One of the more high profile Mac personal finance applications. I don't use it, though I have tried it. It isn't often offered on sale.

Things to look for in this apps are cross platform (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android) if you use another and want all your data synced across. Import export of data. The longevity of the company and how committed they are to Mac.

I use Moneywell, but only because it came in a bundle years ago and I'm used to it by now.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2017

  • Looks like a good deal. Anyone using this software? This review: https://investorjunkie.com/26237/banktivity-review/ indicates that there are some additional features with ongoing costs such as linking up with bank accounts (extra US$39.99/year)…

Yes, that's a bit stingy, but that's for automatic downloading (and you'd want to check it can do your bank). You can also manually download and import bank data.

Another thing to check is the price of any iOS apps US$20

    • I've been trialling it over the last week after using moneydance for years. Moneydance feels much snappier with large data sets, but i just fell behind entering receipts and never got back on top of it. Even with manual imports from bank downloads you have to initiate yourself, I could never get on top of entries considering how you had to do it for each account from each bank. The overhead adds up. And once you have gaps, you start to question the usefulness of the data you've got.

I started trialling Banktivity because of the automatic downloads feature. Within a week I've managed to get everything across and clean up duplicates through a complete moneydance export combined with whatever bank downloads I could get my hands on as far back as they go (automatic downloads only seems to download your more recent transactions). The data that I have is useful again!

  • How does this differ/compare to something like Pocketbook (which is Aussie specific)?

    • Don't know that app, but differences that may happen are any tax issues and bank connectivity.

Pocketbook data is all stored online. If their service went down you won't be able to access it.

Banktivity data sits locally on your device and then synchronises with a cloud copy.

Also, pocketbook won't let you do anything complex such as splitting transactions (eg. when you go to coles and buy groceries and a phone recharge, you can't categorise part of the transaction as groceries and part of the transaction as mobile phone).

Another alternative I was playing with before I was put onto banktivity is Moneybrilliant, which also appears to be an Australian Service. Their service is comparable to what pocketbook offers. I found that Moneybrilliant supports more banks/institutions than pocketbook.

  • Shame this is only for mac. Anybody have any good recommendations for Windows? with cross platform to Android?

    • +1

Moneydance is a good cross-platform alternative, but doesn't support auto-downloads for bank data (at least for Australian banks). It syncs over dropbox.

      • Thanks mate I will check it out =)

        • The syncing via Dropbox is a good feature. Moneywell does that and I have it installed on desktop and laptop - can work on the same file and it all syncs well.

  • Deal appears to be active now.
