Got this email this morning. Best price this for this wine was previously was $240 a dozen. Use referral code sign up of $25 below and it comes in at $90.50 per 6 pack ($108+$7.50postage -$25 sign up). $15.08 per bottle.

Not sure if I am allowed to name the brand, but you can work it out for yourself. I've seen this bottle on Ozbargain a few times, this is the 2016 vintage.

"We are delighted to have picked up good stocks of this superb super premium McLaren Vale Shiraz hot on the heels of its score of 94 from James Halliday. Here’s an extra special, ridiculously good value offer - a beast of a McLaren Vale Shiraz that retails for $70 - for just $18!

If anyone is unsure and would like to know the identity of the wine, please feel free to give them call or email 1800 649 463 or [email protected].

"We submitted the previous vintage of this wine for a corporate gifting run alongside a handful of other excellent wines including a $50/btl 95pt Cab, a Shiraz which scored 96 points from James Halliday, a $50 Barossa Shiraz and a cracking $80 Shiraz which regularly picks up big points and bling and it won, hands down. This vintage is even better… Black and blue fruits are dominant in this big, bold Shiraz which has refined oaky goodness and plentiful fine tannins. We strongly recommend a good double decant to realise the full beauty of this beast… Excellent for a special occasion with fine fare and friends, but at this price, you can probably just treat yourself to a glass mid-week with spag bol…

Retail is $420/6 btls but it's yours for just $108/6 btls. Grab two 6 packs for FREE FREIGHT.

  • Or you could just tell us the name of the wine?

I quite like the Curtis wines (one they had a couple of years ago was superb), but they're perpetually marked down at Wine Direct/Vinomofo (same wine is $17.90 at the moment) and they're simply not worth anywhere near the $70-100 they "retail" for. You've got to think of it as a 20% off sale, not a 70% off sale.

$70 is what I'd pay for a Bin 389, something by Farr, maybe even a cheap Yarra Yering red. It needs to be bloody good.

The Curtis wine is bloody good. A solid heavy hitter Shiraz that is an absolute pleasure to drink.

Check the ratings out on Vivino if you want a better description

    Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 88 reviews :)

Check out this wine. I scanned it with the @Vivino app: https://www.vivino.com/wines/141691444

    I’m buying!!!

    • Some speculation the ratings are dubious as a lot are from reviewers who have only left a single review?

      • +1

It seems to be a love it or hate it kind of wine. We are in the love it category as Big McLaren Vale Shiraz drinkers, but I can definitely see some dubious activity on vivino app concerning the curtis, and the marketing strategy of an inflated RRP leaves a bad taste for many also.

        • Thanks - I'm a bit partial to Mac Vale Shiraz as well so will give this a try. Have you tried the Kilikanoon Parable Shiraz over at CMs?

        • @Punkboy:
Yes, I have a case of the Parable 2014. We had another bottle 2 nights ago. I like it, but the nose is curious on that one, sort of an earthy 'pungent meat' but given a good decant or left a night and that goes. The 2015 Serafino McLaren Vale Shiraz (decent price at cracka with a $50 voucher), and the 2015 Pertaringa Over The Top (Also a secret at winedirect) are some of my favourites from the vale. Mrs Chonka is quite partial to the Curtis 2015, or as she calls it "The Helmet Wine". I didn't find the 2015 Curtis overly sophisticated (its not a $70 wine), but it suits our tastes/price range nicely.

Thanks - do you know of any vouchers/coupons for Winedirect?

        • @Punkboy: no voucher sorry, the referral link above will give you $25 credit though.

Well, there’s only one way to find out. Try it yourself

If you are not happy with it at $19.25 a bottle then I’ll be gobsmacked.

Brilliant wine for the price! This is way above a $20/$30 price tag. I can’t say I’d pay $70, but $30-$40 without blinking an eye.

Vote with your tastebuds. That’s how I do it.

    • Agree however when buying without tasting over the net and coming across what seems like some dodgy marketing practices it's reasonable to be suspicious and look for other opinions.

  • Totally! :)
