Debit/credit card refund timeline?

I paid a deposit for some baby furniture from a mom and pop small time baby shop. Initially the owner told me the furniture would be in in 2 weeks.
On Tuesday I get a call saying it actually won’t be in till after the baby arrives. Well that’s a big dealbreaker naturally so I say to cancel the order and that I would like a refund. The owner is hesitant but finally obliges. He get my cc details over the phone and I can hear him punching details into eftpos machine. He then sends a picture of the receipt and it looks legit.

Here’s the crux of the issue I suppose, it’s been 48 hours and I have not seen the refund in my bank account.
I’ve looked at both receipts, from when I paid and when I got the refund and the big difference is that I paid on debit card out of my savings account but the refund says visa credit card. The card numbers where visible seem to match so that’s ok.

Does anyone have any experience with refund timelines? I was lead to believe it would take 2 days max. Getting a bit worried as some Facebook reviews (learned after the fact) claim the shop owner is a bit dodgy.
Thanks for your replies!

I returned an item to Coles last week and money was refunded into my Mastercard in around 3 days.

    • Ok so it can take a few days? Thanks man. I am just scared cause the shop had some really bad reviews with respect to refunds in particular.

Do you know anything about initiating chargebacks? Does it work if one paid using a Visa Debit Card savings account?

        Ask your bank.

Chargebacks would be covered by VISA, so I believe you are safe.

As far as the difference, because they manually typed your card number in, rather than inserting the card, the machine has probably just defaulted to credit.

ah good to know. I returned one yesterday and it's been 27 hours and starting getting nervous.

      • Update: Checked this morning, still no refund, called the merchant, he swore that he had already done it, checked again 5 mins later and lo and behold it was there. Coincidence? Perhaps.

I was worried as well when it happened to me but was told by the bank it's normal to take a few days. https://www.finder.com.au/what-happens-when-you-get-a-credit…

  • As far as I am concerned all refunds should appear in your account between 3-5 working days. Depending on who does the refund, amount, third party, bla bla bla

  • Pls check with your bank, once the payment has been processed the funds will flow into your bank account to which your card is linked.

Now it all depends on how the remitting bank and your bank communicate, I have had issues where funds showed up overnight once refund was processed that was with Ikea they had Eftpos service provider as Westpac and I was with Westpac.

Same situation, refund was processed by a small local business had to wait for 7 business days for funds to show up and yes calling my back and trying to find out whether funds have flown in did help.

You will have to be a bit paitent in this situation if it's been more than 24 hours and funds haven't shown up.

Out of context but I am tempted to ask this, when the business asked you for your card number to process refund you didn't give out CCV number of your card, did you?!
