7 Eleven Coffee & Cup Sizes

I've started buying coffee from 7 Eleven lately and was wondering about the cup sizes & prices.
Being a tight-wad I thought I'd do a comparison.
The following might be well known but came as a surprise to me.
There are 3 cup sizes small $1.00,medium $2.00 and large $3.00
https://i.imgur.com/rSC0WSu.jpg
2 x $1.00 cups fills a $2.00 cup with about half a cup over
https://i.imgur.com/McnWute.jpg
2 x $1.00 cups fills a $3.00 cup with a little left over

My takeaway from this is I'll be buying 2 small cups for $2.00 from now on.

Haha! Can you do for slurpees too please?!

I was told the cups cost more than the slurpees themselves…

  • Thank you

  • +1

I'd suspected this. Thanks for doing the comparison for us.
Sadly, SA doesn't have 711, so it's an interstate treat.
There are some benefits to living here though… 😊

    • Like refunds on plastic water bottles? Hahaha

  • +2

cheers.. but consider that disposable coffee cups aren't actually recyclable (in most situations).
so you'll be doing a damage multiplier vs environment.

don't actually care.. or think I have some moral highground.. but i try and use my own coffee mug at 7-11 or wherevs for this reason. 3 billion are used in australia annually… 3 billion.. ?? how is it possible??! https://www.responsiblecafes.org/

(p.s fyi $1 fills a standard mug perfectly.. and if you smash a mugs handle off, fits in car-cup-holder perfectly :) )

    • +1

Thank you . I agree. Ill be taking my own mug in next trip interstate.
      Great idea!

    • So now we just have 3 million mug handles in landfill instead :))
      /s

Lol, but seriously I just use my keepcup. Stock up on 10 pack sachets when they are half price. If I use 7-11, I just use it, make it a large ($2, technically a "medium" as there is one bigger) and pay for a regular ($1). Guy at the counter seems happy with this and likes that I bring my own cup :D

      • -1

        So you steal then?

        • +2

First time I went there I said can I use my own cup - he said yes, fill it up.
I said, how big a cup do I pay for - he said just fill it up and we'll call it a regular :)

Note: he didn't actually tell me what cup size, presumably he did not know. I only did a regular the first time, but found a large ($2) fills it nicely.

Not sure if he is just some environment loving green thumb, if this is standard practice or he was just in a good mood and now its habit. Maybe he just figures it's only a few cents extra water and coffee :D

        • -1

@pennypincher98: You should be paying whatever button you press on the machine to 'fill' your cup. Pressing $2 cup, and the going to the counter and saying its a 'regular' is stealing.

        • +2

@JimmyF: I think you are mistaken. He calls it a regular not me. Maybe he likes me because I'm a regular? Who knows! I'm not going to say, oh no I insist on paying double for my coffee.

He literally says at the counter - that will be $1 please.

        • -4

@pennypincher98: still stealing if you push the $2 button on the machine man. Regardless.

        • +2

@JimmyF: Oh, forgive me of my sins. I'm going to give him $20 next time for my coffee. Better?

This is OzBargain. If he says I can have my large refill for $1 then I will take it. The cup probably costs just as much to make as the coffee.

You can fly up from Melbourne if you want but until the guy says that'll be $2, I'll pay him $1.

        • -3

@pennypincher98: You can justify your stealing however you want. But Yes this is OzBargain, not OzTheif.

        • -1

i guess it depends on if this person owns the place.. or has some authorisation to offer such a leniency from the persons who do own it.. unsure if these machines are 3rd party provided.. leased on a pay-per-use basis.. may complicate things.

interesting discussion anyway.. but i can't agree that this is stealing 'regardless'.

        • +2

@Stitchy: I think 7-11 buys these machines and gets them refilled every time and all that maintenance done with the purchase.

Certainly not stereotyping but he definitely looks like a business head, a look of authority about him and air of self-confidence.
Either he is in a high authority role or is really vain and pretentious.

His business strategy has worked though - I pay $1 to fill my keepcup there instead of getting an 80c cup at Coles express :) Who knows - Coles express could offer me the same kind of deal but I'm a loyal customer now.

        • +2

          @JimmyF:

I think you misunderstand the definition of the word "Stealing" - which is to take something without consent.

Seeing as the guy collecting the money is CLEARLY saying that OP can buy a large and pay for a regular (likely because they save money as OP brings his own cup), there's obviously consent.

      • -2

        That is absolutely stealing.

