4G Wireless Internet

I've had to move house a few times and I'm not too sure if I will be settling any time soon,
My current Phone plan has 20GB Data with telstra which I smash through in 2 weeks

Instead of signing up and paying for ADSL and re connection fees I was thinking of going more 4G as its portable.. Yet I would need at least 20GB on top of my current 20
Is there any deals / suppliers that can do this that wont cost an arm and a leg?

Telstra want to charge $55 for 8gb which obviously wont cut it

  • I'm on optus $70/month 100gb speeds are a bit hit and miss though

  • I would suggest just using some of these deals (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/339722) as a stop gap.
Ive used a few myself already while sorting out NBN.

Otherwise the month to month Optus plan of 100 GB for $70/month is probably your best shot.
I find the 4G through Optus and Kogan (Vodaphone) is better than a 25/5 NBN plan.

  • I see you're based in Sydney as well.

Optus used to have the most honest coverage maps of the three providers but now they greatly overestimate their 4G reach, claiming full coverage where there's zero. Basically, after typing in your exact address, you take the "indoor voice and call" coverage (i.e. 3G) and knock off one house for an idea of how many bars you would expect to see on your phone for 3G or 4G. So if you don't have all the houses showing you're taking a large gamble. The reception can change drastically within the house on opposite sides so even then it's just an idea.

I don't know how frequently you move but I wouldn't commit to a long-term deal until you've tested the reception with Optus or Vodafone in your exact location/bedroom/home office. The opposite is also true in good Optus and Vodafone areas where you'd regret paying Telstra's prices. So maybe buy a pre-paid SIM to check first.

The long-term deals are very tempting though…

    • I should say that I’ve just moved to cairns :o

  • I use these two prepaid concurrently at work while having nightmare ADSL and waiting for NBN:
    Jeenee 70GB @ $74/m https://www.jeenee.org.au/products/data-sims/
    amaysim 70GB @ $80/28d https://www.amaysim.com.au/plans/data-plans

Caveat is, with Jeenee, you cannot replenish the 70GB if you use it up within the month, need to wait 30 days, unless you have another sim card - the sim card takes a while to arrive too…)

With amaysim, you also cannot replenish the data, but you can:
    - change the plan to 50GB once you use it up, plan will be changed immediately, then vice versa
    - stop auto-renew and suspend the data plan (stop at the end of a period if you dont want to continue)

    Tried the Optus Home/Business Wireless (4G) 100GB/200GB for $70/m
The speed is different (much much slower than standard 4G), maximum speed we are getting is 5-12/1Mbps.
    Home http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/home-wireless-broadba…
    Business http://www.optus.com.au/business/broadband-internet/home-wir…

Important to note, you need to get at least > 25/25Mbps with 4G, otherwise you are using incompatible 4G modem.

  • get the iphone x - optus plan for $149 a month with 200gb and just sell the iphone x
