Coles account cover plus - iPhone 8 Purchase

Hi Everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I just received my new Coles Mastercard with account plus protection. My wife would like a new iPhone 8 256gb to replace her (now cracked) aging iPhone 6. I’m hoping to use the account plus protection to offset the cost of the phone over a 2 year period but there are a few conditions that need to be met. The phone must still be stocked at the same retailer 2 years from now and must be cheaper than our purchase price (obviously). So if 2 years from now the 256gb iPhone 8 is no longer available then my plan will not work out. To those of you with more experience in this field. What iPhone memory size is most likely to still be available in 2 years time and what retailer would you recommend buying from. Success stories and advise welcome and thanks in advance.

James

Make sure that you keep receipts, I've made a few claims on my account cover, got some cash back on my surface pro 4, tv, and a few other electronic doodads (works best on big ticket items).

I'd probably say go somewhere like a Goodguys or Jbhifi / harvey norman - but I'd probably look to see which of these stores currently stock older gen iphones at a discount in order to allow you to sort of predict what they do currently, which might reflect what they do in the future.

  • Don't wait until the 2 year mark either.
    1) you might come across a good sale
    2) you can claim more than once.

I have saved probably $2k in the last 3 years claiming price drops on electronic goods (Coles MC now, but previously the 28D has the same policy but for 6 months).

Just remember its maximum $600 per item - I've hit it on my latest phone.

On top of keeping receipts, make sure you have proof of the lower price - as soon as I see it I will take a snippet because even if the sale is over before they process my claim they'll still accept it. The initial request for a claim doesn't actually ask for supporting documentation - that request will come a few days later via email

  • Thanks for the replies so far, much appreciated. From what I can tell, the iPhone 6 32gb is still on sale at most places. I believe at the time this came out they hand 16, 32 or 64gb so it looks like the mid range option is the one that remains available. I think at the moment the iPhone 8 is available in 64, 256 and 512gb so the 256gb may well be the safe option.

    • Keep in mind the 32GB iPhone 6 is actually relatively new (launched this year I believe).

Apple only sold the iPhone 6 in 16, 64, and 128GB capacities. So If Apple bumped up the storage of the iPhone 8 before the two year mark, it would technically be a different model, so you would not be able to use account cover plus.

As mentioned, you don't need to wait two years, you can claim multiple times within the two year period.

Try using a website like PriceHispter or PRICE.DELIVERY to alert you of price drops by email.

  • Thanks for the info you’ve all provided.

I’ve looked into this a bit further and I should have been researching the iPhone 6s models and pricing not the iPhone 6 as the 6s is now two years old and would be the limit of any price protection claim.

I think Apple direct is the way to go as they still stock the 32gb and 128gb iPhone 6s but I can find anyone else that does. I believe it was released in 16, 32, 64 and 128gb variants so Apple has kept the mid and high memory models available.

I’ll get the 256gb iPhone 8 this weekend and hopefully this model will still be on sale 2 years from now.

Thanks again for everyone’s help and advice.

  • I made my first claim through Coles MC and it was approved within minutes for a Kobo ereader I purchased from Myers. I am also looking to buy an iPhone 8 64GB Gold for my wife but not sure if I should just buy it right now or wait for ebay sales and then buy from an Australian reputed business….
