Are Expensive Brand Sheets Worth It?

At somewhere like Big W, you can get 1000+ thread count cotton sheets for under $100. For the same price or more, Sheridan 300 thread count sheets are available at Myer. 500 or 1000 count Sheridans are $350-700.

We normally buy the former, they tend to last 3 or so years with weekly washing/drying.

Will I get more comfort and durability from a more expensive brand or is linen linen?

I have a 1200TC Sheridan Egyptian cotton set that was like $300. I also have 2 sets of 'ye sik $30 1000tc sheets from catch of the day shit ye'-sheets and I find that they are much softer. The Sheridan one hasnt worn in so its not actually all that soft.

So in answer to your question, no.
Just make sure they're cotton and you'll be fine.

If you have a Poll with only one option, you probably won't be able to tell the difference between Sheridan and Reject Shop.

  • I'm happy with 1000TC+ sheets from Target. As long as cotton then you're good. But yes they do make a difference vs normal 200/300TC sheets.

Avoid any of those 'hybrid' blends which claim higher TC's but aren't soft, and if you can try to buy in store so you can feel it (vs online).

Target brand sheets are definitely comparable to the top brands. Big W cheap sheets are cheap sheets

  • +1

agree…if you buy at least 1000TC cotton sheets you will be happy…I always am :)

Thread count is a scam metric, obviously. You can have dreadful polycotton sheets with 1200TC.
Whether expensive sheets are worth it depends on your preference. I dislike super high thread count sheets that are 'shiny' they are so dense and cling to you. I prefer the crisp linen feel of what used to be called hotel style sheets. These cost more than 1000+TC, but is worth it to me, and they last years.

Thread count is such a nothing scale of sheet quality. Most companies will use a thread with multiple ply, and claim a higher thread count.

I get so frustrated when people tell me their 1200 thread count sheets from Target are better than 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets.

There's a reason why Egyptian cotton are over $400 a set, and the Target ones, give you change from a $50 note.

When it comes to bedsheets, you need to feel the sheets before purchasing. Sheridan make fantastic bang for buck sheets. I have some gorgeous satin sheets that are so soft on the skin, it's mildly arousing.

    All the best :)

    • Agree re Quality.

I bought Actil sheets for $400 on sale and they lasted almost 10 years rotating week on / week off with other sheets that didn't last anywhere near that long. They were the most beautiful sheets to sleep in even until the end when they were starting to get faded and a bit see through.

Cheap high thread count sheets can often be heavy and almost canvas-like. There is nothing luxurious about that.

Quality over thread count. If you're not in a hurry, wait for the boxing day sale - there will be 50% off at places like Myer and you can treat yo' self.

      • so they really only lasted 5 years, seeing half the time you didnt use them.

agree with you about - "Cheap high thread count sheets can often be heavy and almost canvas-like". They are very hot in summer too.

        • Well, if you want to be picky, 14,600 hours, assuming 8 hrs a night for 5 years, or 608 days of continuous use.

I'm actually more impressed by the sheets now I think about that, plus the fact they were washed probably 300 hundred times in the same period.

Totally agreeing with you about the BS that is thread count. And I'm with @mskeggs regarding the feel of hotel style sheets.

You definitely have to feel the sheets before purchasing.

OTOH, I have had luck with getting sheets I ABSOFREAKINGLY LOVE for just $80-90. I have also had disappointing results with $60-70 purchased online sheets. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's been a bit of a crap shoot for us, but that I'm not willing to tar all cheap sheets with the same brush.

Expensive sheets are nice as long as you don't have a partner ripping holes in them because they refuses to cut their toenails

    • +9

      Simple, replace your partner :)

Thanks, I'll stay tuned to ozbargain and wait for a good deal on one

    • get partner drunk, cut their toenails for them. Problem solved.

I get these 500TC sheets from Sheridan Outlet online. Feel very comfy to me, durable and absolutely no pilling of the cotton either.

    https://www.sheridanoutlet.com.au/sheridan-500tc-sateen-shee…

Higher thread count sheets also available there as well, generally a lot cheaper than Myer or DJs even on Boxing Day sales. Online outlet is also on cashrewards.

    • Yes the Sheridan Outlet is well worth considering. I haven't noticed the expensive sheets to be more durable (possibly the opposite). But they do feel a lot better, it wouldn't surprise me if you got a better night's sleep.

  • I find Sheridan quality and feel just isn't what it used to be.. I too am constantly searching for the hotel style crisp linen sheets I seem to remember from my childhood. it seemed they felt cool even on the hottest summer night. I haven't found any yet! hate the sateen shiny feel too. what brands are good?

If you are after linen sheets instead of cotton, then I can recommend Linen Shed. I think the coupon code ls10 should still be active. I've bought a couple of fitted sheets and quilt covers from them and I'm very happy with the products and service. The beauty of buying from LS is that you can customise your order (e.g. colour and style) and then they make the product to your specifications. Prices are obviously more expensive than cotton, but for linen, I haven't seen cheaper. I haven't tried any other linen brands as the prices scare me a bit :-)

For pillow cases, I recommend silk, although you're paying at least $50 for a good one. I can point you to a couple of the ones I bought if you're interested. A more budget-friendly alternative is a bamboo pillow case from Ettitude. Note: I haven't tried a linen pillow case.

  • I love good quality sheets and doona covers. I generally buy 100% cotton, never go for one of the blends. However, I've bought a couple of bamboo sheets and they seem to have a good feel to them, might be worth a checkout. You need to be able to touch the sheets before you buy them so you can checkout how the feel. I've started washing mine on the delicate cycle to save wear and tear. In summer I put a sheet over my leather couch to make it more comfortable, in winter it is usually a blanket.

  • Adair's "world's softest sheets" is my recommendation.

Visit an outlet centre or use someone's Adair's membership code from the forums.

Not the thick hotel style you might be looking for, but honestly softer than anything I have found anywhere else, incl Sheridan.

    Bamboo Adair's also worthwhile.
