How Can I Get My Own Money Back That I Lent to a Friend?

Hi there,

One of my friend borrowed money from me, and kept tell me that will return me back soon since last month- we's been contacted each other via social media platform, so yesterday trying to call her and just realised that she changed her mobile number without telling me, sent several messages via social media as used to, no response, so what should I do to get my money back. Before she told me she was cheated by her girlfriend, then resulting in financial difficulty, she is VIC, but I am in NSW, please help me, thanks

Contact the police, they should be able to advise you on what to do.

Police station locations in this link, just enter your suburb or postcode - http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/about_us/regions_local_area_com…

    Good luck!

I mean i have generously given $1000 to a longtime old good friend because he was in a much worse off position than me and he is a really good person and I enjoy his company but $10k wow.. that is a lot.

Sucks that you were taken advantage of OP but yeah in future I suppose if you were to lend somebody money and not give it to them straight out make some sort of documentation or something or ask here or some legal forums or subreddit for some advice if you are really serious about it which it looks like you were.

All the best OP I hope things look up.

First off you should get legal advice:

    https://www.legalaid.nsw.gov.au/

This doesn't read as genuine but if it is you should read this:

    https://www.gotocourt.com.au/legal-news/recover-small-debt-i…

You will probably have to send her one of these:

    http://www.magistratescourt.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/D…

That is, if you know where she lives. If you can't locate her you are probably scewed.

    • thanks, i have spoken to people from legal service, i can take her to court and get money back, but i need to find her first as currently she's hiding…

  • Post a picture of her, if someone in Vic sees her, they can call you!

thanks for above people who offered the advise, in fact i just find out i am not only the victim, and she deliberately cheated others as well, and total amount is massive. Below is her photos

Even if you track her down AND get her to court (unlikely) and court rules in your favour, you're still unlikely to get your money back as she'll declare bankruptcy (she'll have no assets to take).

I feel for you bro, I hope you got more than simple standard friendship for that 10k.

Admittedly, after hearing your story I wish for people like her to have their face and name plastered all over the world and be made famous for what they have done, but objectively it's probably a bit mean to put their Facebook details on a public forum…

    • Did you check the library? It's her home.
