Saw this deal in Dicksmith for S8 for 829? Is it worth to buy with Dicksmith or better to wait ?

There were better deals for local stock

    • Thanks, but deal expired. Anything available? Interested in getting AU stock

    • Did not realise that Dicksmith is grey import, I thought its AU stock?

      • Nope - as shown on their product page

        https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/direct-import/

        • They do and it's Australian warranty. Read down a bit more.

Do direct import products come with a warranty?
Of course! All direct import products are backed by a 1 Year Standard Care Warranty for total shopping confidence and peace of mind.

There's also the choice to buy extended warranty, 3 or 5 years.

Their terms are outlined on their warranty page.

        • @fossilfuel: thanks - the warranty states as 1 year - but any other place S8 comes with standard 2 year by the manufacturer - is that different with Dick Smith ?

Also any experience on repairs - should i then send it to Hongkong or some other location.. sounds bit not straightforward…any experience ?

@catchganu: Manufacturer warranty is different to Australian warranty.

Manufacturer: If it breaks, it's your responsibility to contact the manufacturer who will determine whether it's covered by their warranty or not. In your case, you'll need to contact Samsung not Kogan. This warranty will be good for repairs and replacements (?) but not refunds. If you buy grey import i.e outside of Australia, high chance that it might not be honoured. Even if it's honoured, you may need to pay shipping charges to send it whereever they specify be it Korea or Hong Kong for example.

Australian: Covers defects for at least 1 year (sometimes more for more expensive electronics). You can return to the store with your receipt and they'll determine whether it's covered by warranty or not. Advantage is staff will either replace it, repair it or give you a refund so long as your have your receipt and original package. If there's no physical store, normally the seller will provide a shipping address and cover the costs.

In my opinion, ALWAYS buy Australian stock if it's a valuable phone. Research the phone and see if it has any known/common problems. Buy extended warranty if it does. Valuable in my opinion is more than $400. If you buy grey import and say in 6 months time, it dies on you, it's not the sellers responsibility to cover you, you'll need to contact the manufacturer yourself.

Since it's quite an expensive purchase, I'd save the headache and spend a bit more to get Australian stock.

        • @fossilfuel: awesome…wow made it so clear. Thanks a ton.

So my understanding is Dick Smith does provide Australian warranty … so is that considered as local stock? Or I am missing the point.

        • @catchganu: I believe Dick Smith is offering Australian warranty. Best call or email them to confirm.

        • From Kogan's warranty page

"While the return process may take up to 30 days, excluding transit times…"

So if you can go 30+ days without a phone, go for it. Personally I'd be buying from a local store that can get repairs through the local Samsung warranty.

    • The rating doesn't seem too good for both suppliers but price definitely the lowest I have seen….

  • I thought Dick Smith no longer existed?

Kogan bought the name rights and operate it now

See here, same question but for Kogan listing instead of Dick Smith listing.

$849.60 for AU stock still available from that My Mobile deal.

  • Given my latest experiences with Samsung service centres, not worth it. They are giving me the run around (repeated visits to the service centre, phone calls that bounce from person to person with no resolution, no communication, two weeks of an unworkable phone with no resolution in sight). I like the Samsung technology, but Apple wins for service.
