Newbie Wants to Get AmEx Cards?

Hey, guys,
I want to get 2 Amex cards so I can reap the benefits like my fellow ozbargainers.
But I don't know where to start or even how to tackle the problem.
I was hoping to get some advice on which cards and where to get them.
I not a big fan of paying 1200 pa for the cards tho. Thanks.

That’s what I did – I got first 2 of their main free cards listed here – Essential, Qantas Discovery and Velocity Escape.

Essential is a good one to have, I reckon, and collect Amex points. My post here includes a comparison of the cash-equivalent reward rates of these cards, more info about Essential and other users' comments.

As for the second card, choose base on whether Qantas or Velocity points is more useful to you.

    Hope this helps.

I'm a big advocate of the platinum edge - you can earn three points per dollar at supermarkets, and two per dollar at petrol stations. there is also a $200 travel credit each year which offsets the $195 annual fee, but if you dont want to pay a fee at all then the essential is a good alternative.

Referrals for the platinum edge give you 15,000 bonus points currently

Wow thanks guys, this is very helpful, I have read some comments on ozbargain where people are complaining they didn't go big and get the first time sign up rewards like the 80k points or 65k points but those cards have a 1200$ pa fee is it worth getting those rewards??

    • The one with the $1200 p.a. fee is the Platinum Charge card. In terms of points earn, it doesn't do as well as the Platinum Edge or Explorer (assuming everyday spend such as groceries, petrol etc). Where it does shine is travel benefits (such as lounge access etc).
A few members here on OzB have that card, and I'm sure they utilise all the benefits to the max.
Personally I don't jetset anywhere so that card won't suit me. I have the Platinum Edge and Explorer.
Happy to answer any more questions :)