        • Actually no - on further reflection upon this I have realised the man serving me is actually committing a minor act of fraud. He is selling things for less than he should. I might stop just for his sake.

        • +1

          @pennypincher98:

Omg, don't get influenced by these people. I've worked in a cafe before - the cups are a HUGE part of the price of the coffee. The shop is likely still coming out ahead selling you a large for regular price, as you're saving them the price of a disposable cup each time.

        • +1

@0blivion: I wasn't actually going to stop I was just keeping the peace :P

Yeah I've heard that the cups are a big portion of the coffee price but how much (percentage wise perhaps?) are we talking?

        • +1

          @pennypincher98:

From memory (and this was years ago, so both hard to remember and possibly out of date), it was something like a quarter to a third of the cost (not price) of a cup of coffee was the physical disposable cup and lid.

But this was in an actual cafe - and while I'd expect the cost of a disposable cup to remain the same, I'm going to guess that the cost of 7-11's coffee beans (and sugar, and milk) are all going to be lower so in this case the actual physical cup probably makes an even higher proportion of the cost of the cup of coffee.

        • @0blivion: Hmm that's very interesting indeed. Some cafe's give 30-50c off the price of a coffee for using your own cup, but they buy the cup for more or less than that?

        • +2

@pennypincher98: It was less than 50c per disposable cup on a cost basis, though not by much and could be around or over that now (but the cup of coffee, including the cup and the coffee, is about just over a dollar on a cost basis - this doesn't include things like wages, the coffee machine, etc though).

But it's not really offered to make money, it's more just marketing - both in the, you can get even more of a discount if you do X! and also in the "we're good to the environment!" sense which is generally popular with the coffee-drinking crowd.

        • +1

@0blivion: Haha the only reason I have a keepcup is because Jamaica Blue had a "we're good to the environment" moment and gave out 25 free ones per location. Thus now I can get Nescafe sachets for 35c each half price ($3.49 for a 10pk, like coles this week)

        • @pennypincher98: Wait, you get discounts on coffee because you have a keepcup? Why have I never heard of this? I drink enough coffee (honestly probably too much) that I could buy a keepcup and still come out ahead after a month or so!

Edit: I realised I totally just had a mind blank - you mentioned the discount for bringing your own cup just above and I even replied. Guess I need more coffee…..

        • +1

@0blivion: Yeah I do at certain places, $3.50 becomes $3. Or I can have instant coffee instead and save 90% instead of 15% lol.

I wouldn't buy a keepcup, but cheap knock offs will do the trick also. You can even bring your own mug to some if you want!

        • +1

@0blivion: Yeah, have seen places that offer 50cents to $1 off.

That war on waste show was trying to get places to do it.

        • @John Kimble: That can't possibly be actually making money by saving on a disposable cup for $1 discount, unlikely even on a 50c discount. But I'll have to find a place like that.

        • +1

@pennypincher98: I'll have to find a place that gives that kind of discount. And as for instant coffee - if I was awake enough in the mornings to make my own coffee, I wouldn't need coffee in the first place - that's very much a catch-22 situation…..

        • @0blivion: Lol you literally put a sachet and water in a cup. If you can't achieve that, you shouldn't trust yourself with a hot beverage haha

Whereabouts in NSW would you be getting coffee? I might know a few places… That website above is a good start though.

      • unfortunately twice now I've had the mugs thrown in the bin at my workplace.. ohs issue i suppose.. can't have a mug without a handle.. it's just asking for a lawsuit!! :( :)

  • Based on approx. strength, I'd guess:

    $1 cup = 1 shot coffee
    $2 cup = 2 shots coffee
$3 cup = 2 shots of coffee plus more milk

Assuming this is correct 2x$1 or 1x$3 cup is just more milk.

    • huh? the $3 is equal to 2 x $1 cups.

      • Sorry - should have clarified. Using the $2 cup as a base

        • +1

but $3 isn't more milk. As the OP said

          2 x $1.00 cups fills a $3.00 cup with a little left over

They had leftover from the 2 x $1 cups when filling a $3 cup.

So the best value is 2 x $1 cups!

        • +1

          @JimmyF:

My point is I don't care volume of liquid as much as I care about the number of coffee shots. It's the same if you buy from a cafe- usually at a cafe you get 3 options. Small, medium, large. Small has a single shot of coffee (30mL) and medium/large have a double shot (60mL).

If you get the largest coffee, usually you're just paying for more milk - the coffee content remains the same (60mL). If you want a hit of caffeine its typically better to get a medium + extra shot (90mL coffee) rather than paying for a size up.

