I signed up for the $30 Optus deal, but now I want the $49 Telstra deal instead, am I stuck?

I signed up for this $30 Optus deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/336287

I have received the SIM card in the post, but I haven't ported, or activated or anything, it's still in the packaging.

But now I would rather do this Telstra deal instead: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/336381

Am I stuck with Optus? Or can I just bin the Optus SIM card and head over to JB Hi-Fi and sign up for the Telstra deal?

Edit: I called Optus, no problems, they just cancelled.. signed up for Telstra, but it's not porting over. I'm guessing it's because the ports were colliding or something like that. I'll go into JB in the morning and sort it out.

  • Why not ask Optus for starters?

r u really fussing about $5? fine… try asking optus for a refund

    • Not sure what you mean.. I'm just wanting to cancel with Optus, not get any refund, I have paid anything.

You're better off with the Optus deal. The telstra one will cost you an extra $228 and you're only getting a $200 voucher. So you're $28 worse off plus if you weren't going to spend $200 at jb hi fi anyway, then it is even worse. It's an extra 5gb, but unless you're going to definitely use 16-20GB every month then don't bother…

I actually have been looking for an Air Fryer and JB has it, so I will definetly use the $200 card.

So when you do the math, $49 x 12 months = $588, minus $200 gift card = $388, divided by 12 months = $32.33/month. So for $2.33/month extra I'd be getting 5GB/month more, plus I'd be on the Telstra network.

      • Are you sure the Telstra network is better in your location?

        • Yes, I live and work in a very metro area near a big shopping centre, great coverage no matter who I'm with.

@markcleveland: in that case why would you pay extra for a particular carrier, if they all work fine? You're paying $28 more and committing $200 of your money to jb hi fi for not a lot of gain. Of course if you know you always go over 15GB in a typical month then it makes sense

yeah i really think to join this optus. seems very good. and if you finish 20gb a month… well, just say you better find a job than browsing youtube all the time hahaha
kidding - unless you use it to tether your home internet

    • What happens after that? Don't they charge you anyway because it's what you signed up for?

Call Optus and tell them to cancel your order. You have to tell them or else they'll just activate the service automatically after few days (and you'll get a surprise bill!). They might tell you that you need to pay the payout figure but just be nice and tell them that you will not pay (in summary!).

    • Haha, my personal experience with optus, when the Optus SIM card post to your hand, no need to activated it, it has been activated even that was in unopened packages. And you will get the bill soon.

  • FYI you need an ABN for the Telstra deal

    • ABN

These are free and easy to get.

      • I'm aware of that. Was just pointing it out to OP so they don't rock up without one
