Building No Claims Discount (NCD) Rating as a Named Driver?

Can you building your own NCD rating as an additional named driver?
I have been searching online but can only find answers relating to UK and not AU.

For example:
My car insurance is under my mum's name, as it is cheaper as she has a NCD rating of 1 therefore securing a good discount.
I have been listed as a named additional driver on this comprehensive car insurance policy for the past 2 years.

Does this now mean I have an NCD rating of 2 YEARS (RATING 4)? or am I still at 0 years (RATING 6)?

I am sure the insurance company can give you the correct answer, try them

  • I am pretty sure that as long as you can show proof that you have been a named driver for 2 years then you can claim the discount.

The cheap as chips insurers are the only ones that have ever asked me for a copy of insurance showing mthe no claim I have been claiming. (This was because I was moving my insurance to them).

  • I found my insurance was cheaper applying as a ‘new’ customer rather than renewing with the rating 1 discount. By as much as the claimed discount. That is, the discount in reality appears to be a lazy tax marketed as a discount off some higher amount that a new customer wouldn’t pay anyway.

Guess it depends on your insurer and circumstances though….

  • Some insurer don't ask for your NCD status but rather how many years you've had your licence & whether you've had any claim and calculate your NCD from that.

When I took out my first policy, I have had my licence for many years (but have not been a named driver in any policy) and have not made any claim. I filled out the online quote and AAMI (& possibly some other insurers) automatically applied NCD to my quote (& ultimately my policy).
