Help Me and My Narrow Wrists Find My Next Watch!

I'm a woman with small wrists. I like watches, particularly men's watches. I would like to add to my collection!

What I'm after (I'm making this list as extensive as possible to help narrow choices):

  • round dial that is no bigger than 38mm… Anything bigger tends to look silly, and disproportionate on me
  • sapphire crystal
  • dressy with metal strap
  • not automatic
  • low prices - say no more than $300? Can do more, just prefer not to. The bigger the bargain the better!
  • brands with a horological respectability/history, I don't like Daniel Wellington and Michael Kors type brands. I already have two Citizen Eco-drives and a seiko automatic, would prefer to branch out to other brands
  • clean and simple dial/strap. I hate goofy fonts/numbers/markers and prefer subtle interesting/special details rather than anything too loud or flashy or Blingy
  • black/navy/rose gold/silver/grey/white … HATE yellow gold, brown and red on me
  • not fussed about water rating
  • happy to buy online or in store

  • would you entertain second hand watches, like a classic Omega or similar?

    • Yep, don't mind second hand, especially if it comes with a special story! But I assume that omega watches tend to be automatic watches?

      • +1

        Both.

There are some stunning Omega second hand watches around.

        Easy first step, search eBay

        To me this is delicious
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OMEGA-DE-VILLE-MANUAL-WINDING-BL…

BUT BE AWARE THERE ARE MANY FAKES AROUND

You'll have to do some research, but it's easy to avoid fakes if you do some basic homework.

        • Thanks, agree that's a really nice watch, and omega is one of those brands I feel a personal connection to (mum loves omega watches, but somehow I don't know what happened to them now..)

I'll do my homework, would hate to end up with a fake. I assume that there are guides out there, will scope them out

Haha, I'm a guy after a watch with almost the same criteria (with the addition that the watch must NOT be battery powered).

I'm thinking of a Citizen Eco-Drive or Seiko Kinetic/Solar and quite like the Stiletto line of ultra thin Eco-drives.
    http://www.dutyfreeislandshop.com/citizen-stilleto-watches?g…

Only problem is that they don't look like they have lume (and generally don't have second hands or date functions either).

Keen to hear ppl's thoughts if anyone has one of these (haven't found any reviews anywhere).

Btw, i assume you realise the Tissot's are all automatic?

    • Cool! I have the all black stiletto watch (http://www.dutyfreeislandshop.com/citizen-ar3015-61e-ar3015-…), I love it. still looks brand new and it's very low maintenance. Yes, no lume, and at times I feel like an idiot with my all black watch (can't read the time in the dark) but the heart wants what the heart wants. It's a super classy, good looking watch, I say go get it!

Yes, I do know that the watches I linked to above don't exactly fit my listed requirements, as some of them are automatic, but wanted to give people an idea of the look of watches I like. I really like the look of the tissot watches, wish they were battery powered instead..

      • that's great to hear! can i ask is it hard to read? how durable is the watch - just conscious that they are very thin so not sure if it trades off build quality and durability :)

i quite like the silver version http://www.dutyfreeislandshop.com/citizen-ar3010-65e-ar3016-…
and am also considering this, which is slightly bigger and more traditional looking:
        http://www.dutyfreeislandshop.com/citizen-ar1130-81h-eco-dri…

if you don't mind another Eco-drive, the leather strap ones look like a steal at 150-180 AUD :)
        e.g. http://www.dutyfreeislandshop.com/citizen-bm6750-08a-eco-dri…

        • I don't find it hard to read in normal conditions, and the one you linked to has contrasting hands, whereas mine is all black so if anything the one you linked to should be easier to read.

it's super durable, I've had it for several years and even I'm surprised how well the black coating has held up. It's definitely a quality watch, and it has a nice weight despite being thin. The silver version is nice, and personally I prefer it over the other one you linked to which to me seems not as sleek and I'm also not a fan of the band.

        • @kboomkinesis:
thanks - xmas gift to myself sorted ;)
good luck with your search. btw, that omega looks fab!

    • It think it just gets away with it! This is really nice, thanks. Have you had experience with this brand of watches or seem them in person? The only thing that slightly bugs me is the engraving of the brand on the right side of the watch, but if it's not too conspicuous in person I might go for it!

      • The company was formed by two grandsons of Raymond Weil. They have no Australian stockists. In my opinion YouTube shows the brand engraving is quite a nice feature.

        • Thanks, always appreciate your input on watches!

Hands on with the 88 Rue Du Rhone 87WA120013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tstVaWGxrmc

  • +1

You could always find a metal strap for this …
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NWT-Ladies-88-Rue-du-Rhone-Swiss…

    • Thanks, excellent picks as this is nice too, but it looks like it also has the side engraving https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4Cbh5BMHjn8

With swapping the strap out for a metal one, is it just a matter of ensuring the same lug width? I've only ever swapped leather for leather myself..

      • +1

Yes, it is about lug width. Swapping that one would be easy.

  • A nice Bell&Ross BR123 would look good.

Edit , sorry missed the third word, I was thinking men's watch.

  • -1

    aliexpress.

    • Thanks. If I get this I'd change the strap. It's a good price for a tissot

  • +1

Sector watches are a bit more sporty, but you might find something you like http://www.sectornolimits.com/shop/ss_en/watches.html
Not sure about shipping to Australia though, unless you buy on ebay, etc…
If you buy directly from Sector however, you have the option to request a specific length for the strap for some models.

  • Look up mondaine or Hamilton. Both would be classics which you eithe love or hate but to a collector is appealing and doesn't look too cheap

    • Thanks, I like the looks of the mondaine Helvetica and Hamilton jazz master!
