28 Degrees Credit Card and CitiBank Plus Debit Card, but no matter what you still have to pay LOCAL ATM Fee, as you are not their customers and using their ATM :)

    • No. That’s a credit card not a ATM card…

OP, citibank plus is what you need

Sorry, I worded my post badly.

I have a credit card from a UK bank with no overseas transactions fees. I'm trying to find out if there's a bank here in Australia that doesn't charge people with overseas cards to use their ATMs.

    thanks!

    • Oh Thanks, we have to start all over again, sorry, I am out :)

      That’s a completely different question…

Check with your UK bank. They might have a partnership with a bank here. It’d make sense given there are a lot of brits here

Australian Bank ATM Fees and Charges

A card issued by Barclays Bank used at Westpac, and Citibank at Citibank seems to be the only fee free contenders.

    ANZ shows as $1.

ATM's are supposed to give you the cost of fee before you proceed.
Perhaps shop around. Not sure how accurate the guide may be.

  • i think CBA has no ATM owner fee now so you should not need to pay ATM fee if you withdraw from CBA ATM. But you may still need to pay for overseas withdrawal fees associated with your own bank (rather than the ATM owner fee).

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Thanks for the replies. CBA are still going to charge for overseas cards. I'll try ANZ and report back.

    • Apparently they all will continue charging foreign cards (i.e. the Big 4 that dropped fees including NAB and Westpac).

I feel a little dirty now since I hate it when foreign ATMs charge us. Especially the exorbitant fees in Thailand.

      • Especially the exorbitant fees in Thailand.

I remember that. And that was a flat fee, wasn't it. I remember taking out excessive amounts of money to lessen the hit. I also slightly remember there weer some ATMs in Bangkok where you could get fee free withdrawals, but were few and far between.

        • Yeah I believe Citibank used to be free for everyone in its 3 branches in Bangkok but I wonder if that's even the case for us Citibank Plus cardholders these days.

The going rate is 220 baht these days ($8.40…ouch!).

To get a Thai bank account you at least need the 90 day non-immigrant visa (not a long term tourist visa) and some banks require a work visa. This allows you to transfer money with transferwise without the added anxiety of carrying $2000 AUD cash to exchange or pulling out the max withdrawal every time.

But Thai banks are weird and sometimes charge you 15 baht to use an ATM in a province you didn't establish your account.

    • A withdrawl from a CBA ATM last year with a card from a European bank didn't give any warning about a fee being charged by CBA. Not sure if there actually was a fee charged, though.

  • How long are you in the country for?

Even on a tourist visa you can open an Australian bank account. If you have a document with your UK address on it for address verification you can then take advantage of the Transferwise fee-free sign-up deals to get the mid-market rate up to 3000 GBP (you can use any affiliate link e.g. https://www.icomparefx.com/transferwise-coupon/, the deal posted yesterday on OzBargain is only up to 500 GBP since they pay less for referrals).

If it's just a short trip then obviously it's not worth the effort involved.
