Looking to Buy a Internal HDD (4TB-10TB)

I have been looking for an internal HDD for me to store my movies and TV shows on for Plex. (streaming movies to my chromecast/roku/tv ect..)

I am un-decided on where I should be looking as black Friday sales don't seem to be too great for Aussies.

On a side note, is there any real downsides to HDD specs other than size and speed?
As in, What would the difference be between a WD Black HDD and a WD Gold HDD?

Cheers

    hey 0burntrice0

Difference between WD Black and WD Gold is 128mb cache on the black vs 256mb cache on the gold.

Plus I think WD Black has 5 year warranty and WD Gold has 10 year warranty.

I personally go for WD Black's. You can score a 6TB WD Black for around $430 online a WD Gold 12TB will cost $1K.

Don't buy Seagate's (rubbish) or Toshiba's (better than Seagate but still bad). Hitachie is good as they are owned by WD.

    • Hate to be a pain but what would a 256mb cache be better at than a 128mb? Would it be noticeable at all?

Cheers for the rest of the info though, I think I will have to have a look around some more.

      • For movies, WD red is enough?

        • In that case, Ive heard red is aimed at NAS,
I would be streaming movies off the HDD using the Plex server.

        • @0burntrice0:
isn't it depend, on type of steaming you do? to whole neighborhood or within your house hold?:)
I got wd red, no issues other than slow copying large number of files, then again too hard to compare since I don't have either black or gold. I got red because its cheap and always on as a server, but OS on a SSD.

This is what dr google told me https://www.techporn.ph/understanding-the-differences-betwee… :)

You could grab a Toshiba X300 Performance HDD (8TB) for around $365.35 delivered on Newegg.

FWIW, i bought a 5TB one for AUD $158 from Amazon. today's price will be USD $146.1 / $191.65 which is not as cheap.

  • 256mb cache vs 128mb cache. If your constantly streaming videos or music or using the HD as a server then go for the higher cache.

But honestly the WD Blacks are damm fast. I get 120 to 240 mbs transfer speeds on usb 3.0. Price ratio the blacks win.

    • In comparison to WD red, would red be okay?
One user above said for movies red is enough.

  • Wow nice find scrimshaw.

I bought 2 x Seagate Expansion 8TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEB8000100) at $174.99 USD each.

    Came to $379.40 USD.

    Purchased July 23, 2017.

    My actual Amazon invoice was:

    Item(s) Subtotal: AUD 459.22
    Shipping & Handling: AUD 28.14
    Gift-wrap: AUD 10.47
    ——-
    Total before tax: AUD 497.83
    Sales Tax: AUD 0.00
    ——-
Total for This Shipment: AUD 497.83

No idea on the quality of these drives compared to others but for the price it seemed like a steal. Gave one to my housemate to use for his Xbox One S and the other for his laptop.

  • I'm looking similar drive for the same purpose for my nas. I think I will buy WD red 8TB (WD80EFZX).
