Have Optus sorted out the activation issues with these sims yet?

    • +9

DEFINITELY NOT. I started to port over on October 5th. Still not working! Have been in contact with Optus everyday. I can't even go elsewhere as they havent made it active. I have a TIO case, and a manager actually called me, then said please hold while I check with technical support… 20mins later I hung up. AVOID OPTUS!!

      • +1

yep, sounds like optus customer service quality

        • And still not connected. Can't use my netbanking for the whole month either as it sends security pin to my number…Anyone want to drop Optus Australia contacts that would be great. Cain G for those in the know did nothing.

    • +1

What's the problem they have? I just got an Optus SIM which was awaiting activation but the SIM was not recognized in 3 phones that I tried. They reassured me that they'd send a replacement. Is that the issue?

      • +1

You can read some of the comments here, but essentially the issue that others are having is that Optus are selling sims that don't work (they are unregistered) and Optus haven't been willing to replace/refund.

      • +2

Everyone here should sign a petition to the telco ombudsman about optus dodgey customer services and their staff.

        • +1

I'm still waiting for a response after i escalated the dispute to PayPal.

  • Hasn't Optus ended the Prepaid Daily Plus plan? I still see it on the deal link and also here

    • It's gone back to the way it was, $2 for 500MB, 30 day expiry, etc.

  • Nice deal! Thank you

  • I misread it as $30 SIM for free, and thought no thanks, not if it Optus.

  • +5

Last 2 Optus $30 sims for $5 I bought won't activate, I don't think they give a rats about it.

  • +7

DO NOT BUY!! They send you unregistered sims, you'll jump through their call centre hoops until you give up and take the loss.

    • +1

Second that, though had paid $10 ea.

  • +8

don’t waste your money with optus. i already report to TIO.

  • Prepaid is such a bad deal.

Sure, $5 for the first month then $30/month afterwards..

    • 3GB of data
    • $5 "extras" credit for international calls/texts or premium services
    • 28 day expiry

    $30 postpaid plan: http://offer.optus.com.au/spring-saver

    • 15GB of data
    • 300 international minutes
    • normal monthly billing
    • Your maths is out.

      $5 X 6 = $30
      3GB X 6 = 18GB

The $5 a month is better (you can use a new sim card each time you want to recharge). Not to mention on postpaid they'll charge you $10 when you go over your data and it will disappear at the end of the billing cycle, while prepaid data not only gives you a choice about getting extra data but your unused data rolls over. So prepaid data is worth more than postpaid data (you can use every last byte of it, it won't disappear). Oh, and if you want to use less data in a month, you can wait longer before recharging and keep using those unlimited calls/texts in the meantime saving more money. On the postpaid plan, if you use only 5gb in the month then you've paid for 10gb and thrown it away.

      • +1

But it's unlikely the SIMs will actually work, so sorry in a way that logic is flawed.

        6 X $5 SIMs = 6 PITA and 0 GB.

        • +1

True - you have to be persistent but I can understand that a lot of people won't have the time for that.

        • +3

          @Quantumcat:
How would much time are people wasting to activate one SIM?
          1 purchase online
1 drive to post office to sign for
          2 failed attempts online
          1 googling around for troubleshooting
1 googling to find there's no live chat
          1 trip instore
1 online activation of blank SIM
1 call to request credit transfer to blank
1 call as transfer failed and exceeded ETA
1 call to request refund as credit refused
1 credit card / PayPal claim as no refund

Stacks up to the worst PITA waste of time deal on ozbargain ever.

        • +1

@chyawala: Yes to be fair it took me about 3 hours to activate the one I got last time.
          * 1 hour in webchat
          * 20 minutes in the store waiting to be served
          * 10 minutes while the store people played around
          * 30 minutes on the phone in the store
          * 1 hour in webchat 3 days later to enquire on it getting activated and make them activate it

        • +1

          @Quantumcat:
So bottom line is you do not recommend it. I don't under any circumstances, and with any amount of attempts data was not provided. It seemed like your comment above actually recommended this deal, which I find surprising. Probably best reserved for your frenemies.

