Which is better, to rent a pocket WiFi or to buy a data sim when travelling to Japan?

I have looked at both options but still wonder what people would get.

4 travelers who heavily use data travelling from the 3rd Dec to the 20th Dec

So far I have looked up:
https://www.sakuramobile.jp/mobile-router/
and

Any help would be much appreciated.

  • For four people wouldn't one pocket WiFi make more sense than 4 sims? Unless you will not always be together?

    • we will rarely split up but there will be times :/

      • Well, if you split up you can always use public WiFi in places like Starbucks as a plan B.

why would you need (besides checking OzBargain) to use data when you're on holidays?

      Train time tables (hyperdia)
      Google maps
      Apps
Skype (foreigners can't get access to mobile coverage)

Unless you have local you need data in japan.

On topic though I would personally go a sim card. (Bmobile ftw)

Having Google Maps for navigation and that or Hyperdia for JR Train timetables is a huge help if you want to see as much of the country as possible.

  • I was unsure what to do as well. But you really don't need anything in the major cities. Most places you stay at have free wifi. Starbucks are everywhere, easy unsecured log on to their wifi. Metro stations and others have free wifi, just require you to provide your email (If you're privacy conscious you could enter anything!) Maps.me app is great with GPS Navigation without needing internet connection.

  • I rented a Pocket wifi - picked it up at my hotel on arrival, returned it at the aiprot (…just as I was about to clear customs and had to run back to post it. Oops)

Worked really well and was a lot more convenient than sorting the SIM would have been for a short stay

Best Travel SIM for Japan. This topic has been asked many times on OzBargain. For example here and here.

  • Bmobile sim have used it multiple times in JPN will no issues ever

  • I ended up getting a pocket wifi from https://www.ivideo.com.tw/english/japanwifirental

Seemed the cheapest and it was unlimited with t&c of a reasonable amount. I asked what was the reasonable amount it was 10gb every 3 days.

    • have you used it? how was the quality and how much did you end up paying? was it easy to obtain and return it? thank you!

      • Just came back from my trip and it was amazing. Got 2 pocket wifis for around $90.
        went from the 4/12/2017-20/12/2017
I was told you can use around 10gb per 3 days. If you do go over they will shut you down. Never went past this limit so unsure what would happen. Used this in japan. The instructions where in japanese so it was quiet difficult getting the wifi but japanese people were so helpful. Picked it up at a lawson in the airport so was very easy besides the instructions to go pick it up.
