    anyone still use these things?

Yes, sometimes. A dedicated navigator with a slightly larger screen that shows you the speed limit where you are does have some advantages.

      • Waze shows you the current speeds.

  • Don't buy TomTom, their mounts are notorious for failing after an Australian summer. Their support for their products is abysmal at best. Most of their GPS products feel like unfinished R& D products that they've shoved out the door to recover money.

I agree the mounts are dodgy but the gps itself is fine and I don’t have an issue with the maps. It takes take a bit of time to locate satellites and calculate routes. What do people recommend for offline map software for iPhones? map.me was what we used last time and it was OK for walking but pretty unhelpful in the car. I find the Tom Tom interface better. Also my phone is my camera so there can be a clash of usage.

    • I've been using this gps for almost one year, the mount only fell once, most of the time it sticks well. One thing I don't like is the wifi connectiviry, it drops off randomly and can not scan available networks well. Another thing bothers me a lot is the start time of this device is too long, almost takes 30 seconds

      Bit of silicone fixes that.

They [T/T] screw you over with "lifetime" maps, a total scam, ACCC should investigate this fraud

      Care to elaborate?

        http://tomtom.com/lifetime
The 'lifetime' is defined by TomTom and consumers have no idea the actual 'life' of the product when they make the purchase.
They can declare one product obsolete anytime they like and they will stop the update even the device still working.

haha, I thought lifetime means my lifetime, at least Tomtom's life time, apparently I was wrong lol

I bought this device a few months ago from Harvey Norman for $250.
Only reason I got it is because my partner is on her P's otherwise I would just continue to use my phone.
Fairly happy with it. The Bluetooth feature is nice so I can take calls directly from the unit.
It pairs with your phone to pickup live traffic info but the map/speed camera updates seem to only work if it's connected to a Wifi Connection (i.e. take it out of the car and pickup your home Wifi)
Any questions about it, feel free to ask.

I have the older model which has been fantastic. Have taken it with us travelling through Europe - World Maps option still working fine after 3 years.
The older model had a magnetic mount which means that I can remove the unit each time we stop without removing the cradle. Putting the unit somewhere cool whilst not driving means that it doesnt overheat (which happened with some previous models we have had)
These units have a great speed alert - sound and visual - so we use it to basically avoid speeding fines.

On the negative side - TomTom company are Crap and customer service is abysmal. The suction cup on the cradle is not the best after a year or so use. Doesnt always update the traffic at times when you need it. Sometimes doesnt connect to the bluetooth without prompting.

    I have Go510.

    Good:

GPS accuracy, map detail, screen clearness, UI, phone connection for realtime traffic

    Bad:

stupid routing, especially when you go on multilayer roads.
crappy battery, always have to suck on your car battery
No synchronization with Google map so you always have to search on the Tomtom, and in many cases, the address doesn't appear in its database.
