Multiple Questions Regarding 750ti and HP 8200 Refurb DIY

So I am thinking of buying a https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/333354

[REFURB] HP 8200 SFF Intel Core i5-2400 3.1GHz | 4GB Ram | 250GB HDD | DVD - $140 Shipped @ Aust IT Liquidator eBay

Which has

HP 8200 SFF Intel Core i5-2400 3.1GHz | 4GB Ram | 250GB HDD | DVD

Here are the Specs:
- Intel core i5-2400 3.1Ghz
- 4GB Ram
- 250GB HDD
- Win 7
- DVDRW
- Display port to extent to other monitor

And then chucking in the strongest gpu that it can handle.

I was checking some prices for GeForce GTX 1050 ($155 AUD roughly), GeForce GT 1030's ($105 AUD roughly) and GeForce GTX 750ti ($62 AUD roughly) on ebay and was wondering why some of these prices were so cheap mainly for the 750ti. Most seem to come from China and wanted to ask you guys if you knew of any dodgy things happening here otherwise I might go with this card unless I can score a cheaper deal with a 1050 or 1050ti (which is highly unlikely but black Friday is around the corner so anything is possible).

Lastly I wanted to ask if anybody has already done this what the most powerful gpu I could stick in here would be.

Basically just want to maximize this cheap budget build and put something from a gt 1030 upwards in it and game at 1080p maybe medium settings.

I figure if I grab a $60 AUD 750ti from ebay I could have a sweet budget pc for $200 AUD and maybe add a small SSD down the road and be pretty pumping for less than the cost of a ps4.

Now I know synthetic benchmarks aren't the best but they do help in distinguishing performance and price differences and according to this

http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-750-Ti-vs-Nv…

And this

http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-750-Ti-vs-Nv…

A 1050 might be worth the extra $50-100 AUD for performance sakes.

So anybody know if a 1050 will work fine in these small for factor pc's?

It will be with a i5-2400 so should be fine..

What do you guys think about this? This beats any other idea I have had in the past months.. I have a crappy 24" 720p tv I could use for now until I find something better.

Just getting sick and tired of my one trick pony android device heh.

Thanks again Ozbargain.

IMO with secondhand desktops you should always buy the best you possibly can - RAM and SSDs are very expensive secondhand so you'd be unlikely to match a better PC by upgrading a worse speced PC.

If you can you should up your budget, you'll get twice the RAM, an SSD and importantly a more power efficient CPU.

Lastly I wanted to ask if anybody has already done this what the most powerful gpu I could stick in here would be.

I have a Lenovo M92P SFF with a 240W PSU. I have a GTX 1050Ti LP and it works perfectly. The 'recommended' PSU is 300W. This PSU has 16A on the 12V rail which i've been told is better than average, so theres no guarantee that another PC with a 240W PSU would work.

I know that completely blows the budget, but this plays Crysis at FHD at 60-80FPS at max, although without a FHD monitor it might be a waste. It'll be ~$500 total, no need for any upgrades and i guarantee it will work :)

Remember that you need a low profile card. I couldnt see any GTX750 LP on ebay for the prices you mentioned - where are you looking?

    FYI the 750Ti has a 60W TDP, and the 1050Ti has 75W.

    • Are you sure the doubling is price is well worth the upgrade?

The cpu does look more efficient but only maybe a 10-15% performance upgrade.l

      8 gb ram is nice.

      Half capacity ssd is eh.

I feel like I am over paying a bit for this one tbh.

At best maybe the 4gb ram is worth an extra $50-80 AUD?

And actually I have seen some cheaper ebay deals of my rebuilt for like $110+ $10 postage AUD so your deal looks to be $100 AUD dearer for God knows what.

I am not trying to be negative just critical because I fail to see the deal here.

If it was $100 cheaper maybe but at $299 AUD seems like a no deal or expensive deal compared to my $140 AUD. I'll keep it in mind though but yeah my main question is what types of graphics cards can fit in here. If a 1050ti can fit no problem then I might hunt for that otherwise a 750ti should do.

