TV choices for PS4 and Switch

Currently using a 10yo LG so any is really an upgrade, its just every time I see a TV deal the comments section make me feel I dont know crap and I will end up making the worst decision. I will mostly be using this for my PS4(not pro), Switch and USB sticks for TV shows I torrent. I narrowed the choices to

Hisense 50N7 $998
LG 49UJ654T $1098

Are these reasonable choices or are they the worst possible decisions I can be making?

USB sticks for TV shows I torrent

To start with, ditch that idea :) Install Plex on the main PC and stream directly to the PS4 App. So much nicer than your current setup (been there done that)

    • I still don't see the advantage of Plex, why not use the OP's setup?

Because with Plex, you could just have it running, have all your media on a spare hard drive attached to the PC (internal or external). Plex will constantly look for new media and update accordingly.

With OP's setup, they have to download to the hard drive, then transfer to usb, walk that to the tv, plug it in and hope the format is ok for the tv to playback.

Plex is very very pretty as well, offering movie covers, run downs on the tv shows and movies etc.

Plex doesn't care what format the movie is it, it will decode as it needs to (if need be), so your PS4 (or whatever) gets the stream it can handle. No having to worry about what format the file is in.

    • Yeah spent the last hour setting this up and its awesome, for some reason i always thought you had to upload it all to plex lol. Is there a way to make it play the subtitles as well? because i got a few animes and Borgen. Anyway thanks for this tip.

      • Yeah there's a menu button on the title screen to select them (on the App), and settings on the server to select where it grabs the subtitles from

No worries, enjoy! It's a game-changer when you're used to doing it the old way lol

Don't get Hisense - they're a budget brand and quality is hit-and-miss. Or go for it if you want to save $$$ and take the risk.

I'd personally wait for a sale on a LG, Samsung, or Sony (EXCEPT: Because Sony owns its own movie studios, a lot of formats don't play on Sony TVs as well).

    • This may have been true years ago, but these days they produce really good TVs at good prices. Not too familiar with the N7 model the OP is talking about, but just have a look at any reviews of the M7000 models from last year. The general conclusion was that they provided image quality on par with TVs twice the price, especially in terms of black levels. I own both an M7000 from last year and an LG OLED. Obviously the OLED is better, but the Hisense is still pretty decent and only cost a fraction of the price. Haven't had any problems in the year and a bit I've had it. In terms of HDR performance though, the OLED does slaughter it by a long mile.

  • Or you can buy a HDMI cable and hook up the computer to the TV.

At this stage of the year, I'd be waiting for Boxing Day sales. Previously we've seen some big TV discounts during those sales, and I have no doubt we'll see it again this year, as retailers push buyers to combo their new XB1X or PS4 Pro with a new 4K TV, which will push down prices on all TVs, 4K or not.

Either of those TVs would serve you well at that price point.

The firmware on the LG is much better than the firmware on the Hisense, but in terms of image quality, the Hisense is really impressive with great black levels, whereas the LG is more greyish. Do note that the LG firmware, unless it's changed recently, doesn't allow you to play videos from a network drive, which is really annoying.

My suggestions is to look at reviews for both and decide what you want to do… but as far as entry level goes, they aren't bad choices. The one thing I will call out though is that you won't get good HDR performance at this price point. With HDR you get what you pay for, so if you're upgrading for the HDR, I would highly recommend spending more and picking up one of Samsung's higher end LCDs, or if you can afford it, one of LGs OLEDs.

  • Personally if you just need 4k and not HDR I would jump on some of the current cheap ones atm

There is a 50" Viano for like $349
