Portable Air Compressor - worth it?

Hey All

Just looking at this portable air compressor (https://dailyfastdeals.com/products/air-dragon-portable-air-…) and was wondering if this is going to be handy.

Anyone else using this already? Feedback?

Thanks All

  • I doubt it would be able to inflate a tire, the issue with small compressors is the duty cycle as they overheat.
I have a $15 one I use to inflate bike tires and an occasional top up on a trailer tyre, it is adequate.
If you have visions of using it to reflate 4WD tires, or a similar usage, then you will need to pay more like $300 for it to be useful.
To be honest, I also have a hand pump I use much more often to inflate balls, top up bikes etc.

    • +1 on the hand pump for tyres, balls etc. I've got a 'track' or 'floor' pump for bikes. One you put you foot on the base and the cylinder is about 600mm high. Good volume so it is fairly efficient and it's virtually silent and requires no power source. I wouldn't want to pump up a flat car tyre with it (it could do it though), but it is great for bike tyres and soccer balls etc, much better than a hand pump.

  • Handy for what? Not much I suspect, but it might be useful for bicycle tyres and balls etc. As above, I wouldn't want to be waiting for it to pump up 4wd tyres after being on the beach, it'd take ages. I don't believe the advertising showing it inflating a big 4wd tyre in a few seconds.

I bought. $200ish one for my 4wd and it will reinflate all four tyres in about 10mins, including setup and pack up and gets pretty hot doing it. It is about 4 times the size and I do not dare run it off the battery for that long without keeping the engine running, it uses a fair bit of power.

  • Grab a portable Air tank!

Depending on the amount of air you need (usually top ups) it will do the job, it would easily re-inflate a flat too, which would be sufficient to get you to a servo 100% inflate all tyres and top up your portable tank again.

    • Do you mean a portable compressor with tank? Is there a 12v device?

      • Hi,

No, this is simply an air tank, that you can fill up at any servo.

It is a just in case measure.

    • Given a reasonable 12v compressor is not too expensive, I'd rather have something I could use for more than one fill and wouldn't require me to pre-fill just in case.

      • true but even the smaller 12 compressors are susceptible to overheating dependant on how long it will take to pump the tyre and also to which pressure.

        • This is true, but I'm talking about a decent 12v compressor. Sure mine gets hot, but it also runs quickly and long enough without tripping to reinflate four 4wd tyres from beach pressure to road pressure in around 10mins.

  • +1

It will inflate the tyre from empty to full, but when it comes to pressurizing the air inside the tyre it will struggle

  • If you get a puncture it isn't going to be of any help.

Use it to maintain tyre pressure? Unlikely.

The cordless version? Will the battery be charged when you need to 'use' it.

    Simply put, don't.
