AmEx Explorer up for Renewal

Hey All,

I just noticed that my Amex is up for renewal on the 16th of this month.
I have 207k points from referrals / signup bonuses.

I need to transfer these to somewhere before i cancel this card, but i'm not sure if it's actually worth keeping the card ($395 Annual Fee)
Or if there's another Amex to move to.

I previously have had a Amex Platinum Edge.

So, what should i do with my 207k points? as I'm unsure on what to do.

  • You could transfer it all into SPG points. From there you can then use it for Marriot/miles/hotel stays.

I'm also in the same dilemma with 250k points but will probably renew because it's been a pretty good card so far (Offers, travel credit)and has so far more than outweighed the annual fee for me :).

    • Yeah, to be honest thinking about keeping it aswell.

You can drop to the Essential card that has no annual fee

Yeap, and has the same Gateway reward program so points can be kept unchanged. Earn rates much worse though, as to be expected.

  • It shouldn't be hard to get some value out of the travel credit. This would offset the annual fee. Otherwise you could ring up to cancel and see what they offer. Perhaps a reduction in the annual fee or maybe some points.

I am in the same position. Will make use of the travel credit and earn quite a few points, but want to be able to get Amex bonuses when they become available (in 18 months obv).

Am considering just dumping to Velocity with the transfer bonus at the moment, as it at least gives the flexibility to transfer to Singapore as well.

    • But if you have a redemption you will make in next few years, best to switch to KFF directly no?

      • +1

If you know the redemption will be with KF, then yes I think so.

I am trying to give myself flexibility as I don't know exactly how I will use them at this stage.

        • Fair comment, also good to not start the kff timer in case.

On a side note, I'm moving my citibank points to vff instead of direct to kff, as with the bonus I earn more kff this way.

        • @starburstyellow: Are you sure you get more that way? Is the Citibank bonus 15%?

If so, by my calculations going Amex MRG to VFF to KFF if you have 100k MRG, you would get 86,250 VFF (with 15% bonus), which would get 63,889 KFF (1.35:1 conversion rate).

Going straight from Amex MRG to KFF you would get 75k KFF.

Same situation if you have Ascent points - 100k Ascent is 100k KFF, or 85,185 going through VFF.

        • @djkelly69:
Yes I'm sure. Citi conversion rate is different for VFF and KFF. Rate is:

          2.5:1 VFF
          3:1 KFF

My 20k citi therefore conversation to 9200 VFF. Convert that to KFF gets me 6814 KFF.

If I convert it directly to KFF I only get 6666 KFF.
