OzBargain Me a Vertical Garden Design!

After many months of overthinking, agonising over the cost of the project and over engineering, tonight I put the last screw in my vertical garden!

I wanted to cover my modular rainwater tank and finally came up with this

Next is the potting mix and plants.. there I am a little bit stuck.

It's Melbourne North facing but the worst of the afternoon sun is blocked by my house. Ideally I was wanting lush green foliage and I was even considering all the same type (maybe Boston fern?) not keen on succulents or herbs/veggies..some flowers but I don't want a bit floral display.

The budget for this is pretty much blown out already but I can't stop now! So I am after some ideas on what sort of potting mix is the most economical but things will actually grow in.. and then some planting ideas.. I don't mind tubestock and waiting for it to grow.. but I really need the design help.

Hope someone out there has some ideas for me?

Thanks for reading!

Did you build that yourself? Looks brilliant!

I usually just walk around the neighbourhood and see what others are growing. Gets the old imagination going.

I can also do an horizontal design, if you'd like.

I tried archway designs, couldn't do it.

Hi. I recommend grass plants like liriope or the native dianella caruella. They will not die, will cascade and will provide a bacjdrop for some feature plants. Herbs are great, esp creeping rosemary, thyme, mint. I also have succulents pigface and blue candles.

  • I once had a dream that i built a vertical garden.
it was like the one you built but i used 100mm pvc piping instead of the pots and just put in plastic separators in between to avoid cross contamination.
this way i also set up a watering system using plastic tubing from bunnings
I had a mix between flowers and herbs.
you should ask your local nursery about what grows well in your area and also start small then build and not buy it all at once.
but then again it was all a dream … .

You could try Grow Free (if you're on Facebook) are a group of suburbanites in Melb (& SA) who grow stuff and give away their surplus fruit, Vegs, flowers as well as seeds, seedlings etc. They operate by putting a 'cart' outside their house.. People Take or contribute as they want. The facebook group will have a map and/or a list on where the carts are.
If you need more help, there are also Facebook groups that discuss what and when and where to plant things.

Not diminishing the expertise of OzBargainers of course (I'd love to plant an SD card and have it grow :).
I'd really love to have a vertical garden like yours! It looks great.

      thanks so much. really appreciated.

  • Have a look here, although, first thing to do is a garden wall/vertical garden image search on Google to decide what sort of look you want to end up with, then choose the plants to suit.

  • Interested in vertical gardens myself.

Seen the tower garden which is very expensive.

Hoping someone may have come across an alternative?
