Advice on a good Mens Electric Shaver

I'm looking to buy my husband a new electric shaver and I have no idea where to start or how much I'll need to spend. Can anyone recommend a good one or know of a current bargain? Any advice appreciated thanks.

  • I bought one off aliexpress for $15 2 years ago. Has worked great. I previously had a philips shaver which cost $150+. The aliexpress one does the same job for a lot less.

they are no longer available, but if i were to need another one then I'd go for this this one which will be US$10 delivered tomorrow lunch time due to the 11/11 sale - linky

personally owned a phillips rq1051, found it crap and not enjoyable. Maybe he might enjoy de shaving instead. I own a lot of safety razors and always go back to my muhle r41, the newer model.

    • No as it's $9.95 and no click and collect, it's delivery only at $9.95 so more expensive then the aliexpress one linked above.

      • Wait for Good Guys then, hope they would restock this again.

Find out what your husband wants in a shaver and google for reviews. The other thing to look into is how hard it is to clean the shaver. My other half got a pretty high end one that has a self clean stand. It means he just plugs it in, pushes the button and it self cleans. Saves all the pulling apart and manual cleaning he had to do previously. Not a cheap option, as you need the cleaning fluid as well, but the shaver is cleaned properly and less mucking around.

I used a double edged razor. Lasts a lifetime and super easy to clean. None of this fancy electric stuff the kids use these days as they drink their Coca Cola and charge their eneloops

  • I have both Braun and Philips.

Braun (Made in Germany) for the facial hair as it works better than the Philips - More smoother on the face.
Philips (Made in Netherlands) for underneath the chin as it works better than the Braun - Better for thick hairs.

I am very happy with both however the cost is not cheap. (~$1000)
There are additional costs over time, foil, cleaning fluid etc which is not cheap.

Sometimes it is good to shell out a little more than to buy rubbish.

I understand it is a little over the top to have two however I'd rather spend $1000 on myself than at the pokies :-)

    Cheers

    • This guy shaves.

      • LOL Yep … btw I am not that hairy!

  • I have a Panasonic ES-LV65. Personally I wanted something cordless, and one that I could use in the shower. I also use it for my head as well as face. I always used blades before, but find the shaver does a better job on my head, and a pretty good job on my face.
They are about $250 at the shaver shop.

  • First step - find out if you need a foil one or a rotary one.

The biggest drawback of a foil one used to be that the blade were fixed - so around the edges/contours - they used to be a struggle.

Braun series 5 / 7 or 9 solves that problem. the foil is flexible and is very comfortable to use. I use a series 5 myself (over 2 years) and quite happy with the results.

    Current deal ($199 less 20% = $169) for a series 7: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Braun-Series-7-Electric-Foil-…

Cant go wrong with this one or a series 5 with a clean system ($179 less 20% = $144): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Braun-Series-5-Wet-Dry-Electr…

    • I agree with RM. I just bought a Braun Series 7 via Shaver Shop / EBay with 20% off. A great shaver.

But as per above, answering the foil versus rotary question is the first one.

    • series 5 with a clean system

Can you charge the shaver without always using the cleaning feature?

      • +1

Remove the charge cord from the clean system and plug in the shaver

        • Thanks.

One final question as I want to grab the Series 5, can you see the pop-up trimmer when using it or does the head obstruct it?

And roughly how wide is the trimmer?

        • The trimmer is at the back…does not interfere while shaving (holding the shaver) at all. The trimmer is about 1.5/2cm wide

        • @RM:

          Thanks.

I meant can you see the trimmer if you're doing sideburns, for example?

I've read a few reviews and they say you can't see what you're trimming.

        • @Scab: yeah, it does get a bit hidden behind the shaver - but at an angle you get a decent view. But again wouldn't all shavers with trimmer at the back be the same?

  • Thanks for your replies everyone. I'm totally clueless when it comes to mens shavers! I might have a look into a few of the models you've mentioned above. I'd rather not buy a cheapie and hopefully get something that will last well.

i bought this above a few months ago. it is pretty good. i would recommend it.

    • I have similar, it's really only suitable for grooming/trimming and not shaving.

  • What would you need the shaver for? Beard alone? or hair as well? Do you clean shave or leave ur beard long?

I grow my bear to 1/1.3cm and fade my hair by myself. SO I have a Philips hair clipper and it work perfect for me.

Just for his beard. There's no way on earth he'd shave his head, he has long hair below his shoulders!

      • Sorry, wasn't aware of hair details!
