Here's the best advice:
On Qs 1-4, pay more attention to the answers than the questions. The question might be tough-ish, but two answers will be outrageous. (e.g. "Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? A. Captain Crunch, B. Thomas Jefferson, C. Steve Jobs")
On Qs 8-12, often two answers will look perfectly reasonable and one will seem ridiculous. The ridiculous one is usually the right one. (e.g. "Which of these does The Science Guy hold a patent for? A. Mechanical Pencil, B. Battery, C. Ballet Shoe") Similarly, if the answer is a person and you and your friends recognize two of them but not the other, it's usually the one you haven't heard of. That's how they trim a million players down to a few hundred.
The game is mostly won or lost between Qs 5 and 7. That's when they tend to put obscure ranking questions like "Which of these 3 airlines was founded first?" Not sure how Ken Jennings would do with that one.
The important thing to remember is that HQ Trivia is not a trivia game. If half of them weren't trick questions, there'd be thousands of winners every time. It was a little easier last year, but with 12 questions to eliminate a million players, you can expect lots of tricks.