        • @chyawala:
Just remembered there's also the call after the first attempt of activating the faulty SIM before being told to go in store.

        • +1

          @Quantumcat:
I've been waiting 15 days. Maybe 20+ hrs.. Still not working. If I hadn't ported my number I'd be long gone.

        • +1

@chyawala: well I think it is worthwhile if you have the time to dedicate to it. I only recently signed up to a postpaid plan that was still quasi-prepaid (Beyond) as I hate everything that goes with postpaid like them charging you money without asking or delaying reporting your data usage on purpose and being locked into anything.

  • +5

It happened with me as well. Not able to activate Sim after calling customer care and they asked me to visit Optus store. Waste of money and time.

  • +4

I thought I was the only one with this issue! SIM would give me an error when I entered in the number - spoke to technical support online,, who did nothing, and asked me to go to a store. So I went to the store, and they wanted nothing to do with it, so called Optus again who claim they will send me a replacement.

    • +2

I won't bother with a replacement. Just get a refund if you can.

  • +2

Same activation issues as above, dont waste your time buying it and then ending up getting a refund afterwards.

  • +1

Walk away unless you have heap of spare time trying to get a refund. They even ignore dispute escalated to Paypal.

  • +4

Rolling 25 20 cent coins down the street is a lot more satisfying than wasting your $5 and invaluable time trying to activate this. Stay away!!!!!

  • +3

Another one burned by Optus. Got a sim which I wanted to use for a house move - SIM did not work, call center could not help and store guys were clueless. Was told to get a $2 SIM and they would transfer credit but that would take 5-7days..

AVOID!!!!! its basically a scam at this stage

  • +3

Based on the neg comments, it's quite interesting to me that Optus can be this dodgy and get away with it.

    • +1

Indeed, raised issue with mods, interesting to see what they have to say. Providing a faulty product, not fixing the issue nor offering a refund appear like continuos fruadulent conduct of merchant.

  • +3

This is a good scam from optus. I'm guessing they have thousands of faulty sims. Instead of testing themselves to see which ones are faulty they get us to pay $5 to test for them. I suggest everyone log onto to TIO website and report it.

  • +2

I fully expect Optus to do the ethically correct thing by offering an honest explanation, a sincere apology and a full refund…nah just kidding.

  • +2

I have about 20 $10 sims left to activate. Half the time it works. The other half the time I want to tear my hair out. They don't even care about TIO complaints. None of the telcos seem to anymore.

    • +2

TIO recoup all investigation costs from Optus. I lodged a case to the TIO in the Optus store using their own computer as the girl decided to serve another customer midway through dealing with me (too hard basket). I left the claim details open on her screen. TIO have accepted the claim and following up.

      • +2

Ending a couple of months ago it took Telstra 3 weeks to activate 4 of my mobile phone sims. Even the TIO claim didn't speed things up. And after 3 weeks I was simply told that as the sims were activated they considered the matter closed. I wasted a good 3 hours. I don't know what it cost Telstra, but no one indicated they gave a damn.

  • +1

I'm still in battle to get my refund, after lodged a complain with TIO, someone from customer relation told me to buy $2 sim then he can transfer credit to new account. But when I have new sim ready, credit transfer never proceeds.

  • If you have a dodgy SIM, buy a $2 one (or get optus to send a free $2) then go on Optus Chat and they will transfer the $30 over to the new $2 straight away (well it might take 20mins!!).
    Ive done that several times.

It's a nightmare trying to port over from Amaysim. You need to call the prepaid team personally to port your number over since your email confirmation does not guarantee that your number will be ported over. I was transfered from the sales team to another staff and until the fifth person who took up the call did they advise that they will be generating a CID (wtf is that) before they will do my porting - that is 5 days after I received an email confirmation that my number will be ported over within 24 hours. Stupid system.