Btw this is the cheap $63 AUD roughly 750ti I was talking about

      https://m.ebay.com.au/itm/Video-Card-With-Cooler-Fan-GTX750T…

They all seem to come from China so I am worried. I don't know if the 750ti was heavily used in bitcoin mining and these are ultimately trash cards now but they say 100% brand new yada yada so who knows.

If they are true then I might give them a go and have a decent machine after I upgrade ram and storage to 8gb and a SSD equivalent price to maybe an Xbox One S 500g.. not bad.

      • Yeah it is a lot more, the RAM might be $40, the SSD $60 but you also get the better CPU and USB3. The HP doesn't even have USB3! I guess it depends what your budget is. If you've ever used a SSD you'll never go back!!

Personally I try not to have any brand allegiances, there's lots of decent Dell SFF systems looking at too.

        • Hmm ok just trying to weigh up my options hmm. I guess the 250gb HDD is not worth much probably less than $20.

The ram is $40 the SSD is $60 although I might upgrade to 256gb minimum and try sell the other one or use as backup drive.

You reckon I could squeeze a 1060 in there? Will I start needing fans for this one?

SSD is definitely confirmed no matter what.

Tbh I don't see myself using the USB 3 for anything anything at all really but it is nice to have just in case.

Basically just trying to squeeze the best cpu and gpu in the cheapest motherboard, case and decent psu for as little price as possible. Not even sure if I will get a DVD or bluray player for installing games as I don't watch any movies atm at all strictly twitch and YouTube.

Might get a decent wireless card though for redundancy and easier and also wireless headsets etc.

        • I doubt you could make a 1060 work. You'd need a PSU with a 6/8 pin power connector. I doubt you'd get such a PSU that would fit. And it would ruin your budget. It's just not practical.

AFAIK the 1050Ti (some only) is the best card you can get that operates only on PCIe power.

        • @Presence: hmm ah ok. Might go back to then just deal hunting separate parts. Only gripe is building it. Don't want that 1 in a million chance of zapping it or putting in a ram stick or cpu the wrong way or something haha irk and completely busting up a pricey computer lol

  • Hey mate you should go the 750Ti over the 1030 for sure the 750Ti is a tad faster plus they are around the same price. I seen some reviews of the GTX750Ti average 5 fps on BF1 than the 1030.
Most important thing is to make sure the GPU will fit and run? You may have to make space even with some low profile cards depending on your PC.
If you whack out the angle grinder you could make another PSU fit and they are fairly cheap considering you need a low wattage PSU. Not necessary at all just an option.

The low profile 1050 should work okay if you go a 1050Ti that might push your max power consumption over the limit.

    • What are your thoughts of me playing case less ie open air.. Any troubles with that you reckon? It will be on carpet most likely and not many people pass by really only dust I suppose.

      • It should be okay i wouldn't leave it on the carpet maybe on a desk or at least a piece of wood? I am not one for worrying to much about static electricity but in this case it maybe an issue. When i build i feel that touching the case is enough plus you will be touching a screw driver that will ground static.

Ages ago when i built my little bros computer it had top fans and my other bro accidentally spilled water through the top lol I turned it of and dried it up and it was okay. Landed on the new GTX670 wowzer aye. Parts are a bit more hard wearing then people think!

When i was younger 15 years ago now i built my computer and had it in competitions for show so i done DIY to the case cut of parts and added supports and painted the inside and added lights. I was 15 so i only worked part time so the case was crap but i made it okay for my use. So cases can made to work. Now days every thing is modular no such things back then.

if you build your own computer its fairly easy. Every thing is straight forward and we are always here to help if you need it mate. Things like the CPU and ram only go in way you just match up the markers.

  • Stay away from that 750ti!! There's a reason it's priced so low - it only has 1GB of VRAM which will be a huge bottleneck on the card. 1G was fine back in 2010, but almost all games these days will saturate that.

    • Ah I thought there was something wrong with it.. lol damn didn't even know they made it in 1gb variant. Thanks for the heads up.. it was so cheap it made me super tempted.
