Please May I Have Some Help Regarding eBay Purchase USD $7,500

Hi,

I would appreciate some help finding the best way forward with a large ebay purchase, and some problems I am having.

I have committed to purchasing an item worth $7500 USD from an international seller. He has kindly offered to cancel my purchase and work out a way to help him, and I. He will help me by doing multiple ebay listing to the value of $7500 USD so I can take advantage with available coupon codes to allow me to get a discount from ebay (i.e P5OZZIe, or PERK10).

In return I offered to not pay by Paypal (if I didn't have to; i.e if it wasn't a stipulation in order to get the ebay discount).

I would really appreciate some help.. Apologies I can't work it out myself I just am juggling so many balls ATM but would be super appreciative if you could suggest a way forward to get most discount..

Don't pay without paypal, especially overseas

to get the discount, you need to pay by paypal.

  • Hi PissLUR,

So I do need to use Paypal to get discount for P5OZZIE? If that is the case thank you I wasn't 100% sure.

Initially I paid the full $7500 using paypal but the seller refunded (as the seller fees killed him). It was really difficult to pay by paypal as security issues kept getting flagged and the transaction wouldn't go through… I wonder now if paypal will even let me pay again as the issue was the seller account was a bit tanished (probably because he keeps refunding!) Nevertheless I trust the seller.

    • Discount codes only work through PayPal, since eBay is their parent company.

PayPal, since eBay is their parent company.

This is no longer the case. PayPal has been trading as a separate legal entity since mid 2015.

        • Oh ok, thanks

      Yes you do.

It doesn't matter about buying in one transaction or one-hundred as it's all percentile-based discounts.

Remember that PayPal fees from another country is higher than local, which is something the seller forgot about (I presume) and wanted to avoid.
They also wanted you to cancel because sellers are slugged with the Final Value Fee regardless if payment's received or not - by cancelling a sale would mean said fees would be refunded.

    • ok I'll be first,

what is it that you bought for 7.5K ?

      if thats ok.

It is a medical device, sencond-hand, which retails for a far greater amount here in Australia.

So the seller listed a product on eBay with Paypal as an available payment option, and when you then paid using Paypal he complained about fees being too high? That doesn't sound right to me. I would be very cautious about being ripped off. What are you buying which is so expensive? Can an alternative product be purchased in Australia?

    • Seller fees are much higher for international tranalaxtions, as well as you can’t sell on EBay without having PayPal as a payment method.

Agree with all the posts ab0ve. The discount only applies via PayPal…

and your protection gos out the window if you do anything but PayPal.

OP, this can only end in tears. Either pay by PayPal (tell the seller you will pay 3% on top to cover costs) or shop elsewhere.

  • You are aware that you will be up for GST/Customs Duty when the product comes here?

I am fortunate that the device I am importing (medical related) is GST exempt!

      • 1) what the heck is exempt from GST?? also, I've been looking at some medical devices as well, do you know of any regulations that prohibit importing used medical devices for commercial use?
        2) why not use Paypal? that's basically your last line of defense considering that you've split an auction which eBay won't be happy about if you call regarding a missing purchase or non-compliant seller.

Any purchase over $1k coming into Australia is charged GST

  • Thankyou all. So very much appreciated for your help, and guidance.

I had the seller split to pay $4000 so I could get 10% Discount using PERK10 - whihc was maximum $500 AUD (~380ish USD). This is no longer available as I missed the boat.

So now I will pay the $4000 and get 5% [Simply because he already relisted for me to try and get PERK10 discount]. I will also get him to relist for the remaining $3500 USD and again get the 5% discount giving me a total of $375 USD discount.

He can absorb the Paypal, and Ebay seller fees.

It is a medical device, sencond-hand, which retails for a far greater amount here in Australia.

Thankyou for helping me, and guiding me. $375USD discount is nothing to be sneezed at (p.s I have hayfever at present!).

Ozbargain is the dad I never had.

Looking forward to the "some guy on ebay ripped me off and paypal won't refund" thread…. I'll get some popcorn ready..

    • I assume, once it's here it will be tested and recertified so it's at it's specs, by the manufacturer/agent?
That will be the expensive bit.

  • Use escrow.com

OP you know about the possible 110V issue for US appliances, I take it?

Don't want to see a "bought US appliance and it started smoking when I turned it on" thread.

I'm surprised no one has suggested that this is an extremely bad idea. Splitting up an item via multiple listings is probably against eBays ToS. In the event that something goes wrong, you're going to get caught out cheating the coupon code. It sounds like an easy way for someone to scam you if they wanted to.

Do PayPal's fees even work in such a way that splitting it into two smaller payments will save the seller anything, if anything I'd have thought PayPal would lower the percentage for larger purchases.

This is like scam 101 though, not a chance I'd go through with it, but I'm glad op trusts the seller based on something amazing he didn't tell us about, let's hope you're right because judging from your post it sounds like the seller is trying to make it as confusing as possible so you don't even stand a chance of fighting back when he robs you blind and it's clearly working

  • So if I a total stranger came up to you and said I have this second hand thingy you want and am willing to sell it to you for $4k, hand over the $$$, would you?
I promise I will be right back with it!
Sounds silly doesn’t it? You just did the same thing though, handed $4k over to someone you don’t know and don’t even know where they live!🤔

  • go to paypal website and find out how much the fees are for the item then contact him and offer to pay those fees over and above the cost of the item if he will not accept that offer my thoughts would be to get the hell out of there and look for the item,be careful and do not send it via western union transfer, best of luck
