It depends on the food. Most premium foods from a specialty pet store are better quality than the supermarket pet food. The main reason the supermarket food is so much cheaper is because they are often filled with cheap cereals, grains, corns, and by-products that offer little nutritional value to the pet. Because of this, you'll often find it goes straight through their digestive system and comes out the other end. They also tend to be hungry all the time because their bodies aren't getting the right amount of nutrients, so you'll end up spending more money on food in the long run because a bag of Good-Os or Whiskas won't last as long as something premium that will fill them up better.
It's definitely worth giving some of the more expensive food a try, just to see if you notice a difference in their hunger levels or their digestion/poo.
