iPad stolen from my car

So basically I live in a secure building, only residents can get into the parking lot. I’d left my iPad in my glove box and someone broke into my car. Waiting on strata to see if there’s CCTV but it’s a pretty dire situation with how few cameras are in the parking lot, I’ve contacted police, looked on gumtree, eBay and Facebook marketplace. What’s next? I’ve locked myself IN the secure parking before so it’s really not something someone could break into. I’ve tried to use find my iPhone but it’s not working because my iPad won’t connect to wifi unless it’s unlocked, and I’m guessing they haven’t managed to work out the password.

I thought about leaving an old iPhone on the seat with my car unlocked and have find my iPhone turned on, to track their location. But I’m just kind of lost right now. They didn’t bother stealing the dashcam and they smoked a cigarette in my car and left the butt. Any suggestions appreciated.

This is Apple's answer to what you should do.

    • I’ve followed these steps already, thank you!

      • Best of luck getting it back. Given these things are bricked you would think people would stop stealing them. I suppose there is some idiot in a pub who doesn’t understand.

it's not that hard to break into a 'secured' residential building just wait for someone to drive out and sneak in before the gate closes / walk in behind someone into the building.

not much you can really do … unless you want to question every resident.

Similar thing happend in my arpartement underground parking, someone got in somehow and stole motorcycles, broke the windows of cars to steal things. Police were contacted, turned out the security cameras were not operational for many years. Honestly there's nothing you can do and there's nothing the police can do. Take the loss and move on. Remember, leave nothing valuable behind in your car. My relative's house were broken into and had alot of jewelry, gold, cash stolen, with couch cushins ripped out, mattresses opened all because they forgot to set the alarm code and they only left for about 1 hr (in a very wealthy suburb). So even in your home, take extra precaution. Be happy that it's only an ipad and not hundreds thousand dollars worth of valuables or your life taken. take care

  • Well I mean you sound fairly distraught.. You should never own something (without having insurance on it) that you cannot afford to throw off a cliff and easily buy another one.

I'd say that the police have bigger issues to attend to and that you won't get it back. It does suck. I would also be quite devastated if this happened to me.

Unless they drive into the carpark in a vehicle or they have a high school leavers jacket on you're basically never going to find out who stole it.

    • As a student I really can’t afford to replace anything I own, I’m put out for a week when a pair of jeans break honestly haha. it is insured though but I’d really rather not deal with the hassle of replacing it, my policy only covers $500 of stolen goods anyway. Strata let me know there was a break in and they have CCTV footage but the guy looks pretty generic unfortunately. Think I’m just going to have to deal with it.

You've learned a valuable life lesson. Nothing stored in a car is safe. Even in a glove box.

Analyse the DNA from the cigarette butt and cross-reference the results with the police database. Once identity is discovered, we can begin phase 2 of your plan.

      phase 2?
      bikies?

First, you brag about how easy it is to break into a 'secured' residential building and now you're asking questions about phase 2. Looks like someone is getting nervous.
