[OzBargain 11th Birthday] Adelaide Meetup - 9 Dec 6PM at Adelaide Botanic Park

Update: Facebook Event Page:

  • Date: 9 December
  • Time: 6PM
  • Venue: Adelaide Botanic Park

We have tried it before but couldn't get it organised.

We have to do it now for the 11th Birthday with $500 to spend.

Ideas are well, I'd say we make it all ages as we have previously had trouble getting people to come.

2 Ideas at the moment

Picnic in the Park with Dominoes and maybe backyard cricket

X-site Gaming Mount Barker

Any suggestions appreciated.

We have $500 to spend.

That can buy us

100 Pizzas from dominoes if we can organise some sort of deal.

If we could get 25 people that would be ideal.

You'll probably need to wear pants 😊

      • +1

then you will miss the fun part

        • Oh, I get it…so you'll turn up pantless, we'll point and stare, then you'll have faced your fear of exposing your ass, you'll relax, we'll talk about you forever, everybody wins.
Cool day out for Adelaide OzBs
          (That's just way too visual!).
Is that what you meant? :)

….and @Scab,if you're eavesdropping here, the answer is no :)

  • Merged from OzBargain Party Adelaide Venue Poll

    Hi,

Before I organise anything I did want to do a poll just in case you do not like my idea.

Here are the options I've left it to 3 as these are my two favourites and are semi central located with some form of entertainment involved.

    Option 1

    Lawn Bowls
Up to 3 hours of Lawn Bowls with Music in Payneham plus 2 drinks and 1 sausage sizzle plus around $15 extra spending money per person which could be used on $11 meals extra drinks whatever.

    As per this deal: https://www.groupon.com.au/deals/payneham-bowling-club-1

    Option 2

Catered Cocktail Party for Up to 20 ($149), 40 ($199) or 60 ($249) People at Plank Kitchen and Bar
    As per this deal: https://www.groupon.com.au/deals/plank-kitchen-and-bar-5

20 Lemon peppered squid with lime & sweet chilli dipping sauce
20 Panko crusted prawn sticks with chilli lime dressing
20 Tandoori chicken skewers with mint yoghurt dipping sauce
40 Asian vegetable spring rolls served with sweet chilli sauce
30 Selection of chicken, smoked salmon and vegetarian sushi with soy sauce
30 Mini pies and sausage rolls served with tomato sauce
20 Mini fruit skewers with honey and yoghurt dipping sauce
20 Olive and fetta frittata with onion jam

Extra spending money would depend on how many people would turn up. We roughly get $20 per person.

Lots of food but no entertainment apart from maybe music and we'd have to chat to each other or just enjoy the food. Having said that some could go to the beach afterwards or grassed areas.

    Third Option:

Dominos in City with Drinks probably Victoria Square

    Option 4

    Sugar Shack Diner
$10 for Burger Fries and Drinks Paid for by Ozbargain on Saturday or Sunday the 8th or 9th of December through the Scoopon

    https://www.scoopon.com.au/deals/75012/-10-american-style-bu…

I want to schedule for the weekend of the 1st of December so likely a Friday night if it is the first option or either Friday or Saturday for Glenelg Option.

Ozbargain T-shirts should be up for grabs if I can organise in the next few days.

    • Well done treeman!…

      Scotty said:

Not really. $500 is the cap, but my budget is around $20pp. I told treeman that if they are able to get 10 people I am happy to contribute $200 (well, they are in Adelaide after all). I need to set a cap just in case 100 people turn up to empty my band account :)

      From me
Sat (day or night) 2dec no good for me :(

    • +2

Due to the early lead of the Plank Kitchen and Bar I have contacted the venue.

Just waiting to hear a reply.

    • +2

Well so far I've Facebook Messaged Plank Bar and Kitchen a couple of days ago, heard nothing, then tried to phone them twice with the phone ringing out.

I suppose I'll try again later/tomorrow, see how I go.

    • +2

I've just got in contact with them.
It has the wrong number on the groupon page.

Manager is going to email me some further details.

    • +2

I can't believe the blue and white or red and white cafe for AB's wasn't suggested.

    • What about asking Danny at Gameroom Essentials for a deal? He's a top bloke

      • People weren't keen on travelling down Elizabeth way.

I'm not very impressed with the Glenelg venue atm, plus I don't want to turn up paying $149 (with Ozbargain money) like I'm doing some big hot shot party and then no one turns up.

This deal in Norwood is looking not a bad choice:

        https://www.scoopon.com.au/deals/75012/-10-american-style-bu…

I keep changing my mind I know! That way I only buy the amount of scoopons I need.
Then if only a certain number turn up other Scoopons can be given to others. Also Norwood is pretty central although hard to get a park for free.

