Is It Safe to Consume Tinned Tuna Thrice Daily?

Am addicted to aldi tinned tuna capers varieties that I warehoused at 75c before the recent price hike to 80c. Tell me that I'm toxifying my system so I can move on. Have just warehoused tinned butter beans at 45c on clearance kogarah Woolworths.

tin cans, despite their name, sometimes aren't made out of tin, most likely aluminium. The cans are also protected on the inside with an epoxy coating, so there isn't any risk of metal contamination (unless you decide to do something silly, like heat the can on the stove top which melts the plastic lining.

The epoxy lining is made out of Bisphenol A compound — otherwise known as "BPA".
Food standards Australia states that BPA is not toxic even though most people think it is.

In any case, I think too much of anything is usually not good, and our reliance on food packaging isn't great for the environment anyway. Visit the fishmonger once in a while and buy some nice fish :)

      most people think it is.

Most people seem to be ignorant that it's been used in tinned products for their entire lives.

  • +1

Yes. There is no population on earth that suffers any ill effects from consuming fish.

    • +3

A psychological study of Scandinavian residents found that people who lived in land and ate less fish had higher levels of depression and suicide.

Certainly true for the Vikings who starved to death in the ice age. Ivory harpoons may have saved them.

    • Well, I know that pregnant women are instructed to avoid certain fish….deep sea?, because of toxins.

      • +1

Not toxins of the fish per se, but because of bio-magnification of pollutants and heavy metals in fish higher up the food chain.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biomagnification

Biomagnification, also known as bioamplification or biological magnification, is the increasing concentration of a substance, such as a toxic chemical, in the tissues of organisms at successively higher levels in a food chain.

    Thrice

is that a combination of rice twice a day?

    • +5

      Once twice thrice

      • Tridaily would be more appropriate.

    • +2

      I like rice too.

      • thrice daily

It would make sense if op is of Indian descent. Tridaily is would be more appropriate in western English speaking countries.

        • +1

How so? I just googled the word and it doesn't seem to be accepted in the bigger dictionaries. It also has ambiguous meanings "three times a day" or "every three days".

        • @ronnknee: Does Macquarie Dictionary, paper version, count as a big dictionary for you? Feel free to try others like the OED, or Merriam-Webster. It simply means three times, analogous to twice meaning two times. It's been in the language since Middle English, i.e. from the Norman Conquest to about 1500, according to OED. It has fallen in use according to Google ngram but is still accepted.

@greenpossum: Are you talking about thrice or tridaily? If you read carefully, I know what thrice means. I haven't heard of tridaily as otherwise whooah1979 suggested that it's "more appropriate".

        • -2

@ronnknee: Oh I see. Your antecedent was unclear. There are actually just as many characters in "the word" as "tridaily" so you saved nothing.

        • @greenpossum: Absolutely true.

@greenpossum: Didn't know that OzBargain was about saving keyboard strokes. It would've been clear if you have read the parent comments.

Yes. Small portions. All fine. Just eat the content and not the can ;-)

    • +3

Iron is an important part of the diet.

      • +5

Yes, but too much can make you rusty ;-)

  • +6

I suppose you risk bioaccumulation of toxins, if you really want an excuse to take it easy, but assuming you are eating other things as well, and your tuna diet will stop in weeks or months, not years, you will be fine.

    • +2

      Biomagnification*

  • +3

I would be concerned as it's tuna that has been rejected by John West

"Is It Safe to Consume Tinned Tuna Thrice Daily?"

      Reported for a Dad joke.

I heard about tony robbin's coming down with mercury poisoning thanks to his diet including tuna and swordfish.

First decent link that comes up mentions it here
    https://aydaersoy.com/are-there-toxic-heavy-metals-in-your-f…

Something about the mercury in smaller fish being passed up the food chain and accumulating in the bigger fish that we tend to consume.

I've also heard mention of people avoiding seafood after the fukushima meltdown and contaminating the sea. Waste tends to spread quite far across the worlds oceans

I think your diet is monotonous and in your place I would die of boredom. C'mon, live a little.

  • +1

THREE tins of tuna per day?? Let me know how that mercury toxicity works out for you.

  • +3

If you develop the ability to accurately identify the temperature through feel alone, then you've got mercury poisoning.

  • +4

    are you a cat?

  • Tuna is very high in protein and some other goodies, so it's obviously good for you but try and remember to have a balanced diet which is important for your mental health as well. I'd go nutso if I was eating the same thing every day.

  • Are you wanting to live longer than three score years and ten?
