AmEx Shop Small - AmEx Refuses Statement Credit

This fellow Ozbargainer is like, :) now

Jumping straight to the TL;DR version:

  • Enrolled in Amex Shop Small
  • Made a >$20 purchase at Bekya Middle Eastern Kitchen (Gateway, Circular Quay) - Shop Small Campaign pop-up card prominently displayed BUT not listed in Amex's Shop Small map (which i understand is hopelessly incomplete)
  • Amex refused to pay statement credit as it was "not on the map"

Here's the kicker-

  • Spent at Jimmy's Kitchen (same complex but upstairs) - no Shop Small pop-up card that i can recall
  • RECEIVED statement credit - customer representative refused to comment on this

Personally, I would just build a bridge and get over it…

Time and effort spent not worth the $10. Just use the offer somewhere else.

    • was going to say "it's not about the amount but the principle" but you're right, it's $10. 10 frozen cokes, which i can live without.

      … i think.

Its not about principle. It AMEX has not have that shop in their map, they won't pay you. Period.
Having said that, i got $10 back when i bought new rug few days back and that shop did not have any pop up neither i have any knowledge of whether shop is there on map or not.

well… the merchant had the pop-up sign on the counter so i think it's a reasonable assumption that they would be included?

          anyway, totally over it. :)

Could it be that the merchant has a fake pop-up or a pop-up from a previous year. They never signed up, but thought they could attract some customers by faking it.

I would have thought the source of truth would be the Amex site. If its not on the site, its not a small shop irrespective of whether the shop had a pop-up card or not.

@blablabla23: Check last year's map - they could be too lazy to pull off sticker.

@MrHyde: They probably have a "Bankcard Welcomed Here" sign as well.

    Move on…

  • went to sushi place last week on Amex map that opened only two months ago and they refused amex altogether. how bad is that?

    • +2

Usually you could still ask Amex to reimburse it but simply letting them know the shop refused Amex.

  • Perhaps there may be a delay? I spent >$20 at two shop small places on the same day. After the first, I received an email within 5 mins of the transaction, but didn't receive an email confirmation of statement credit for the second spend. I checked my statement about 5 days later and statement credit was confirmed for the second shop small purchase as well

    • nahh mate it has been nearly 2 weeks. I find that the statement credits are usually awarded when the transaction is posted, ie. when they are no longer pending.

      • AHhh fair enough, for me I was pleasantly surprised after conceding defeat

Amex can only be responsible for what's on their website.

  • Amex map is terrible, its lotto if u get ur credit

    • I always wonder, how do you call bikies????

  • Amex customers service is getting worse, I can tell although they pretent to be polite but they don’t apply the credit manually or offer any points to compensate for the inconvenience, just given the excuses sorry can’t can’t can’t, no no unfortunately, I wish I could but…blah blah. Last year, I just called them and they apply the credits instantly.

  • A bit unrelated, but some of my previous Amex spends have not been credited- does someone have the Amex phone number that I should call? My Amex is issued by CBA.

  • I went to my local Nando’s place, was told they don’t use Amex!

Pretty disappointing when it happened ?
Does Amex cover all Nando’s restaurants or it’s Upto the independent owner ?

Edit: this is in relation to the spend $20, get $10 back.

I had the same issue last year when I went to one of the Japanese restaurant shown on the map. They don't accept Amex but name appeared in Amex map. Vey disgusting.

  • i checked map two of the businesses were there just like last year. i make purchases there but never got credits so i called up they said they are franchises which are excluded. i check map again and they are no longer on the map. she couldn't do nothing for me and suggested i email amex. still haven't heard anything. best to make a trial purchase first before buying a large amount of goods with multiple amex cards. some stores are listed on site i asked them do they accept amex staff say no. i ask them to double check as they are listed on the small shop site and then staff member changes his tune and says yes but a 25 cent surcharge. its a bit disappointing this year. made a good profit last year. best to double check map and ask business if they in fact accept amex before making a purchase. does anyone know a direct email or phone number for amex regarding missing amex credits for this small shop promo?