        • Only thing is it would have to be Midday Saturday or Sunday. But the food looks pretty nice.

        • Hi,

          I had a look at:
          allthedeals.com.au and they had:

          https://www.groupon.com.au/deals/stamford-hotels

This is for Adelaide or Glenelg.
(and extra guests can be catered for at extra cost of $15 per person).

          Hope this is of assistance.

          • @holdenmg: I just don't want one of these deals with no one turning up. I honestly think they are too good to be true.

          • +1

            @holdenmg: Hi,

Sure I understand… I think these offers are a "loss leader" to get people in in the hope that they will return either as individuals or as groups.

Apart from the Drinks (which are not included) sometimes people also order additional (off menu).

The problem with Glenelg (or even Norwood) is that if people are already coming from the far South or the North to the City via public transport, they still aren't at the venue and they have to do the same in reverse to get home again.

I still reckon the the City is hard to beat, but of course as was said earlier it is impossible to pick somewhere that suits all.

    • Thanks for doing this treeman. Disappointing about the Glenelg venue… Would be a shame to see the meet-up fall through.

Perhaps we could set something more casual in the city as a fall-back for the more organised options? I'd prefer paying for my own food and drinks to this not going happening at all.

    • I'm going to let someone else take the reigns in regards to the organising. Can still organise it in the city for stamford or Glenelg if you can get in contact with them as that seemed the preferred option from Adelaide Ozbargainers.

I would consider organising something else but would probably prefer something different to be honest so someone else out there would be better suited to the organising.

You still have a couple of weeks left so if someone gets on quick it can still work out.

      Sorry.

      • +2

Easiest option would just be making a facebook group to backup the numbers for it and organizing pizza in a central park area.

    • +1

I vote we go to an all-you-can-eat buffet and take in turns wearing a wig to retrieve food after paying for one person.
      Flawless plan, can't go wrong.

    • I'm away this weekend :(

    • +1

      TL;DR - Adelaide Facebook Event

Going out on a limb but here we go.

Currently looking at a City meetup starting at 6pm in Botanic Park on the 9th, due to the short notice and Ashes test this coming weekend.
Moonlight Cinema will be going on in the park but there should be a decent space available still.

Hopefully we can get some sponsorship but even so, I will try to organise Domino's, soft drinks and a backyard cricket set.
There's also a good chance we can get some freebie T-Shirts if we get enough interest by the end of this week.

I will post any updates here for people that don't have Facebook (or don't want to reveal themselves).

  • Okay I've decided to put a poll up on the venue as I want as many people to be keen on it as possible.

    Pick your favourite

If it were "talk like a pirate day" you could make them walk The Plank…

      Arrrrrgh…

  • What about asking Danny at Gameroom Essentials for a deal? He's a top bloke

    • No on is keen travelling down to Craigmore.

      • 51kms, nope

I am in if its my day off.

    • Thanks for trying treeman. I can't imagine it's easy organising this kind of thing.

  • +1

Without anyone officially organising this, the chances of it falling through are higher than ever…

How do people feel about having a more casual meet-up in the city? I'm happy to organise pizza and drinks (and cricket?) if possible.

    • +1

Suggest a couple of places and then we can narrow it down and pick some dates.

      • +1

Victoria Square has been mentioned, plenty of space and can move on from there.

Exeter/The Elephant both have decent outdoor space and are the cheapest pubs I know in town.

Botanic Park would be good too, though it's obviously less central. Would be easy to get a game of cricket going there.

    • +1

Yeah I think that's the best, keep it simple.
As this is the first meetup in SA it'll be difficult to get people to come, next time we can book a venue or something.

  • +4

Just a reminder for the organiser — I can send some T-shirts to be distributed at the meetup, however you'll have to PM me ideally a week earlier so I can organise the parcel.

  • scotty is there a place to buy these tshirts?

  • "Who lives in Adelaide anyway?"

The absurdly high migration intake means everywhere in Australia is feeling the pinch ragardless of how bad the economy is. And now we get the "World's 5th most liveable city" label slapped on us to put a target on us for diversification the way Melbourne and Vancouver have been.

  • I am in for a city dinner meetup. Why not just choose a night and go to somewhere in the city for an easy dinner? Like Poke Me (https://www.pokeme.life/menu). Limit it to the first 25 people who RSVP and bingo, happy birthday! Can try to pre-order and if we have extra, get a birthday cake for desserts for everyone =)

I will be there. Sounds good. Let me know if there is anything I can do.

      • Have rsvp'd.

        Thanks

        • +2

Great! Hope we can get enough to people to actually do it though. Not sure if people are totally uninterested in this now or just not checking the page, but I really thought there'd be more than two people confirming their interest after two days…

If you are interested PLEASE LET ME KNOW SOMEHOW. Otherwise there's no T-Shirts or possibility of funding.

