetaphors is also very impressive, being able to do 3 reps of 10 and is in her fifties!

        • @Ahbal: I had difficulty putting on weight, but with some research I managed to both greatly increase my strength and gain 10kg in 3 months. I'd recommend starting here for info: https://www.reddit.com/r/Fitness/wiki/getting_started

I would love to see a video of you deadlifting 125kgx4 @ 50 years old. I see instagram fitness chicks deadlifting like 120kg and they're 30 years old.

        • It's not that uncommon. Just look up masters powerlifting. A friend of mine just set the masters II WR for deadlift, 185@56kg. She just looks like an ordinary, not overweight, lady.

        • @macrocephalic:
          At 50 years old?

        • @18: Yes, the masters II age range is 50-59. The lifter I specifically mentioned is actually 56 and competes in the 57kg category.

    • Check your hormone levels.

      • How would I do that? My doctor already had me take a lot of blood tests, like for thyroids for example. Can't remember if hormone levels were involved.

    • A 35kg bench, after 10 months of training, even for someone as small as you, is very little. As a general rule, I would consider anything less than your bodyweight to be a poor bench for any male who has trained more than a few months. Mine is only a bit over my bodyweight, but I'm fat, and have a bad elbow. The first time I ever went to a lifting gym I could bench about what my lean bodymass is (which is significantly less than my actual bodyweight).

Just cos you don't gain weight doesn't mean your not killing your body… Start eating like 500g lean protein like chicken or pork steaks.

Eat grains or rice for carbs.

    Eggs.

You get my drift, body "builders" eat this way for a reason, it puts weight on.

Failing that just start drinking f ton of milk, it's designed to blow 70kg baby cows into 400kg cows lol.

  • damn i bet op has some good metabolism going on. Just stack on white rice, eggs, and protein

  • +1

I find nothing builds muscle mass better than compound exercises like back squats, deadlifts, bench press, lunges, etc. Well-developed glutes, quads and hamstrings will add a considerable amount to your weight.

    KFC

I'd be seeing your G.P. if you haven't already done so………putting aside a specific eating disorder or known medical condition, persistent weight loss or inability to gain adequate weight is a sign something is not right? I would be having my thyroid levels checked as well as other medical tests to rule out any problems? (e.g. coeliac disease or cancer) It is better to be safe than sorry.

  • I say surrender yourself to your inner FATTY!

Then have a heart attack in your fifties.

  • An approach that just occurred to me is to do the reverse of what Craig Anderson did - watch Miso Hungry / My Japanese Diet (SBS). You only have to watch the first 5 minutes or so.

  • -1

I'm not a dietitian, but protein powder diet?

    • -1

Protein is satiating. Eating too much protein will make it harder for the guy to eat as many calories as he wants to. Liquid calories ARE a great idea however.

      • True but not sure if OP want to bulk up or be a blob.
To bulk up, best way to eat protein and do some weights, else all those access calories will be end up in the belly :)

  • A diet of mcdonalds, KFC and Hungry Jack's will work.

    • +1

That alone won't work because he's burning calories too fast. Without hitting the gym regularly the most it'll do is make him skinny-fat.

  • 1, You don't have enough data yet. Give it some time.
2, Get your hormones/thyroid checked by a GP.
3, Target calorically dense foods (as you have been doing).
4, Full fat milk. Drink a lot of it.
5, Oil. Put it in/on things. Eat/drink those things.
6, Google hardgainers diets, eating to grow etc. There are a lot of people out there like you who are trying to add mass.

  • Can someone tell me how to lose weight fast and cheap please?

    • +1

      Artificial enhancement….

In all seriousness though , caloric deficit. Nothing too drastic or you'll feel like shit, slow controlled in a way its maintainable and you'll be right.

If you want it to be quick, cut more calories just nothing too dangerous. There's a shitload of information out about this stuff get googling.

    • +2

eat a lot less food, bam!

no joke I hear it all the time "how do I lose weight…" answer get a little hungry most of the time, don't starve yourself but eat smaller meals and eat less often. Also understand that being a little hungry means your body is in a calorie deficit which means you're losing weight, too often people eat so they never feel hungry then wonder why they can't lose weight.

      • +2

I see this is a pet peeve of yours too.

        • +2

I guess I'm just frustrated by people who want things but aren't willing to be uncomfortable to get them.

          I.e
Want a good body but won't do difficult workouts
Want a pay raise but wont ask the boss for it/ask how to get it.
Want a job but won't accept low pay jobs.
Want a affordable house but refuse to look at moving interstate.
          ect ect

        • +1

          @dylan345:

lol, yeah. The house one especially, I want a house. Oh but not in that area, I'm not trash. And I eat out 3x a week. I deserve to, it's a basic human right.

      • -1

get a little hungry most of the time […] Also understand that being a little hungry means your body is in a calorie deficit which means you're losing weight

This is a dangerous path, potential of leading to disordered eating (and maybe an eating disorder). Tread carefully.