Assuming 7 Eleven is the same, regardless of whether you go for 2x $1 cups, or 1x $2 cup or 1x $3 cup you're still only getting 60mL of coffee. All that's varying is the milk.

        • @NuclearWessels: If there's the same amount of coffee in the $1 and $3 cups then you get twice as much coffee content with the 2X$1 (two serves of coffee) as with the $3 (one serve of coffee)

  • its a shame they water down the milk

  • +2

My takeaway from this is I'll be buying 2 small cups for $2.00 from now on.

did you factor in the time it takes you to make the second cup? the current national minimum wage is $18.29. so that's ~$0.16 (30sec) to make the second cup.

however, taking lifehacker's average australian weekly income as an example. then it's ~$0.26 (30sec) for the second cup.
    https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2017/05/how-much-does-the-aver…

abs figures bumps that second cup up to ~$0.34.

    • I think time is more valuable than money, seeing as money is normally pre-arranged and determined :)
I also think the environment is more valuable than either, so one cup can be much more

    • the 7/11 near my work has 2 machines. so double your pleasure, double your fun.

  • Am I the first person who is wanting to correct the cup size names?? Surely not..

    • What are they? Most people have only mentioned the price of the cups, not S,M L

      • $ is how the 711 sells them, but that equals

        $1 = S
        $2 = M
        $3 = L

      • 7-11 sell them as:
        $1 = regular
        $2 = large
        $3 = super

      • $1 = Large
        $2 = Extra Large
        $3 = Jumbo

        • You're kidding me.
Is it actually different in QLD?

  • 2 (or 3, depending on the line) x espresso in a small cup, can't go wrong.

  • Merged from 7-Eleven Larger Coffee Sizes Poor Value

I don't drink coffee, and the size to cost difference is already obvious, but since this is OzBargain I suppose somebody cares.

The $3 cup fits in the $2 cup and the $2 cup almost fits in the $1 cup: https://amp.news.com.au/finance/business/retail/7eleven-3-co…

When I was a kid I assumed the unusual cases of larger sizes being poorer value was based on "convenience" or "refrigeration", since soft drinks were the obvious common example.

But of course it's not the case, with Colgate's super large toothpaste often being poorer value than the normal size. Or 3L milk having a 10 percent levy for the farmers not imposed on smaller sizes.

    • "The $3 cup fits in the $2 cup and the $2 cup almost fits in the $1"

If you add all the numbers together that's the average wage of a 7/11 employee.

    • +1

but since this is OzBargain I suppose somebody cares

Since this is OzBargain, … the 7-11 coffee drinkers already knew this, but thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention.

I think 7-11's challenge is that their $1 cup is so cheap - e.g. McDonalds apparently use the same coffee but charge much more a cup.

    • I believe 7-11 countered that the milk foam settles more when poured from cup to cup, which could account for at least some of the reason. Would like to see something a little more scientific than pouring from cup to cup.

But yes, it was pretty obvious the $2/3 are not double/triple the $1 size.

    • Good coffee at a bargain price. Why try and bag it :-( If you want to pay twice the price for much worse you are free to do so.
Auto coffee machines everywhere, not just 7-11, are calibrated to fill the cup to a certain level when they are serviced.
Some are done so they fill to the brim and others a lot lower.
To overcome this major problem you can press a button to add more hot water or hot milk to fill it to the level you desire.
I find most 7-11 machines are calibrated fairly well and the moron who did this article must have found a machine somewhere that was calibrated a bit low, but it made his petty day for him.

    • I remember hearing about this else where - in fact it was here on OzBargain back in 2017!

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/343263

  • I always buy 2 x $1 cup as you get lots more than in a $2 cup

The 7-11 coffee is much better that the Coles Express coffee IMO (but my kids prefer the Coles hot chocolate as they have different flavors)

    • Hopefully you don't have to make two stops?!

  • I actually put 2 shots in one cup then fill hot milk.

  • The cups sizes are 8oz, 12oz and 16oz.

  • I've been searching the internet for millilitres (ml) sizes of 7-Eleven coffee cups in Australia. I gave up and emailed 7-Eleven directly. This was their reply.

    Please be advised that the cup sizes for our coffees are as follows;
    Regular coffee ($1)- 285mL
    Large Coffee ($2) - 400mL
    Super Coffee ($3) - 500mL

Useful if you would like to purchase a reusable coffee cup.
