  • I purchased it from qd_au on eBay with a 10% off voucher.

Seller has good reviews (both on here and eBay), it arrived on the day they said it would and its a great phone, no regrets at all

    • How are you finding the phone? I am thinking of switching to it from the dying iPhone 6 Plus.

      • Honestly im loving it, came from a lagging nexus 5x and it beats it in every aspect for me (except camera - on par/ better in some aspects, worse in others)
Looks and feels great, really fast with no lag, speakers are surprisingly loud, love the optical zoom.
Havnt charged it since 10am and its currently sitting on 29%, ive been playing the last day on earth all day, with occasional facebook / snapchat updates

        • Ah that sounds really good. I'm a bit hesitant about switching to Android but I'm also sick of paying $$$$ for an iPhone. Hoping there will be a deal with the Mi A1 soon! I am liking the appeal of stock android. Any good tips for switching over from iOS? Thanks

        • @iamnotintheuk: I dont blame you! I cant see myself spending over $400 for another phone again.
Hmm im probably not the best person to ask since i havnt had an IOS device since my ipod touch 4 haha but if you play around with it for a few hours you should pick it up pretty quickly, all my family members (except my mum) have swapped to android and they love it

        • @shapers: Ahh all good. Maybe I'll play around with the Pixel 2, i think that one has stock android. :)

        • @shapers: Hi again, any recommendations for a 64 GB micro sd card?

    • by the way, what was this 10% off voucher for?

      • The 10% off came from a random ebay targeted promotion :)

    • Does it have NFC? I assume it won't have B28 network.. does it affect you?

I personally like the phone though I wouldn't mind a slightly smaller screen size. Not a great fan of 'phablet'.

  • Slightly cheaper here but I am not sure if I would trust the seller. I did message them and they did say it has a 12 months warranty.

  • These guys are also an option:

I've not ordered from them myself (HK Goldway), but I wouldn't hesitate to if they had what I wanted at a good price.

  • Serious question why this over some cheaper more powerful competitors like le eco, LG and Motorola to name a few.

    • can you list of some the competitions? I don't know much about other ones

      • In this spec range.

        4gb ram
        Snapdragon 625
        5.5"
        1920 X 1080
        Micro SD Slot
        3080mAh
        165g

Here is an example of some close competitors and not so close competitors.

You can refine it and increase the price a bit to include more models and phones as prices change a lot over time after launch dates.

I must disclaimer though a lot of my suggestions are aimed at the home gamer or home user in that I don't value some other options like headphone jacks or camera quality as much mainly pure processing and graphical power in a nice comfy sized fit. Essentially I like phones with a cheap power house feel aimed for gamers or power users but that's not to say I don't like other phone qualities because trust me I do I just value other things more usually stuff the majority does not really like as much.

Most people still see their phone as their technological side kick where as I have focus shifted it to being my main driver so I like maximising the performance specs for minimal budget.

But some examples I would consider would be the LeEco Le Max 2 and LeEco Le Max 2 Pro for less than $300 around the $230-250 mark.

Better specs but maybe some problems issues with Over The Air updates and such but otherwise I never understood why this phone was never praised as much.. yes it's LeEco and some may not life that but brand favourites aside it has a snapdragon 820, a 1440p screen, 4gb ram, 5.7" size.

It is a powerhouse for its price however it does have its caveats like no micro sd slot or 3.5mm headphone jack which is kind of a bummer but for everything else it kills. Very good for the budget conscious imho.

The other phone I would suggest would be the Motorola Motorola G5 Plus for around $300 which also gets a lot of posts here on Ozbargain more in line with the Xiaomi Mi A1 spec wise and feature wise just a little bit smaller but less international version hassle imho but anyways xiaomi is getting better with that each year.

Again check out that website I linked you as it pretty much covers all the phones released everywhere internationally and details them pretty heavily.

Also I'm not sure of your preferences or if you are just interested in hearing me ramble which then is ok :)

Last one I would say because it sticks out would be the Xiaomi Mi Max 1 which is just an oversized smartphone with slightly beefed up specs across the board.. super large 6.4" 1920 X 1080 screen, 4gb ram, snapdragon 650, 4850mAn battery yep it's huge.. I nearly got this phone but the greedy gamer inside me opted for a larger tablet because I wanted to see if I would like the 8.4" form factor and better SoC.. disclaimer I do and don't.. I think something above 7" maybe between 7.4" would fit my hand better or maybe even 7.8" but 8.4" is definitely still a bit too big in that it still gives me hand cramps and is difficult to hold in games that use it as a handheld so I at least have that learning experience.

Ultimately buying a new device can be a guessing game and is very dependent on your specific preferences.

If you just need a basic phone usually xiaomi wins but there are other under the radar competitors out there. Just gotta watch those deals as ultimately at the end of the day price is everything.

        • Hi

Thank you for your detailed answer. The website is also very useful. I barely play any games at all on my phone and I mainly use it for Podcast, messaging, browsing the web/youtube and the occasional photos and video. So I basically do not need a heavy performance phone, just as long as it is not laggy for what I use it for. Stock android is a big plus since I like the minialism. My friend has the Mi Max 2 and it looks and feel great except for its huge size.

I finally got the eBay 10% deal today and decided to buy the Xiaomi Mi A1 this afternoon. Hopefully I get it by Friday.
This should pair nicely with the Google Home Mini deal from Woolies!

        • @iamnotintheuk: nice yeah everybody has different needs.. for mine those options above are what I would be aiming for but yeah for your needs a Xiaomi A1 should be more than enough.. nice hope the google mini deal works out for you I haven't looked into it yet but yeah home automation and voice control stuff is getting pretty cool these days.

All the best and good luck.
