How to Minimize Risk of Being Scammed When Buying Gift Voucher?

Hi guys, this may seem like a rather silly question, but wanted to ask anyway.

I will be buying a relatively high-value jb hifi gift voucher from someone (my first time). how do i minimize the risk of getting scammed?

they say it's a digital copy, and has asked me to make a bank transfer before he will e-mail through the voucher.

anything i can do to protect myself?

I'm thinking bank transfer is risky - possible offer paypal?

anything else?

cheers!

Where did you find this deal? What sort of discount?

    • FB group. $900 voucher for $750.

Your first time is always a bit rough/underwhelming.

they say it's a digital copy, and has asked me to make a bank transfer before he will e-mail through the voucher.

Both of you don't want to be scammed in this situation haha

    Why take the risk?

      Gambling addiction.

no don't do bank transfer!! how much is the discount more than the usual 6% off?

Seconded. Do not bank transfer except to beloved relatives.

I just read the OP updates, I know of many scams on Facebook groups!!

Why would they be selling it so cheap?

    • is it really that cheap?

I regularly see JB-HIFI vouchers for 7.5% through gateway rewards. $900 for $750 is a much higher discount at 16.66%. I know Coles sometimes sell the Ultimate Kids GC (includes JB-HIFI) for a much higher discount in the form of flybuys points (upto 33.33%), however you are limited to only one $30 card per flybuys household.

    ABORT ABORT ABORT

No seriously, this is classic scam material - even if the gift card IS legit, it could well have been bought using stolen CC details, etc.

    • This is correct, you’re less likely to be scammed yourself but very, very likely to be supporting upstream theft/fraud.

Someone has to be purchasing those hundreds of thousands of dollars of AUSTRALIAN iTunes cards scammed off grandmas to pay for “tax bills”.

  • Maybe you could call the seller in a JB store and hand your phone to staff and ask them to check the remaining balance.. maybe~ or similar middle man sort of thing.
Paypal + VISA is the only way to go when taking a risk, I've won VISA disputes two out of two times (PayPal refused one but VISA seems to actually consider claims).

Another thought, if you mention PayPal and they use the fees to try and talk you out of it then you can rest easy knowing it was almost definitely a scam :>

I also have a $900 JB voucher, just chuck whatever you think it's worth in my bank account dw you can trust me. wink.

If you send me the money in bitcoin, I will ensure that it is all above board.

  • Lol I'd rather pay 9% more (7% discount on JB isn't hard to find) and know I had no risk of losing my money. That me personaly

ive done this before, meet at the JB and buy something with it, then pay him

no bank deposit, no paypal, in person only or nothing

  • +4

Since it's digital, even if you've paid him, as long as he has a digital copy too, he can use it. The only safe way is to spend the gift voucher as soon as you two exchange money after checking the balance.

Get him to visit the store with you. When he purchases the item you can give him cash.

No other way is risk free.

Good idea. I suggested that to him and he has agreed!

      thanks

      User name checks out

  • don't do it!

  • Yep if you're in the same city meeting in person is the safest.

E-gift cards are dangerous. I don't like buying them from ppl because they'll always have the ability to use it after you buy.

I'm still pretty careful on OzB but I'm more trusting of frequent users. For Gumtree/FB i never take any risk for a deal. It's either on my terms or no deal. The risk is too high for a small saving.

I even get suspicious of Gumtree users who are too laid back about paying me without trying to do any due diligence lol

  • Check the balance of the gift card online.

Pay for the item in PayPal using the method that has buyer protection. Don't use the Pay family and friends it's not buyer protected.

HOWEVER because it's a stranger, emailing you a copy of the gift card would mean they still have a copy. They could have taken a photo or snapshot of the digital card even though they hand over the original.

Personally on this one I would ABORT. Go through trusted parties.

  • Abort this if haven't already. I checked my gateway rewards is 7.5% of but then again I would not risk it if I was in your situation.

  • Can you buy a gift card with a gift card?

Can you go in store, buy new gift card than pay cash?

Would that level of separation help if it was purchased with a stolen credit card?

  • The simple answer is never buy these sorts of thing, ever, unless you can meet them in store, make a purchase there and then and give them the cash.

  • I would meet the seller in person and go to JB to verify if the gift card is legit.
