  • Just out of curiosity.. what will you use a 10TB drive for ?

    • +20

      Backup for ten 1TB drives.

Bulk "Linux Isos", definitely nothing piracy related.

    • I have an 8tb sandisk archival currently that's about half full. I use it to back up client raw files from photoshoots. Was thinking or grabbing another 8 but this looks tempting as well, although I don't use the drive a lot.

I'll just say what i'd use it for.
x265 10bit 1080p encodes of EVERY TV show and Movie i like for my plex media server.

I have 7.5TB worth of movies and TV shows with less than half being in the quality i want, i still have lots of old shitty 720p x264 encodes and bad 1080p encodes.

      Porn.

    • I'm going to download the internet!

      • +2

You would need at least 6 of these drives to download the internet.

My wedding photos and video are 1TB and I'm a photo enthusiast. I have another TB or so of astronomy catalogs that can be plugged into sky mapping software. I could probably fill it with Opencourseware alone. It never fails to amaze me that people don't know what to do with storage.

Infinite copies of jv's profile picture on your hard drive.

Also don't have to uninstall any game you install.. ever

    40TB in my Synology = $1800

Should I? I could write it off as a business expense.

    Gonna sleep on it.

Couldn't wait. Just called them and left a message.

Some nice men came over and took my laptop and synology. Hopefully they will install the hard drives for me.

        Great service!

The big question is, will this reduce the shipping weight and cost.

      • good question…

      • Light weight is indeed One of its selling point. Not joking.

  • I'm getting this item can't be shipped to your location…do we need a prime account?
    Thanks

    • same for me

It changes from time to time. Keep an eye on it.

I was ordered few of them in multiple orders across time

Remember to choose ‘sold by Amazon’.

        Good luck.

You know only time will tell but I’ve been thinking about this

It’ll be a slap in the face of Amazon Australia (once they open) if the same item can be had from Amazon US posted for cheaper ….
    Hi!Ho!Ho

Even if they do the same price with exchange rates nice and all - we will still get a GST applied… I don't expect Amazon to absorb that. what will be interesting is if they start applying our taxes to orders from the the US store to balance it out and keep orders local.

      • Yup, happy to pay only one GST.
If Amazon US apply Aus GST, they shouldn't apply the American GST (or whatever they call it).
So it should even it out, or close to it anyway….

        • Pretty sure we currently do not pay any sales tax on Amazon.com orders - never see it on my invoice. Same thing with the UK VAT (VAT gets removed for our orders during chekcout, but in the US sales tax is only applied appropriately during checkout.. so we don't get it. The assumption being items should not be double Taxed - but under 1K and we get away with it tax free.

Beware that WD generally don't allow out of region warranty so any faulty drives would need to go back to the US.

  • Other option is to send the drive to a forwarder.
I signed up to this from a deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/341443
So if I use my amex I should get 30% off if I understood the deal correctly.
Amazon shipping on the $416 drive is just over $30USD.

A helium hard drive?? Must be extremely light - does it float?

    • on voice command

8TB for US$150 seems a miles better deal to me.

Search for Seagate backup plus 8TB.

    • +5

Before you ask, you shouldn't compare an 8TB low-end Seagate shingled drive, to a top of the line enterprise drive.

  • There is also a 12TB model:

  • Would a normal 3.5” enclosure hold this 10tb hdd or do I need to get one of those nas storage cage?