        • @flopsy: I'm going 120%.
I previously voted differently, but cannot change my vote, so there's 4 people that are going 120%

        • Also great! If they pull through we have 3-5 people. Hoping to get at least 10 confirmations by the end of the week.

        • @flopsy: I could ask some friends if they are interested in going, they know about Ozbargain and sometimes use it, but I don't believe any are members if that matters.

        • +2

@Wystri Warrick: The more the merrier in my eyes.

        • @flopsy: right'o I'll ask them :)

        • +1

          @flopsy:
          I'm 85% sure I can make it.
          Where abouts in Botanic Park?

        • +1

@MishyMoo: Going to scope it out in a few days when the Moonlight Cinema starts because I don't know how much they'll be using.
I believe they'll be taking up most of the west part, so somewhere on the other side.

        • @flopsy:

          How's the organisation going?

          How many certainties?

        • @treeman: About 5 so far. Should definetly happen but I hope we get more responses before hand.

        • 5 or 6 more people have voted on the poll with "probably depending on location" since choosing a location. Not sure how to count that.

        • @flopsy:
Any more than 2 is a bonus, right!? 😊😊

        • @flopsy:

Fingers crossed we can get 10 with Ozbargain funding.

Will we just get dominos delivered?

        • @treeman:
Would need a definite landmark or address for pizza delivery.
Sitting on the grass eating pizza is my idea of fun. Hopefully for others also.

Whatever we do (except for a pissup or gaming) is fine with me, personally. As I mentioned in a previous post, you won't be able to satisfy everyone's needs and wants, so just making the decision and letting people know (with a clear address) will be fine at this stage I believe.

I kinda liked the lawnbowls idea that treeman had.. Its new for most and had some structure to it. Maybe we can get together and do that another time if we like each others company.

I guess the main purpose of this meetup is to meet. 😊

        • +1

@treeman: If we can get some funding, sure. Otherwise I was going to drop about $40 into getting 6-8 pizzas and some soft drinks on the way there and keep them wrapped up warm.

        • @flopsy:

We should definitely get some funding right?

I thought it was $20 per person…or is it only that if we make it to 10 people?

        • @treeman: I don't have any specifics, obviously it's up to Scotty. I don't know what he had in mind when offering it in the first place but I can definitely understand not wanting to give it away for a casual meet without many confirmed attendees.

        • @flopsy: yup. Food & drink is on us. I will discuss that with you about funding on PM later.

        • @scotty: The people's champion has spoken.

    • +1

I will post any updates here for people that don't have Facebook (or don't want to reveal themselves).

Can I come masked? Lol :P

      • +1

If you're the only one with a mask, we'll know that you're the emperor tho.. . πŸŽπŸ‘ΉπŸ‘ΊπŸ˜·

  • Do the Facebook people know that this communication is going on here, or is there a duplicate one going on over there?

    • The "Facebook People" don't exist, unfortunately.

  • If i have no plans, im in.
There's food and free shirts involved so it'll be hard to keep me away.

    • Waiting for a better offer?

I know people like you. ;)

      • +1

What happens if I commi to this and then an event offering TWO shirts arrives!
I'll never live with the regret!

  • per Google:
    9am–7pm
    Adelaide Botanic Garden, Saturday hours

  • At 25 people, does that mean four pizzas each? I don't think I should come because I can't eat that much pizza.

    • +1

      Doggy bag?

  • +1

Pretty quiet in here for a mob that is meeting up for the first time..
Do we know where in Botanic Park yet?

    • +1

Agreed I cant see it getting over 5 but i might be wrong. My Wife is going to come now so there's an extra. Hopefully the t-shirts have arrived and Flopsy has secured the cash.

      • Just had a look at the Facebook event and 4 have confirmed and 24 maybes so maybe a likelihood of 10-15.

  • So a bunch of individuals will wander around Botanic Park around 6pm, where there is an outdoor cinema event, looking for people we don't know, amount of people unknown, one of which may or may not be wearing an orange tshirt….. We're going on a wing and a prayer here, so hoping to meet 'someone', if not all of you in a couple hours. 😊😊

    • +1

I'm here…just realised it's botanic park not the botanical gardens.lol. Heading there now..

In retrospect, meeting outside of Friends Gate bordering botanic park and the botanical gardens would have been quite apt. 😊

  • Sooo, how did it go? What was the pizza to person ratio in the end.

    • About 12 pizzas to 18 people. 9 garlic bread plus a couple of platters of cold meat.
      Plenty of soft drink.

    • It was great!
      What treeman said.
      Still full of pizza πŸ–

    Where abouts are the photos?
