A great little studio mic. Not quite as popular as the Blue Yeti, not as expensive and simpler controls. Rates well. Reviews seem good. I believe it handles a noisy room slightly better than the yeti too, however I have not personally tested this. A great mic at great price. Get podcasting!

  • How does this compare with Blue Snowball ICE from jbhifi for $76?

    • +2

By comparison, Samson sounds more crisp and clear.
But if you're used to blue snowball-ish sound signature, you know what to do.
Everything comes down to personal preference
I had a Samson meteor mic a few years ago, it's a great little mic.

      • I second Trio21. I have not owned it but I looked and LISTENED to a heap of youtube reviews and compairons and felt it has a great mic and better sound than the snowball.

  • How are these for song recording? amateur style. i hear that normal speaking microphones dont handle the melody and volume for singing very well

    • It’ll work if you have strong mixing skills haha
I see lots of people using blue yeti for music covers on YouTube
I guess you can do it casually
But if you’re serious about it, eventually you’ll get an audio interface + preamp + XLR mic, it costs a lot more but it’s a different world

I was looking for speech only. However here is girl doing a cover on one with no pop filter and can't see any sound treatment of the room. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koaSh66wzsA Looking at this I think you should be okay for amateur stuff.

  • Here is a review by a sound booth specialist and he prefers this to the Yeti. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1006yW1jkKk

  • These aren't very good. A lot of people recommend them, I guess because of the price?

I do a podcast with my brother, he bought one of these when we started and the results just weren't up to snuff. We got rid of it after a couple of weeks and he bought something better.

Try and spend a bit more for something better, because you won't be happy with these in my opinion.

    • What did you end up getting then?

      • We ended up spending significantly more and getting an audio interface and an audio technica mic. Was well worth the money.

        • Ah yes I expect you would have a better result by spending so many times more. You probably spent $400+ depending on models. I have a similar setup with an AT2050 and a behringer mixer with the USB interface. It's lovely, but a lot more $$. This mic is a Ford or a Holden, while we have a BMW, yet I'm sure we all wish we had a Ferrari!

        • @ShipShapeRC:

Yeah, not surprising that spending more resulted in better quality.

I guess the point I wanted to make was that regardless, these microphone are cheap, they sound cheap, and unless you're completely not fussed with audio quality you won't be happy with it.

        • @thisispants: Fair call, however I think sound quality wise they give good sound for the price point, and they are at the best price for a year, so it's still a bargain. Anything that plugs in usb with the mic under $100 is going to have to compromise somewhere.

Heck I used a loudspeaker wired up to the microphone socket (mechanically they are almost the same) and recorded the voice over on my VHS high school assignment. Talk about muddy cheap sound! However on the up side, it did not pick up room noise ;-)
